At the same time, parents may notice a decrease in appetite. Some children seem to eat virtually nothing yet continue to grow and thrive. Children who are beginning to walk have an endearing physique, with the belly sticking forward and the back curved. They may also appear to be quite bow-legged. By 3 years of age, muscle tone increases and the proportion of body fat decreases, so the body begins to look leaner and more muscular. Originally designed for low-income, "at-risk" children, the High/Scope® approach is now used for the full range of children and has been successfully implemented in both urban and rural settings both in the U.S. and around the world. As more and more states and local school districts move toward universal or targeted pre-kindergarten programs, they must consider which curriculum model to adopt, how to train staff, and how to measure the program's quality and effectiveness. High/Scope's child development orientation makes it highly compatible with various state standards for early childhood learning and with Head Start outcomes.

A Child Becomes a Reader

Proven Ideas for Parents from ResearchBirth to Preschool
When does a child learn to read? Many people might say in kindergarten or first grade. But researchers have told us that children can begin to learn reading and writing at home, long before they go to school. This booklet offers advice for parents of children from birth to preschool on how to support reading development at home, and how to recognize preschool and day care activities that start children on the road to becoming readers. To take children seriously is to value them for who they are right now rather than seeing them as adults-in-the-making. Thus, what we ask them to do should have "horizontal relevance," . . . It ought to be "meaningful to them at the time" for example, related to something that could happen on the way home from school. Mere "vertical relevance" isn't enough: there's a reason to be concerned if the only justification for learning something is that students will need to know it later for example, as part of the following year's curriculum.
-Alfie Kohn (1999) The Schools Our Children Deserve I hope you will reflect on the above quote when you teach in the preschool classroom. The big question many parents, teachers and other educators often ask is "How can we prepare children for kindergarten?" The question is in itself problematic because it implies that children have to be prepared for kindergarten. It also so implies that children need to be ready for kindergarten while ignoring what we know about children's development, how they learn, and that they are "eager to learn" long before preschool. The big questions should be related to the here and now:

    Program Description
Poway Unified School District preschools have used Scholastic’s Early Childhood Program curriculum since 1997. The central goal of the program is to help guarantee that young children will develop the necessary skills, knowledge, and life habits to become successful learners, especially in their language and literacy development. The program is designed to ensure that children's language and early reading skills will develop in accordance with the four critical areas outlined by the Early Reading First legislation: oral language, phonological awareness, print awareness, and alphabetic knowledge. The curriculum emphasizes language development and early literacy integrated in the following areas: mathematics, science, social studies, the arts, and physical, personal and social development. The preschool program supports children's development of knowledge, skills, and processes that will help them make sense of themselves and the world around them. It provides young children with informed instruction that supports them as they actively investigate novel concepts, skills, and processes and reexamine known ones.
