PIANO LESSONS AND MORE - 2004 REGISTRATION FOR UTAH STATE UNIVERSITY'S YOUTH CONSERVATORY
Published: Friday, July 30, 2004 Utah State University's nationally accredited Youth Conservatory (YC), celebrating 26 years serving young pianists in Cache Valley, announces its fall registration for new and returning students. A registration open house is Tuesday, Aug. 10, from 6-7 p.m. in the lobby of the Kent Concert Hall in Utah State's Chase Fine Arts Center.
An orientation for new members precedes the registration from 5:30-6 p.m. Students should accompany their parents, since placement tests are given during
the registration process. Attendance at the open house is the best way to secure placement, as space is limited and classes are filled on a first-come, first-served basis, according to YC program coordinator Brooke Reynolds.
A second registration will be held Tuesday, Aug. 31, also from 6-7 p.m. in the Kent Concert Hall lobby. An orientation for new members will likewise precede

Music Within Every Child
The ninth meeting of the ISME Commission for Early Childhood Music Education took place from 9 to 14 July 2000 at Queen's University in Kingston, Canada. 73 delegates and visitors participated in a full program of open forums, paper presentations, workshops and discussions pertaining to research and innovative practice in early childhood music education. The theme, Music Within Every Child, provided a continuum throughout the conference. The President of ISME, Einar Solbu, brought official greetings on behalf of ISME to the delegates at the opening session. During the session of "Spotlight on our Commission", the Commission members had introduced themselves, the history and the work of the Commission to the delegates, and sought for suggestions for revision and approval on the Vision and Missions Statements, as well as the Goals for the operation of the Commission. During the closing session, four longtime members were recognised for their individual contributions to the ISME Early Childhood Music Commission. Annie Langelaar (the Netherlands), Katalin Forrai (Hungary), Olive McMahon (Australia), and Donna Wood (Canada) were honoured with Certificates of Merit. Donna Wood was able to be present for the occasion. Special thanks was also given to Katharine Smithrim, who served admirably as Site Chair of this conference, and Mary Lou Van Rysselberghe, the 1998-2000 Commission Chair who provided capable leadership to the Commission in organising such a successful event.

Title - Who's that hiding underneath the blanket? Learning Name Game
By - Stephanie Jones
Primary Subject - Music
Secondary Subjects - Other
Grade Level - Preschool - Kindergarten
This was a favorite for the children in my son's preschool class, and I plan on using it the first week of school in a preschool class that I am teaching. This game is great for learning to take turns, learning each other's name, the child to learn his/her whole name, and to not be afraid when hiding alone. However, if the child is too afraid to hide underneath under the blanket, you can change it to "Who's that hiding behind the blanket?" What you will need: a throw size blanket children The children sit around in a big group circle the teacher selects (or one volunteers) a student to sit in the middle of the circle and the teacher covers the student with the blanket. Everyone sings (to the tune of 1 little, 2 little, 3 little Indians):

Exposure to live music in a concert hall setting creates a powerful, lasting impression which is capable of sparking the imaginations of the young musicians. The opportunity to both hear and see professional level performances presented, often even on one's own voice or instrument can be a truly inspiring experience for the developing musician - one which far surpasses that which is possible through television, radio or other recorded mediums. The Music Conservatory strongly encourages regular concert attendance for all those enrolled in private lessons.
As a part of their regular tuition all Music Conservatory private lesson students receive two free tickets (one student admission and one adult admission) to concerts that include a wide variety of solo, chamber music and large ensemble performances which are sure to appeal and inspire our Music Conservatory students. This concert series valued at $280! In addition, all CSU student performing organization concerts (Chorale, Orchestra, Wind Ensemble and Jazz Band] are free and open to the general public. There are twenty-two student concerts included in the Schwob School of Music calendar making a total of thirty-six free concerts for Music Conservatory families. Please ask your Music Conservatory private teacher or phone us at the Music Conservatory for details on how to get your free tickets to the Music Conservatory Concert series.

New Registrations
There is an annual information meeting the first Tuesday in June. The Kodaly Orff program has an ongoing curriculum, but new children can register throughout the year if the classes have space. For more information, call or e-mail: cms@capcollege.bc.ca
The Program
Classes are offered for children aged two to 8 years. The classes include activities that explore many different aspects of music: identifying musical concepts and symbols, ear training, singing, creative movement, improvisation and playing instruments.
Instruments
The children initially play simple rhythm instruments and pitched percussion (glockenspiels, metallophones and xylophones). Later, they are introduced to the recorder. At age seven, children may also choose an introductory course in guitar. top
Concepts
Using specifically structured but creative 'games', the children learn musical concepts such as dynamics, form and phrasing. Our focus is on developing skills such as singing in tune, recognizing melodic intervals and rhythm patterns, and reading and writing music. Music rhythms are first drawn in simplified notation and hand signs representing the sol-fa syllables (do, re, mi, etc.) are used to help the children recognize and correctly sing melodic intervals. Later, the simplified rhythmic notation and sol-fa syllables are transferred to the music staff.

The sound of music
Children learn to tap the 'music within' by Terry Tang In Lisa Chu's beginning violin class, the 3-year-old students aren't the only ones expected to pay attention. Knelt beside each child is a parent, poised to pick up either a bow or violin. The extra hand frees the kids to separately practice holding their instruments. The adults then move back to their chairs and the small classroom at Cubberley Community Center becomes an imaginary stage. Chu now must attract the three youngsters' focus away from their parents. And she reminds them that the performance continues after the final note. "Feet together and count to three for the bow," Chu said. "We bend at the waist and look at our shoes." Combining repertory structure with a preschool approach is what distinguishes The Music Within Us from most programs. Since the school's inception eight months ago, Chu has seen enrollment grow from two to 12 students. Beyond intense instruction, students are also offered opportunities to play in front of a live audience. Having already organized two local concerts, Chu is finally starting to see the fruits of her artistic labor.

Teaching Adults: the Rewards and the Challenges
by Ramona Kime Graessle One of the significant trends affecting music educators in this decade is that adults are living longer, retiring earlier, and maintaining healthier lives. There has also been a growing shift from a linear life plan - one that reserves education for the young, work for the middle aged, and leisure for the elderly - to a blended life plan - one that blends education, work, and leisure at all points throughout life (Cross). As a result, there has been a dramatic increase in the number of participants in adult education.

Joy Schools are well-established (over 100,000 parents have been teaching) and truly unique preschools. The central belief of Joy School is simply that children, while in their most impressionable years, should be taught life's most important thing, various capacities for joy. A related belief is that children suffer not from being started in academic learning too late, but in starting too soon, before they have a basis of social and emotional self-esteem. Do-it-yourself Joy Schools involve from 3 to 6 mothers who rotate as teacher, holding Joy School in their homes twice a week using the detailed lesson plans from this site which include all the music, stories, games, and activities to learn and teach one kind of Joy each month. Welcome to Joy School What is Joy School Setting up a Joy School Joy School Lesson Plans ... other kindergarten programs The Joy School curriculum is built around joy with the philosophy that happy children become strong students and well adjusted adults. For three and four year olds, "J.Q." (Joy Quotient) is more important than I.Q. (Time after time we are told by kindergarten and first grade teachers that Joy School graduates do better in school than kids coming out of pushy, early-academics preschools.)
