TEACHING PRESCHOOLERS TO BE FIRE SAFE
Children at Risk
Tragically, children age five and under are twice as likely to die in fires as are older children and adults. Most fire fatalities involving preschool children fall into four categories-fires the children start themselves, fires caused by heating equipment, fires resulting from careless use of smoking materials, and arson fires. Preschool and kindergarten teachers and parents can make a difference by teaching fire safety in a way that young children can understand. It's a proven fact that providing these lessons early can save lives. To be successful, a preschool fire-safety program must involve both the children and their parents. Through the activities described in this brochure, young children can encourage the adults in their households to be aware of home fire hazards and to be better prepared for a fire. Match andLighter Safety Young children should learn that matches and lighters are tools, not toys-that they can get hot and hurt children and that they are for grown-ups only. The message should be clear: Children should not touch matches or lighters. If they find matches or lighters, they should tell a grown-up. Each year, many fires are started accidentally by children playing with matches or lighters. Get the message to parents. Buy child-resistant lighters and store matches and lighters up high, preferably in a locked cabinet. And tell them to remind guests who smoke to keep their matches and lighters with them while visiting.

The New York State's Office of Fire Prevention and Control, the New York State Office of Children and Family Services and Bic Corp., Milford, Conn., sponsored a 2H-hour interactive video seminar on how to teach preschoolers life-saving fire safety skills. The seminar was conducted by Dr. Robert Cole, a national authority on fire safety education and associate professor at the University of Rochester, and broadcast via satellite to 70 sites, where hundreds of licensed daycare providers and fire service educators statewide were taught the "play safe! be safe!" program. Developed by educators with a grant from Bic Corp., the program has been used in thousands of classrooms throughout the United States and Canada since its launch in 1994. The lesson package includes a 20-minute video, a teacher's manual, and a variety of supporting activities including a card game, vinyl activity boards and illustrated story cards. The fire safety seminar was interactive. Participants at all sites were able to ask questions by fax or phone, and Cole answered them on the air. Early childhood development experts were at each of the sites to provide additional information. All participants heard both the questions and the answers, as telephone conversations were broadcast via satellite.

Have the children glue the precut shapes on to a piece of construction paper to resemble a fire truck. They may add yarn or string for the fire hose and use straws to make a ladder. Fire Painting added 9-28-98 Original Author unknown Need: Marker, paint, paper, plastic wrap Directions: Using colors associated with fire (red, orange) squirt or draw thick lines on the paper and add a few drops of black paint here and there. Press clear plastic wrap onto the paper and squeegee the paint around. Pull plastic off of the paper using a strong vertical pulling action. (This will cause the paint to look like fire.) When paint is dry have the children glue a black cutout of a house (windows cut out) and/or a black cutout of a fire truck.
