1. Home language and literacy experiences that lead to the development of key print concepts are plentiful among children who enter school prepared to learn to read. Joint book reading with family members helps children develop a wide range of knowledge that supports them in school-based reading. Once students are in school, parental help in the form of modeling good reading habits and monitoring homework and television viewing is associated with gains in student achievement. Programs that assist families in initiating and sustaining these sorts of activities show positive benefits for children's reading achievement. 2. Preschool programs are particularly beneficial for children who do not experience informal learning opportunities in their homes. These preschool experiences include opportunities to listen to and examine books, say nursery rhymes, write messages, and see and talk about print. Such preschool experiences lead to improved reading achievement in the school years, with some effects proving durable through grade 3. 3. Skills that predict later reading success

(To appear in The Reading Teacher The following study is a four-year, longitudinal examination of the effectiveness of a preschool emergent literacy intervention in a skid row child-care facility in downtown Los Angeles. The primary purpose of the project has been to provide multiple opportunities for Spanish-speaking four-year-old children to engage in a variety of reading and writing activities within the center, at home and in the surrounding community. The project is now in its third year of operation, and the results of our study have been very encouraging. Not only are preschool children beginning their kindergarten year on or above grade level in understanding concepts about print, but both preschool teachers and parents have established regular habits of shared book reading and numerous ways for children to write and display their work. READING AND WRITING Bibliotherapy in the Early Childhood Setting (Grades Preschool - 3)
Bibliotherapy is the art of using children's literature to help children understand difficult experiences and resolve developmental issues that may interfere with their growth. Participants will learn how to choose books that address developmental and experiential difficulties. Additionally, participants will explore how the use of story can help children better understand their own personal experience and how to make books to address children's individual and group needs. Overview of the Project
A classroom of excellence fosters a dynamic teacher, preschool, learner and parent relationship that nurtures appropriate cognitive, early language and early reading ability among other important learning outcomes (National Research Council, 2000). The learner is also nurtured to be emotionally and socially disciplined, psychologically grounded, and physically prepared to be actively, dynamically and joyfully engaged in learning in a way that moves him or her forward to literacy, academic competency, and upper grade level success. The classrooms of excellence are dynamic and have, at their center, students who are acquiring basic skills and competencies in oral language development, phonological awareness, alphabet knowledge, and print awareness (Schickedanz, 1999).

Literacy Standards for Preschool Learners
Redefining Literacy
By Elena Bodrova, Deborah J. Leong, and Diane E. Paynter, previously published in Educational Leadership Preschool and kindergarten educators can help young learners meet benchmarks for early literacy without sacrificing developmentally appropriate practice.
In recent years, major studies ( Why Children Can't Read, To support early literacy, school districts, state agencies, and national organizations are setting early literacy standards. Accountability for teaching literacy in early childhood classrooms will likely grow stronger rather than weaker. But the path toward implementing literacy standards in these classrooms will present challenges that are quite different from those in the higher grades. First, defining literacy in preschool and kindergarten requires more than adding "the student begins to . . ." to literacy standards borrowed from higher grades. At these early levels, the precursors of successful reading and writing often are not even called reading and writing. A young child's ability to draw and represent actions symbolically in dramatic play, for example, is not writing at all, but it is an important step in early literacy development.

    Language-Based Learning Disabilities
Language-based learning disabilities interfere with age-appropriate reading, spelling, and/or writing. This disorder does not impair intelligence; in fact, most people diagnosed with learning disabilities possess average to superior intelligence. Learning disabilities are caused by a difference in brain structure that is present at birth, is often hereditary, and often related to specific language problems. The term dyslexia has been used to refer to the specific learning problem of reading. Because of the increased recognition of the relationship between spoken and written language, and the frequent presence of spoken language problems in children with reading problems, the term language-based learning disabilities, or just learning disabilities, is more accurate.
