The Learn Not to Burn® (LNTB) curriculum is a fire safety curriculum designed by teachers for teachers and is intended for use by individual classroom teachers. The curriculum is written for Grades K - 3 and teaches 22 key fire safety behaviours. The LNTB curriculum is an internationally accepted program that was developed by the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA). The Canadian Tire Child Protection Association has funded the distribution and translation of the materials to all public schools in Canada. The following LNTB educational materials are available in French and English:
  • Level 1 - Learn Not to Burn® curriculum binder LNTB Resource Books LNTB Pre-School Program
The Manitoba Department of Education endorsed the LNTB curriculum in 1991 as a component of the health and guidance curriculum. The OFC is responsible for implementing the curriculum, distributing the program materials and for providing in-service training for the teachers in the Manitoba school divisions. LNTB Resource Books LNTB Resource Books are a grade-based alternative to the LNTB curriculum. The four resource books teach children in Kindergarten through Grade three, 14 basic fire safety behaviours. Each lesson includes background fire safety information for teachers, discussion points and reproducible activity sheets that can be integrated into classroom subjects such as language arts, math, art, health/safety, social studies and science. Also included are evaluation forms to test students' fire safety knowledge both before and after the program has been taught.

ESCAPE PLANNING
Having an escape plan for your home, school, workplace, is extremely important before, and during a fire. The National Fire Protection Association and the National Association of Fire Chiefs consider escape planning to be of such importance, it has been the Fire Prevention theme four times in ten years. This fire safety presentation stresses the importance of establishing a fire escape plan, teaching it to children, and practicing the plan. This program requires a television and video player and lasts approximately one hour including lecture and video presentation.

I was recently acquainted with the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation International website and was impressed with the seemingly-endless offerings of information about juvenile diabetes, support, research, living with diabetes, and ways to get involved. I have become more familiar with diabetes through a neighbor as well as my own relatives living with it. The organization is planning Walk to Cure Diabetes at family-friendly sites across the country. Last year's Walk raised $81 million for diabetes research. This year's goal is $86 million. I've donated to this great cause, and some child care providers have also joined in to make it an "extended family" outing to help raise money for a cure. One in-home provider has engaged current and past children to voluntarily participate in the walk, and combine it with a fun and safe family outing. She told me that last year, her home care was able to contribute $1,000 to the cause. The funds are donated in honor of one of her most beloved youngsters, who was diagnosed with juvenile diabetes two years ago.

Whether a child is still a bicycle passenger traveling with a parent or adult on an approved child safety seat or just beginning to try riding under adult supervision, it's never too soon to start teaching her or him the basics of bicycling safety.
Although preschool cyclists do not have the cognitive skills necessary to deal with complex cycling situations, it is vital that this age group begin learning basic safety rules alongside fundamental motor skills. Getting a head start on safety now will put kids on the track to smart lifelong cycling.
