Now We Know What We've Always Suspected:
Music is Important for Young Children!
By Deborah Pratt, M.A.

Why Is Music So Important for Preschoolers?

Music is a valuable activity that contributes immensely to the development of a child. Here is some of the research that shows why, presented as it has unfolded over the last 15 years. Gordon Shaw and fellow researchers present a new model of the brain's neuronal structure.
Experiments in which musicians perform mental rehearsals of music indicate that music and other creative skills, such as mathematics and chess, may involve extremely precise firing patterns by billions of brain neurons (Leslie Brothers and Gordon Shaw in Models of Brain Function, edited by R. Cotterdill.)
Gordon Shaw and a fellow researcher propose that music may be considered a "prelanguage" and that early music training may be useful in "exercising" the brain for certain higher cognitive functions. (Concepts in Neuroscience, Vol 2, No. 2, P. 229-258)
At risk children who participated in an arts program that included music showed significant increases in overall self-concept. (N.H. Barry, Auburn University, 1992)

Significant Points
  • Public school teachers must have at least a bachelor’s degree, complete an approved teacher education program, and be licensed.
  • Many States offer alternative licensing programs to attract people into teaching, especially for hard-to-fill positions.
  • Excellent job opportunities are expected as a large number of teachers retire over the next 10 years, particularly at the secondary school level; opportunities will vary somewhat by geographic area and subject taught.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Teachers act as facilitators or coaches, using interactive discussions and “hands-on” approaches to help students learn and apply concepts in subjects such as science, mathematics, or English. They utilize “props” or “manipulatives” to help children understand abstract concepts, solve problems, and develop critical thought processes. For example, they teach the concepts of numbers or of addition and subtraction by playing board games. As the children get older, the teachers use more sophisticated materials, such as science apparatus, cameras, or computers. To encourage collaboration in solving problems, students are increasingly working in groups to discuss and solve problems together. Preparing students for the future workforce is the major stimulus generating the changes in education. To be prepared, students must be able to interact with others, adapt to new technology, and think through problems logically. Teachers provide the tools and the environment for their students to develop these skills.

Several years ago the Seattle Times published excerpts from the book Victory in Our Schools: We CAN Give Our Children Excellent Public Education, by Major General John Stanford, former superintendent of the Seattle Public Schools. The philosophical approach that he championed appropriately applies to MTNA and music teaching. "We would stop focusing on adults and begin focusing on children." Our MTNA mission statement reads, "... to support music and music making to society." Our children are our future. That is a statement that has been made many times over. In fact, a variation of that statement is President Bush's educational theme, "No Child Left Behind." Sports enthusiasts realize that and are introducing sports to children at younger ages all the time.

ABSTRACT Iowa Tests of Basic Skills (ITBS) mathematics scores of eighth graders who had received music instruction were compared according to whether the students were given private lessons. Comparisons also were made between students whose lessons were on the keyboard versus other music lessons. Analyses indicated that students who had private lessons for two or more years performed significantly better on the composite mathematics portion of the ITBS than did students who did not have private lessons. In addition, students who received lessons on the keyboard had significantly higher ITBS mathematics scores than did students whose lessons did not involve the keyboard. These results are discussed in relation to previous research on music training and mathematics achievement.

Music Lessons for 3 1/2 year old?
Feb 2002 My daughter is 3 and 1/2 years old and I am considering starting her with some kind of music lessons, but since I did not grow up in this country I have very little idea of the right age to start children in music, or which instrument is preferred by children (we cannot buy a piano). Someone suggested violin lessons, Suzuki method to me. Any thoughts, experiences or suggestions would be welcome. Thank you. Richa I'm not sure there is a ''right'' age to start children in music lessons because each child is different. I do believe 3 1/2 is a bit early for music lessons that will be tightly structured, but not too young for experimentation with various intruments. Structured music lessons at such a young age can sometimes make a child lose interest in playing his/her instrument. I have known many 7-8 year olds who have been forced into lessons, are good at their instruments, but don't really enjoy playing. As a result, they give it up when they are old enough to have a say. Musical Mom Here is my experience : I have 3 kids who started music lessons at a different age. The older one started at 7 1/2, the middle one at 6 and the youngest at 4. They all study the piano in a small group setting, the school is called ''do re mi''. We do not have a piano, just a keyboard, which was purchased for just a $100. Now the results : the older one took off very fast, jumped a class and is learning very easily, the middle one is doing good, and the little one is moving along with her class mates, who are all the same age, but it will take her twice as long to reach her older brother level. But I must admit that it is cute to see her play, and the teacher uses a method that makes it very easy for young children to understand the notes, their place and value. So my recommandation? I do not have any! a mother of 3

