III. Preschool Reading and the Bilingual Child
Mariana and Elena Past Learn to Read English and Spanish How the Christian Children Learned to Read Spanish and English A Case of Korean/English Bilingualism and Biliteracy Plurilingualism and Pluriliteracy ... Summary If a monolingual child can get a headstart by learning to read before going to school, why can't a bilingual child get a double headstart by learning to read two languages before entering school? No one would deny the educational importance of skill in reading; nor would many deny the advantage of a knowledge of two spoken languages. The theoretical advantage of knowing how to read and write in two languages would seem to be self-evident, and yet biliteracy is rarely emphasized as an objective in our schools. This is an intriguing fact. Is there perchance a parallel between this fact and that other widely recognized fact that illiteracy and semiliteracy are common in our schools? If early readers rarely have difficulties in school, can we assume that bilingual children too would have no difficulties if they learned how to read in two languages before entering school? Personally I like Chester Christian's statement and implied solution of the problem: In an important sense, the education of those who speak two languages can never be "equal" to the education of monolinguals; it must be inferior or superior. Whether it will be the one or the other depends heavily on whether literacy is provided in only one or in both languages. (

Getting Your Child Ready
for Kindergarten by Kendeyl Johansen Parents often describe blinking back tears on their child's first day of school. Make sure you're fighting tears of nostalgia, instead of worry, by preparing your child in advance for kindergarten. Marie Geiger of Pittsburgh has enrolled 5-year-old Chris in a pre-kindergarten program and is using this whole year to ready him for school. "We talk about school often," says Marie. "My son is the type that does not generally adjust well to change, so we begin preparing him for things way in advance so he can get used to the idea." In Alabama, Beth Skarupa also used preschool to prepare her daughter, who is now 6, for kindergarten. "We read books a lot together and did reading lessons in a book I bought," says Beth. "I got a handout showing what skills she needed and I made sure she was able to do them." Jump-start Learning
Expectations for pre-kindergarten skills vary across the country. In Geiger's case, her school provided a list of more than 70 skills that pre-kindergarteners should know before entering school. "Most skills [Chris] is able to do, but some he doesn't do well or at all," says Geiger. She's helping him master difficult tasks, like tying his shoes and memorizing his phone number, without making a big deal of it. Dr. Laurie Ford, a child psychologist from the University of South Carolina who specializes in preschool development, agrees with Geiger's teaching philosophy. "Don't make everything a golden teaching moment," says Ford. "Rather, try to incorporate these behaviors into your daily routine. Formal attempts at preparing preschoolers for kindergarten can backfire, making children feel pushed and stressed."

Two books have to go at the top of the page here, both of which I used to teach my oldest son to read. They are
Let's Read, A Linguistic Approach
Leonard Bloomfield and Clarence Barnhart (Detroit: Wayne State U Press, 1961). 465 pages; index. Superb book by a brilliant linguist, Leonard Bloomfield, who knew how to teach well and who used a draft of this book to teach his own son to read, and by Clarence Barnhart, the famous dictionary compiler. This book's authors know the English language and how to teach it. Let's Read is so effective in teaching young children to read that for years its publication was resisted by the United States publishing industry, which depends on school textbook sales for outrageous profits from taxpayers. I am delighted that readers of this site told me that this wonderful book, which eventually was published by a university press after Bloomfield's death, is in print and readily available from Amazon.com. I bought the book (I had seen it in libraries before) and used it to teach my own son to read. The final story in the last lesson alone is worth the full price of the book as a motivation to independent reading. (Let your child discover the last line of the book for himself!) My son went from being almost a nonreader to being a fully independent reader after I helped him with this book and a few other books mentioned on this page. I especially like

The Sound Shopping Trip
Listening for the first sounds in words is an important step in learning to connect language and reading. What you'll need:
  • Magazines or catalogs with pictures of objects children know.
What to do:
  • Have your child choose a magazine or catalog. Invite your child to go on a make-believe shopping trip. Tell your child you will make believe you are shopping for things in the magazine. Have your child close his or her eyes. Point to an object on the page. Then have your child open his or her eyes. Ask "What are you going to buy?" If your child says, "A hat," ask, "What sound does hat start with?" Then say, "Good. Hat starts with the sound h
  • Repeat the steps, with each of you taking a turn shopping for something and then naming the first sound of the word that describes it.
Now You Hear It, Now You Don't
Hearing and saying the parts of words help prepare children to learn to read. What you'll need:

Tuesday, July 12, 2005 By June Kronholz, The Wall Street Journal
SYCAMORE, Ill. On a bright summer day, Hank Barnes settles into a chair across the table from his tutor, a pile of work between them and an hour's lesson ahead. Hank is four years old, and among the worries that prompted his mother to enroll him for two lessons a week at the Sylvan Learning Center here is this: Hank was behind on his scissor skills. As the academic pressure grows on the littlest learners to recognize their letters in preschool, to read in kindergarten so does the idea of toddler tutoring. After a two-year pilot program, Sylvan, owned by Educate Inc. in Baltimore, expects to have all 1,200 of its learning centers tutoring prekindergartners by winter. Kaplan Inc.'s Score Educational Centers says that about one in five of its 80,000 students is between the ages of four and six. Kumon North America, owned by Japan's KIE Corp., which operates cram schools there, has a junior program that accepts children as young as two. Many of Kumon's parents are Asian immigrants who believe small children are more capable than Americans generally think. Prices of these programs vary by company and region, but as a representative figure, Sylvan says its tutoring typically costs about $45 an hour.

A lot of flashing buttons, music, one-eyed monsters popping up and beeping, distract the child and keep him from learning rapidally. Testimonials.... The best things in life are worth waiting for. Today I received the Reading Lesson and set it up with Silvana, age 5, and she spent 3 hours (late afternoon hours) totally immersed. I am so psyched about your products. The graphics are so clean, the steps so simple and intelligent, sequenced and non-patronizing to the child. Thanks you for all the thought and care that went into this program and the lack of silliness. Janet Snoyer When my son was three-and-a-half, I began looking for books and programs on how to teach my son to read. My son soon became bored with books and the materials I found. I began using the Reading Lesson books and CD when he turned four. He is now four and a half and knows all the sounds of the letters, including vowel sounds and has begun blending. The program is so easy to use for parents. The software is beautifully animated and he instantly loved it. I have to literally tell him to that it is time to put the program away because he spends so much time on the computer with it. My son's preschool teacher always mentions how much my son knows. Thanks for your wonderful program.

Promote multicultural awareness and self esteem with this early childhood education activity by Matina Materials: Paper and a camera. Description: We made passports by stapling white paper to construction paper. Then from January until May we studied a different country. We studied Russia, Africa, Ireland, Israel, China, Antarctica, Australia, Mexico, Japan, France, Hawaii, and Saudi Arabia. Then for each country the youngsters wore a hat or a prop from that country (ex: France, beret). We took pictures of each child wearing his or her hat or prop. Then I glued the pictures into each child's individual passport and gave it to them along with a world traveler certificate at the end of the year. They had lots of fun "dressing up!" World Passport
