Fireworks for the Fourth of July
Help youngsters to develop color recognition and cultural awareness with this sensory experience from Amy Materials: Black construction paper, colored chalk and small containers of water. Description: Children will make colorful fireworks using the chalk. Encouragethe children to dip the chalk into the water before drawing. The water helps the chalk adhere to the paper better. There is no powdery mess and the colors are more vibrant. This is an open-ended activity so they all look very different and colorful! Comments: Try taping the paper to the table for the little ones so it doesn't keep slipping away. Also, only put a little water into each container. Not much is needed and this helps prevent lots of clean up due to spills.

Posted by Jamye I just remembered a song I learned a couple of years ago. You can sing the last names of all the presidents ..in order...with the tune of "one little,Two Little,Three Little Indian" (or something to that effect!). Verse One
Washington, Adams, Jefferson, Madison, Monroe, Adams, Jackson, VanBuren, Harrison, Tyler, Polk and Taylor, Fillmore, Pierce and Buchanan. Verse Two:
Lincoln, Johnson, Grant and Hayes, Garfield, Arther, Cleveland, Harrison,
Cleveland, Mckinley, Roosevelt, Taft, Wilson, Harding and Coolidge. Verse Three: Hoover, Roosevelt, Truman, Eisenhower, Kennedy, Johnson, Nixon, Ford, Carter, Reagan, Bush and Clinton, Now it's George W. Bush! (ok..I had to update the ending a little!)You might have to play with the ending a bit to get it to fit the song....but it is worth a try! Have fun!

PRESIDENTIAL SILHOUETTES What you will need:
  • Pencil
  • White paper or poster board
  • Black paper
  • Scissors (use with adult supervision)
  • Flashlight
  • Glue
Everyone recognizes the silhouettes of Washington and Lincoln. Talk about their place in history and the contributions they made as Presidents of the United States. Look at their silhouettes and create your own. Go into a dark room, and stand sideways against a wall. Tape a piece of white paper or poster board on the wall. The board should start about mid-chest and go above the person's head. Have someone stand about six feet back from the wall, and shine a flashlight on the person's head. Trace the person's shadow onto the poster board with a pencil. Cut the tracing. Use the cut-out as a pattern, trace the silhouette shape onto a dark piece of paper. Cut out.
