About the Programs Child Development Laboratory (CDL) The Child Development Laboratory is a part of the Department of Child Development and Family Studies and is located in the Child Development and Family Studies building. CDL serves the department by providing a model early childhood program that offers undergraduates opportunities to teach young children and by supporting child development research. Preschool classes are offered for children between the ages of 6 weeks to 5 years. The classrooms are staffed by professional head teachers who have master's degrees in child development or early childhood education and extensive experience leading educational programs for young children. The program, established in 1926, was the first nursery school in Indiana. Purdue Child Care Program (PCCP) The Purdue Child Care Program, located in Fowler House, serves families with children ages 2 to 5 years. The foundation of our program is a belief in the uniqueness and intrinsic value of each child, parent, student, and staff member. We believe children actively construct their own knowledge by experimenting with, and reasoning about, things and events around them. We also believe children learn best in a supportive, nurturing, and safe environment in which individual and cultural differences are valued. Our highly qualified and nurturing staff provides a developmentally appropriate environment, allowing children to grow cognitively, socially, emotionally, and physically at their own pace. The program was founded in 1983.

Literacy Standards for Preschool Learners
Redefining Literacy
By Elena Bodrova, Deborah J. Leong, and Diane E. Paynter, previously published in Educational Leadership Preschool and kindergarten educators can help young learners meet benchmarks for early literacy without sacrificing developmentally appropriate practice.
In recent years, major studies ( Why Children Can't Read, To support early literacy, school districts, state agencies, and national organizations are setting early literacy standards. Accountability for teaching literacy in early childhood classrooms will likely grow stronger rather than weaker. But the path toward implementing literacy standards in these classrooms will present challenges that are quite different from those in the higher grades. First, defining literacy in preschool and kindergarten requires more than adding "the student begins to . . ." to literacy standards borrowed from higher grades. At these early levels, the precursors of successful reading and writing often are not even called reading and writing. A young child's ability to draw and represent actions symbolically in dramatic play, for example, is not writing at all, but it is an important step in early literacy development.

Education Department Press Release
Secretary Paige Announces Nearly $15 Million in Grants to Improve Teaching Skills of Early Childhood Educators
Projects will train educators using scientific research; Early Childhood Educator Academies planned for this fall and spring Building on Laura Bush's nationwide efforts to highlight the importance of early childhood cognitive development, U.S. Secretary of Education Rod Paige has announced grants totaling $14.6 million to improve the knowledge and skills of early childhood educators in communities with high concentrations of poverty. Last year, Mrs. Bush held the first White House Summit on Early Childhood Development during which she challenged education leaders to focus on the critical cognitive development stages of children from birth through age five. "The years from the crib to the classroom represent a period of intense language and cognitive growth," offered Mrs. Bush at the White House Summit. "We all have the duty to call attention to the science and seriousness of early childhood cognitive development." The funded projects are built upon scientific research on early childhood teaching and child development and learning. Teachers who work in preschools located in high-need communities and who serve children from low-income families will participate in professional development activities to improve children's language and cognitive skills and to prevent reading and behavior problems as children enter and move through school.

Distance Learning For Teachers
Adds A New Dimension by Michael DeCourcy Hinds New ways for teachers to learn may add up to better
education for young children. Growing awareness of the research, though, has begun to build momentum for preschool reform. The term refers to substantial improvements in the care and education of millions of preschoolers as well as the expansion of quality programs to millions of other poor and under-served children. Universal preschool, say some, is as inevitable as its timing is uncertain. Today, the greatest part of the educational challenge is bringing caregivers into the teaching profession.
A Pioneering Effort Suggests the Scope of the Challenge The revolution in early education presents quite a challenge for Head Start, the federal preschool program that has a staff of 180,000 in 18,200 centers for approximately 860,000 children around the country. But Head Start has long been a leader in teacher training, largely because of its policy of recruiting one-in-three staff members from its own community of parents with low-incomes and limited education. The program consistently allocates two percent of its budget for teacher training and technical assistance; that works out to be $130 million of the $6.2 billion budget for 2001.

University of Manitoba, Winnipeg, Manitoba,
CANADA R3T 2N2 The terms nursery and preschool are used interchangeably to refer to part-time, center-based programs with a focus on education or socialization of young children. For convenience and conciseness, this article uses only the term nursery to refer to programs of this type. It does not discuss nursery programs that are full-time, since these are more often called child care or day care, and are discussed elsewhere in this volume. By providing extended access to peers and to planned experiences at an impressionable time of life, nursery programs can potentially influence children’s overall development, hopefully in good ways. This article summarizes research about this possibility. It begins, however, by describing the nature and extent of nursery programs, followed by briefly explaining their historical origins, and then by describing current issues in nursery programming. NATURE AND EXTENT OF NURSERY AND PRESCHOOL Characteristics of Nursery and Preschool Extent and Distribution of Nursery and Preschool Programs ORIGINS OF MODERN NURSERY AND PRESCHOOL PROGRAMS By the middle part of the twentieth century, "nursery school" tended to connote an enrichment experience for children for families for those whose circumstances allowed such participation. The connotation contained a grain of truth, but was not (and still is not) entirely accurate. In the 1960s, for example, the American federal government launched Project Head Start as part of its "war on poverty" in the United States. The Project provided nursery-like programs for thousands of pre-kindergarten children and their families. Unlike the majority of traditional nursery programs, however, Head Start drew its clientele primarily from low-income communities. It also aimed, among other goals, at teaching pre-academic skills (especially language arts) that would prepare children for school and protect them from school failure.

Significant Points
  • Public school teachers must have at least a bachelor’s degree, complete an approved teacher education program, and be licensed.
  • Many States offer alternative licensing programs to attract people into teaching, especially for hard-to-fill positions.
  • Excellent job opportunities are expected as a large number of teachers retire over the next 10 years, particularly at the secondary school level; opportunities will vary somewhat by geographic area and subject taught.
Nature of the Work About this section Back to Top Teachers act as facilitators or coaches, using interactive discussions and “hands-on” approaches to help students learn and apply concepts in subjects such as science, mathematics, or English. They utilize “props” or “manipulatives” to help children understand abstract concepts, solve problems, and develop critical thought processes. For example, they teach the concepts of numbers or of addition and subtraction by playing board games. As the children get older, the teachers use more sophisticated materials, such as science apparatus, cameras, or computers. To encourage collaboration in solving problems, students are increasingly working in groups to discuss and solve problems together. Preparing students for the future workforce is the major stimulus generating the changes in education. To be prepared, students must be able to interact with others, adapt to new technology, and think through problems logically. Teachers provide the tools and the environment for their students to develop these skills.
