Rachel Ulbrich, 4, throws a ball to Skyler Drake, 4, while Cole Huston, 5, looks on. The pre-school children are learning basic sports skills through a program at Indian Foothills Park in Marshall.
In the years to come, Cole Huston may suffer through grueling sports practices. But for now, the 5-year-old is content to learn how to swing a padded bat and kick a soft soccer ball with his dad in a sports program for preschoolers. "I think it's really important to teach children to enjoy something before we start requiring them to excel," said Recreation Director Bobbie Stone, who is teaching the 3- to 5-year-olds the basic skills for soccer, baseball and other sports. "I think at this age, the encouragement is to have fun and to do their best." Five children showed up for the preschool sports readiness program in Indian Foothills Park Wednesday evening. The original start date of the program had been June 11, but had been postponed due to rain.