It is well know that children thrive when Religion is in their lives. The Preschool years are the perfect time to begin teaching your child about Christianity, God, and the Bible. The best way to do this is to bring Religion into your son or daughters everyday lives. If you are homeschooling or are planning to homeschool your child preschool then why not add Christian Preschool Bible Studies into your teachings as well. There are quite a few ways to do this. Do not "Preach" the Bible to your child... instead teach your child about God and the Bible through many Children's Bible Activities such as: I have listed two Preschool Bible Curriculums that I feel are amazing!! They have everything included to make teaching your Preschool age child the Christian Religion easier on the parent as well as fun for the child. The two Christian Preschool Bible Curriculums below work well when used with the

The Community Music School, ltd. is a non-profit tax-exempt corporation dedicated to bringing music classes to all children, regardless of their socio-economic status. Children in low-income environments may be at high risk for future social problems. Research shows that programs such as music lessons and ensembles can help to steer disadvantaged children in the right direction toward responsible, productive adulthood. Madison is a city that has many musical opportunities for children of middle and upper-middle class families. The Community Music School hopes to offer these same opportunities for children that cannot afford the cost of private or group lessons.
Volunteers are a key part of the operation of the school. University students with a background in music who need to fulfill volunteer requirements in order to graduate are the teachers in two areas; 1) private lessons for elementary/middle school-age children who have been identified by their music teachers as being talented and receiving free or reduced lunch and 2) group music classes in daycare/preschool centers that accept low-income children. PRIVATE MUSIC LESSONS The school continues to offer individual instruction in piano and band instruments. The skills, understanding and appreciation of music that your child attains now can be a source of enjoyment and relaxation throughout his or her life. Our students develop a sense of music appreciation through the ability of learning an instrument. Lessons are offered to students in preschool through grade 12 during the school day and after school. A student has the option of a 30 minute lesson or a 45 minute lesson, scheduled once a week. Enrollment and fees for music lessons are by the semester. The student has the advantage of school convenience, equipment and space, plus qualified professional teachers. Make-up lessons are not scheduled due to family trips, school field trips and school closings. Payment for the lessons is treated as tuition and is nonrefundable. For a current list of private music teachers, lesson rates or to enroll your child in music lessons for the current school year, please call Mrs. Belfor at 979-0303. When you enroll your child in piano or band lessons, we ask that you make arrangements for purchasing or renting the appropriate instrument before lessons begin. BLOOMINGTON, Ill.Does Mozart's music build mental muscle?
According to psychologist-cellist Frances H. Rauscher, music can play a key role in mental development and school performance.
Rauscher will discuss her research findings on the so-called "Mozart Effect" and participate in several programs, Jan. 25-26, at Illinois Wesleyan University.
Rauschera Juilliard-trained concert cellist with a doctorate in psychology from Columbia Universitysays her studies show that " . . . music plays a crucial role in early childhood development," adding that experiments she conducted with a team of researchers prove "unequivocally that music lessons improve a child's performance in school."
However, Rauscher cautioned in an April 8, 1998 Education Week article: "One of the things we have to be careful about is jumping to conclusions that we don't have data on at all. I find that [the] 'Mozart makes you smarter' thing is quite a bit of a leap."
IWU Itinerary During Rauscher's two-day IWU visit, she will deliver a lecture, "The Musical Brain: Effects on Intelligence," on Monday, Jan. 25, at 4:30 p.m. in Westbrook Auditorium, Presser Hall (IWU's School of Music), 303 E. University Ave., Bloomington. Her presentation, which will be attended by IWU School of Music students and faculty, is open to the public, free-of-charge.

Supplement My Child Loves Music but I Can't Carry a Tune in a Bucket: A Guide to Preschool Music Making Background Information from Dr. Harwood Common Misconceptions Misconception One: Learning music means singing or playing an instrument such as the piano or violin. Young children can be musical in a wide variety of ways, including rhythmic chanting; bouncing their bodies; trying exploratory vocalizing; singing spontaneous songs of their own making (with and without words or exact pitches); using simple percussion instruments that rattle, shake, hit, or scrape; singing along to songs for children and moving to recorded music; and joining in on a family sing-along on car trips. Misconception Two: The parent or teacher needs to be a musician in order to teach music to young children. Although musicians can certainly provide some unique and valuable experiences for children, a musically rich environment can be provided by anyone. Research shows that extensive early pleasurable experience with music is an important factor in later musical achievement. More important, research indicates that early involvement with drill and practice or mastering technique as often presented in private music lessons may actually deter children from further study. So in the early years, if you and the children are enjoying music together, this foundation is the best you can give them. Make it, listen to it, and share it.
