Pre-K Math Study of Algebraic Thinking
During the course of their pre-k math studies, students will explore patterns and develop a sense about what properties are. They will create patterns and order objects according to size, shape, color, and detail. The children will be asked to copy physical patterns, describe pattern attributes, and use the concepts of 'greater than', 'less than', and 'equal to'. Using every-day objects pre-k math students will learn to describe the similarities and differences they see. They will use memory game matching cards and will be asked to collect and sort objects.

Preschool Math Standards
Preschool math - also known as pre-kindergarten or pre-k math, provides an opportunity for children younger than kindergarten age to get a basic understanding of counting, shapes, and other very simple math concepts. These very young children learn through stories, songs, rhymes, finger-plays, and other creative methods that make preschool math fun for them.

    One plus One is.....
Mathematics is not my forte. My husband loves math, excels at math...but alas he has to work.....so I'm teaching it, well sort of.
    In the Beginning
Simple pre-school math is very easy to teach. When you are setting the table at night, the four year old will count on his fingers how many plates to put on the table, how many cups, how many forks etc. They soon grow a little older and you tell him, "We have six boys and two girls, how many plates do we need?" Beginning math is easy to teach and parents usually teach it without realizing it, just like speaking, colors, etc. We have enjoyed the Saxon math series for the younger kids. We did purchase the Saxon K math program and do use it because the pre school and kindergarten age child is always asking to "do math." It is very simple, not very time consuming and a great tool for the parent and child to learn learning styles and to get in a rhythm of "school." It is a great time to have one on one time with the younger children especially when your older children demand so much of your time. The Saxon math 1-3 are wonderful, scripted math lessons teaching everything from the basic 1+1, calendaring, patterns and money to geometry, multiplication and division. With my first I was very "follow the book" but after going through it I have relaxed with my younger ones. Not only do I now know how to teach it, but the younger children were usually listening in as I taught the older children so they know most of what is coming next.

Published on: February 12, 2001 1. What are your teaching objectives? If you don't have a set then look around and decide what it is you are trying to teach. If you are using different text books or one set curriculum, look at what your kids are working on. The solar system? Multiplication? Treasure Island? That is your starting point. You certainly don't want to give your kid's busy work. Give them work that reinforces what you have been teaching them. You may also find you don't have to reinforce everything. If they have the concept then move on. 2. Look through the worksheet before you download it. Will it really benefit learning? Is it too hard? Is it too easy? I find sometimes I will save a worksheet and realize my child has passed that level already or maybe I was just shooting for the stars on it. You know what your kids will listen too and learn so be selective. 3. Organize your worksheets. You can either print them out or download them. If you print them, then put holes in the sides and either put them in your kid's notebooks under the approriate study area, or put them in your planning book behind your lesson plan for the week. That way when your daughter is ready for the worksheet on long a there is no searching for it at all. Here it is Suzie...now let's get to work. O.k., here are just a few sites that offer FREE worksheets. The joy of all of this is there are plenty more where these came from and new worksheet sites opening up every day. From time to time do a search on Yahoo, AOL, and Google and get ready to start bookmarking. Happy printing!

    Nature of the Work
Working Conditions ... Sources of Additional Information
    Significant Points
    • Public school teachers must have at least a bachelor’s degree, complete an approved teacher education program, and be licensed.
    • Many States offer alternative licensing programs to attract people into teaching, especially for hard-to-fill positions.
    • Excellent job opportunities are expected as a large number of teachers retire over the next 10 years, particularly at the secondary school level; opportunities will vary somewhat by geographic area and subject taught.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Teachers act as facilitators or coaches, using interactive discussions and “hands-on” approaches to help students learn and apply concepts in subjects such as science, mathematics, or English. They utilize “props” or “manipulatives” to help children understand abstract concepts, solve problems, and develop critical thought processes. For example, they teach the concepts of numbers or of addition and subtraction by playing board games. As the children get older, the teachers use more sophisticated materials, such as science apparatus, cameras, or computers. To encourage collaboration in solving problems, students are increasingly working in groups to discuss and solve problems together. Preparing students for the future workforce is the major stimulus generating the changes in education. To be prepared, students must be able to interact with others, adapt to new technology, and think through problems logically. Teachers provide the tools and the environment for their students to develop these skills.
