Preschools
Within large cities in Indonesia you will find a wide variety of preschool options for your young children. From informal play groups with friends, to neighborhood kindergartens ( taman kanak-kanak or TK), to international standard preschools - your needs will be met. Some preschools organize Moms and Tots programs for 1-2 year olds who are preparing to enter a preschool program. There are also many extracurricular activities, including physical play, music, art and other social opportunities for young children which are organized by community organizations such as JICC or through commercial entities. What's most important is to find the preschool experience that you feel is most appropriate for your child. If you are looking for a more Asian academic setting to prepare for elementary school or an open experience and creative play orientation, there is a school that will match your requirements.
Indonesian TK
Indonesian preschools and kindergartens (TK) are licensed by the Department of Education and Culture. They must follow a standard curriculum, set by the Department, which prepares children for entry into the Indonesian school system. These schools are attended primarily by Indonesian children and instruction is conducted in the Indonesian language. As the Indonesian school system emphasizes academic skills and pushes children to be able to write before they enter the first grade, TK instruction puts a great emphasis on the forming of letters and copying of words.

Skates, tricycles, toy trucks and cars, wagons and balls are among children's favorite playthings. But in one year, according to U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission estimates, there were 150,000 toy-related injuries serious enough to require hospital emergency room treatment. Falls are the most frequent kind of accident, but many serious injuries result from children swallowing small parts or placing tiny toys in noses or ears, from exploding gas-powered toys, from flammable products, and from sharp edges.

Preschool Safety Outdoor Safety for Young Children
Outdoor Safety for Young Children
Whether camping by a lake or playing at the park, keeping toddlers and preschoolers safe is a matter of vigilance and common sense.
Children love to spend time outdoors, and so they should. Outdoor play provides kids with a chance to get exercise and fresh air. But with toddlers and preschoolers accidents can happen, and it’s important to ensure that our children are well protected and supervised.
From splashing in a playground wading pool to diving off a dock, one of the greatest outdoor activities for youngsters is water play. But when it comes to young children, water can easily lead to tragedy. Therefore it’s imperative that you "never let them out of your sight for a minute as they will disappear in a matter of seconds.” says Marine Safety Officer, Ken Burton who adds that “if you have a backyard pool the most important thing a parent or adult can do is make sure there are never unsupervised children around the water. They’ll throw toys in, then fall in and this often leads to tragedy.”
Burton says one of best ways of keeping kids water-safe is by having them learn to swim under the guidance of a qualified instructor through a recognized swim program. “Whether it’s a YMCA or Red Cross, or lessons at your community, get them out there in the water so that they feel comfortable and develop a good deal of respect for the water under controlled conditions.”

Stranger Danger - Street Proofing Kids
Telling your children to "never talk to strangers" is only one step in keeping our children safe from sexual predators and child abductors.
As children, how many times were we told to "never talk to strangers"? And how many times have we given our own children the same message? We've all heard the horror stories and because of them we're anxious to street proof our children. But Martha McArthur of the safety program, Block Parents, believes that a pat "never talk to strangers" isn't realistic. Instead, McArthur says "it's important to make your children aware how to interact with strangers. 'Never talk to strangers' just isn't practical because we do find children who get lost and are then afraid to ask for help from a stranger."
McArthur says we should teach our children "that there is a circle of safety, as in a safe distance when talking to strangers. For example if a stranger asks them for directions the child should take a step back, answer them and walk away. If they are afraid, they can turn in the opposite direction and walk quickly away."
As well, it's important to explain to our children that strangers look like normal people, not monsters. And the word stranger should be a little more defined in that a stranger is someone you don't know very well or know at all. In other words, a stranger could be someone you've never met, or an acquaintance of the family who knows you by name.

Nova Scotia Child Safety and Injury Prevention Program
The Nova Scotia Child Safety and Injury Prevention Program was established in September 1997 at the IWK Grace Health Centre in Halifax, Nova Scotia. The work and vision of the program is guided by an advisory council of community representatives from the professional, volunteer, and corporate sectors. The program was made possible through the generous support of the founding sponsor, Nova Scotia Power Inc. Injury is one of the leading cause of morbidity and mortality in children and youth under 20 years. The vision of the Nova Scotia Child Safety and Injury Prevention Program is to ensure that Nova Scotia is a safe community where children can grow to their full potential. The program's focus for the coming year lies in three strategic areas: advocacy, research, and education . In this capacity, the program endeavors to support other agencies and professionals, individually or in groups, to promote injury prevention and safety for all children in Nova Scotia.

32. Caring For Kids: Playground Safety
Quality information on children s health and wellbeing, such as vaccination For preschool equipment, the fill should be at least 15 cm (6 inches) deep.
http://www.caringforkids.cps.ca/keepingkidssafe/playgroundsafety.htm
Playground Safety Kids love playgrounds. But the playground is also a place where children can get hurt. Children are most often injured when they fall from the equipment. You can help make sure the playground is a safe place for your child. Check your child
  • Clothing can get trapped in equipment and strangle a child. Remove drawstrings and other cords from clothing. In the winter, use a neck warmer rather than a scarf. Use mitten clips instead of cords. Children should not wear bicycle helmets while they are on playground equipment because a child’s head may get stuck in narrow openings. Be sure that children younger than five years of age are supervised by an adult.
Check your playground
  • Choose playgrounds that ‘fit’ your child. Children five years of age and younger should use only playgrounds that are designed for preschool children because the equipment is smaller. Look for proper surfaces. Grass, dirt, asphalt or concrete are not safe surfaces for playground equipment. Good materials for playground surfaces include sand, pea gravel (smooth, round, pea-sized stones), wood chips and synthetic (man-made) materials that are soft. These materials will help absorb a child’s fall.

Safety for parents and kids
The web is a great place for kids to hang out and learn about topics that are of interest to them. However, there are areas on the Internet that are not appropriate for children. The guidelines we have drawn up are a starting point for parents of children who surf. The most important thing is to be aware of what your children are doing online. This may mean surfing with your children, or talking to them about the sites that they like, or that they have recently discovered on the web. Since Treehouse is targeted to preschool aged children, we encourage parents to enjoy the experience of the Treehouse website with their children and make surfing a family activity.

Learn not to Burn

When it comes to fire safety, older adults need our help more than any other group. Statistics show us that adults over the age of 65 are at the greatest risk of dying in a fire. Although most older adults continue to live independent, productive lives, the natural aging process can make them particularly vulnerable to fire. Common fire risks for older adults include careless smoking, careless cooking and improper placement of space heaters. "Older and Wiser" is designed to assist the fire service, community groups, home support workers, families, friends and the media in educating older adults about fire safety. Learn Not to Burn Program® The Learn not to Burn Program takes into account what children need to know about fire and burn prevention and it teaches them in a positive, non-threatening way For more than 20 years
