What makes a difference in the early years of children’s schooling?
July 2005 Introduction Early years education has become a key feature of national policy in the UK as government, local education authorities and schools try to find ways of making a difference to the lives of young children and their families. Research (such as Feinstein, 2003 - see Further Reading) has shown that children from low socio-economic status (SES) backgrounds are particularly at risk of under-achievement or even failure at school; research in the USA and Canada has also shown that that targeted intervention at an early stage can make a lasting difference for the better. The Effective Provision of Pre-School Education (EPPE) Project team set out to make a contribution to evidence-based policy and practice in this area in a number of ways. Working for the Pre-school Learning Alliance
The Pre-school Learning Alliance is a national educational charity representing and supporting 15,000 community-based pre-schools. These pre-schools provide early education and care for more than half a million children under the age of five.
The Alliance is dedicated to supporting community pre-schools; through training courses leading to recognised qualifications at levels 2 and 3. It offers a wide variety of other courses for parents and pre-school staff. It also provides quality assurance systems, local visits by skilled advisers, a range of helpful publications, membership advice and help lines, support with marketing and PR, fundraising, finance and personnel issues.
There are nearly 100 employing sub-committees across the country, many running pre-school settings. Over the next year we will be opening around 25 neighbourhood nurseries to provide full day care and support for young children and their families. Job opportunities are advertised on the website, in nursery related magazines or journals, in local press and Alliance regional centres. Developmentally Appropriate Practices

    What Is Early Intervention?
    These days, community preschool programs are increasingly likely to have at least one child with disabilities in their classes. Although providing early intervention to children with disabilities in an inclusive or integrated environment designed to meet the needs of ALL children is commonly regarded as best practice (Salisbury, 1991), concerns are sometimes raised about the ability of preschool programs to meet the needs of children developing normally as well as those with developmental delays. This digest examines research on preschool programs that include children both with and without disabilities.
    Appropriateness For Children With Disabilities
    Children with disabilities also display more advanced play in inclusive settings than they do in self-contained classrooms. However, Odom and Brown, in a discussion of social interaction skills interventions (Peck et al., 1993, p.39-64), note that even in inclusive settings, young children with disabilities are more likely to engage in noninteractive play, are less likely to participate in play groups, and are chosen as playmates less frequently than are their peers without disabilities.

    Have you been to IKEA lately? They have a wallpaper design (unfortunately always displayed in a boys room) depicting the earth seen from the moon. In addition to its being a very beautiful picture, it also provides food for thought. I see a planet with continents linked by oceans and with a common atmosphere. With clouds that move freely and water systems that are not isolated from each other. It can be difficult to see the larger contexts in everyday life. We must often take a step back to get things into perspective and see more clearly how everything hangs together. Thanks to the first space travellers we obtained photographs of our planet that made it clear to us that, wherever we live on the planet, it is the same air we breathe and the same water we drink.
