Pre-School Teacher Education
Language Enrichment Activities Program Young children living in poverty, such as those served by Head Start Centers, are often unable to identify primary colors, recognize most or all letters of the alphabet, count to 20, pretend to read or tell a story when presented with a book, or write their names. These skills and this knowledge are precursors to developing reading and writing skills, critical elements of success in school for all children, whether from families of poverty or wealth. More to the point, the ability to read and write has become increasingly important to the long-term academic, personal, and professional success of individuals of all ages and walks of life.

Ms Kelly says that the attainment gap between children from rich and poor families is not closing. In a speech on education and social mobility, she called for greater efforts to stop children from low-income families failing in school. "The talents of bright, but poor, children are too often being wasted."
Ms Kelly's speech to the Institute for Public Policy Research highlighted the link between family income and achievement at school - and announced efforts to give all children a more equal chance of succeeding. 'Deprived' This will include a "reading recovery" project in primary schools, where children who are struggling with literacy will receive one-to-one support to help them catch up - with the aim of tackling a persistent core of underachieving pupils. In a program that brings students from the Eisenhower Middle School, Freehold Township, to Freehold Borough to read to preschool pupils, Samantha Tramontano, 13, shares a book with Emily Briguez, 3, while Ruthie Flores, 3, looks on.
Most small children love to be read to, and the preschoolers at the Monmouth County Head Start program in Freehold Borough are typical, even though most are bilingual, and English is not their first language. Although words are not universal, pictures are and the eighth-grade students from the Eisenhower Middle School in Freehold Township are learning how that works. They are part of a unique collaboration with the Monmouth County Head Start, Freehold Center where they read to and interact with the 66 preschool children on a one-on-one basis. They not only read to the mostly non-English speaking children, they also teach them a craft. The collaboration is the brainchild of eighth grade teacher Helen Schwerin, who developed the program and applied for and was awarded a grant from the Coalition for Service Learning. The private coalition gets donations and distributes the money to different schools so that teachers can implement service learning projects, Schwerin said.

July/August 1997 Language-Rich Home and School Environments Are Key to Reading Success Children learn some of their most important reading lessons at the dinner table, according to a groundbreaking study By Leon Lynn Mealtime is often a young child's best opportunity to engage in "interesting conversations with adults," says Catherine Snow, a professor at Harvard's Graduate School of Education and a principal investigator with the Home-School Study of Language and Literacy. Those conversations, Snow says, give children the chance to develop and practice oral-language skills Snow and David Dickinson, a senior research scientist with the Education Development Center in Newton, MA, and the study's other principal investigator, believe the Home-School Study can provide meaningful guidance to teachers in preschools and elementary schools as they shape their classroom practices and consider how best to interact with children's families. Researchers have long known that early reading success is a strong predictor of academic success in later grades, because after grade 3, demands on the student change from "learning to read" to "reading to learn," as reading becomes a fundamental means for acquiring new knowledge about all subjects. A New Approach Traditionally, preschools focus on socializing children to function as part of a group, and on providing children with opportunities for free exploration of various learning materials. Some preschools also prepare young children for later schooling by stressing basic print-knowledge skills, such as identifying numbers and letters and learning the names of colors and shapes. In addition, preschools "have done a good job of getting the message out to parents that they should be reading to their kids," Dickinson says.

Good educational preschool software will expose youngsters to a variety of early learning skills including the alphabet, numbers, colors, shapes, patterns and sorting. Here is a look at the new Reader Rabbit Preschool: Sparkle Star Rescue! and Dr. Seuss Preschool , a classic title. 'Reader Rabbit Preschool: Sparkle Star Rescue! This new Reader Rabbit cleverly interweaves innovative activities into an interesting storyline. But here's the rub: some of those activities presume knowledge that many preschoolers don't have, and, therefore, parents will need to help their children through parts of the program. Kids travel around the Land of Sparkalot playing six games to collect Brillites, special stones that can cause an eruption in Mount Brill strong enough to dislodge the pirate ship. To play the different games, children use skills in sorting and matching shapes and colors, matching letters and sounds, and counting and addition.
