From Slaves to Heroes The Alexandria Experience Of Water and Bread ... Presidential Material T his chapter explores the past in varied forms, from homes of famous Americans to discursions on how ordinary Americans lived and played (especially played) to the devastating effects of human prejudice. Our criteria for inclusion have been fairly loose, including hands-on archaeology, some fussy historic homes and museums bursting with historic artifacts. Some places here are not for all kids. The heavily visited U.S. Holocaust Memorial Museum, for example, demands careful parental judgment on whether children are ready to cope with that enormous tragedy. Similarly, Baltimore's Great Blacks in Wax Museum has one exhibit on the tortured occupants of a slave ship and another on lynchings, which parents may find too disturbing for some children. In less difficult cases, some kids simply may be bored by static displays of rusty tools or musty furniture or old-fashioned clothing. Many sites feature docents dressed in what is invariably referred to as "period garb," acting as if the cotton gin was never invented and penicillin never discovered. It can be more than a little precious when some lady in a mobcap asks you what a digital watch is, but many children connect with what is essentially play-acting.

ABSTRACT The Abraham Lincoln Historical Digitization Project produces Lincoln/Net (http://lincoln.lib.niu.edu), a free-use World Wide Web site that presents primary source materials from Lincoln's Illinois years together with interpretive materials discussing his life and context. OVERVIEW In 1860, Lincoln's Republican Party handlers presented him to the American people as a "representative man" who had shared experiences like westward migration, manual labor, and limited schooling with a majority of American voters. Just as Lincoln's life resonated with voters over a century ago, his experiences can shed new light upon this important period in American history as well. Lincoln/Net uses Lincoln's remarkable biography as a lens through which to examine and interpret social, cultural, and political life in his Illinois surroundings during the decades before the Civil War.

We the People Forum on American History, Civics, and Service
The USA Freedom Corps, as part of its mission to promote a culture of service, citizenship and responsibility in America's communities, has worked with federal agencies to find ways government can support the teaching of American history and our democratic traditions. Today's "We the People" forum is part of that effort. On September 17, 2002, the 215th anniversary of the signing of the U.S. Constitution, President George W. Bush announced new government efforts to improve the teaching of American history and civics and make national treasures more accessible to teachers and students - including a "We the People" Forum on American History, Civics, and Service. At the forum, members of his Administration announced the National Endowment for the Humanities will ask Congress to provide $100 million over the next three years to support this effort, and the Department of Education is accepting applications for nearly $100 million in competitive grants this year to raise student achievement by improving teachers' knowledge of American history.

Why we Have to get the Troops Out of Iraq
The hundreds of thousands of protesters who came out throughout the world on Saturday
were demanding a US and British withdrawal from Iraq.
The protesters are right that we have to get US ground troops out of Iraq.
The issue is not the rights and wrongs of the war. There were no weapons of mass destruction in Iraq. There was no nuclear program, and the mushroom clouds with which Bush, Cheney, Rumsfeld and Rice menaced us were figments of their fevered imaginations, no more substantial than the hateful internal voices that afflict schizophrenics.
But that is not a reason to get the ground troops out now.
The issue is not the lack of operational cooperation between the secular, socialist, Arab nationalist Baath Party of Iraq and the religious fanatics of al-Qaeda. There was no such operational involvement. Khalid Sheikh Mohammad and Abu Zubaydah were captured before the Iraq War, and told their American interrogators that al-Qaeda had refused to cooperate with Saddam Hussein.

As I mentioned yesterday afternoon, we ended up getting about eight hundred ticket requests to the Serenity screening Wednesday night. But we only had around two hundred seats. We've now sent out notifications to everyone we were able to provide Advertisement seats for. So if you haven't heard back, we were not able to give you a ticket. Separately, there was similarly high demand for the tickets to screenings in other parts of the country. And the studio publicity folks handling those screenings were similarly overwhelmed with not enough seats for all the requests. Unfortunately, in their case, this apparently led to their sending out emails about screenings in the wrong cities and emails about different ticket offers and a bunch of other confusion.
