Playgrounds Family Resources Introduction Infant Development Toddler Development Pre-School Development As children move into their preschool years (ages 3-5), learning becomes much more concrete. As parents, you may begin to wonder, "Is my child going to be ready for kindergarten?" It's important to remember that children at this age learn best through play. As adults, we need to think about what we put in the child's environment and how we interact with them to promote learning. Families promote literacy by reading and discussing books with children. It's important to make sure that the children understand what is read to them before they learn the mechanics of reading. Point out the words as you read them and ask the children to point to pictures or identify them. When children recognize familiar logos of businesses and products, they are beginning to read. You can reinforce this by creating a book or poster with familiar words. Children also learn from the adults in their lives, so when they see you reading and writing, it reinforces the importance of literacy. Children develop math skills by helping with everyday routines. Ask your child to count out the napkins, plates, or cups when they help you set the table. Count the steps as you walk down them.

We believe the Christian family is the framework for children to learn socialization and cognitive skills. Our goal is to continue this process by emphasizing the growth and development of the whole child. The Preschool has created its own, copywrited curriculum that focuses of five areas of development:
  • Along with our curriculum to guide teachers, we make sure teachers and classrooms are equipped with the tools needed to help children grow in these areas. Teaching Methods Some of the many tools that provide the basic framework for both the Toddler as well as the Early Childhood Program are listed below.
    • Manipulative toys chosen for age appropriateness, these toys build skills that help little fingers grow to accomplish more complicated tasks. These activities become more challenging at each age and include clay, play dough, puzzles, finger painting, sand, water play and more.
    • Pretend is one of the ways children learn to socialize, respond appropriately to situations and find security in themselves. It is also an opportunity to let their imagination and creativity run free.
    • Playground time includes tricycle paths, swings and climbing toys. These activities let children challenge their young bodies with a friend at their side.

    By MARILYN BROWN mbrown@tampatrib.com
    Published: Jul 19, 2005
TAMPA - At the same time Florida launches its voluntary prekindergarten program, it's pulling the plug on scholarships for child care workers to get the credentials they need to teach. Those already enrolled in programs through the federally funded T.E.A.C.H scholarships may keep their scholarships, said Gladys Wilson, deputy director of Florida's Office of Early Learning. But June 30 was the application cutoff, prompting concern from some. ``That's crazy,'' said Simone Johnson, owner of EduCare Academies Child Development Center in Tampa. ``Many workers won't be able to get formal training without that scholarship.'' Johnson is completing her Child Development Associate equivalency credential on the T.E.A.C.H. scholarship and said some of her preschool center employees have done the same. Students pay 20 percent of the cost to earn the credential. Employers pay 10 percent, and the scholarship picks up the rest of the cost, which can total more than $1,200. ``It would really be hard for an employee to pay the entire cost,'' Johnson said. ``Many workers don't even have their own car.''

Teaching Teens to Teach (Round Two) teaches early childhood education to teens through Kids Down South Preschool.
    (South Eugene High School)
South Eugene High School would like to continue to fund an early childhood educationally trained individual to serve as a mentor and instructor of our teens who work in our on campus child development center. We would like to hire an assistant for 2.5 hours a day, two days a week.
    Why is this project important?
The need for and importance of additional staffing can be emphasized by further understanding of our center. Kids Down South, a Eugene District 4J childcare center located in South Eugene High School, has been in operation since the fall of 1992. We are an exceptional child development laboratory preschool with a strong reputation for exemplary preschool education. We are recognized by the State Department of Education as a model high school early childhood development program. We operate a five day a week morning program during the school year and a five week summer program.
We serve both typically and atypically developing children and we have a partnership with the early intervention agency ECCARES. We serve as a practicum site for University of Oregon Master level program students as well as South Eugene High School students who are enrolled in our Child Psychology and Advanced Child Psychology classes.

sitemap I absolutely LOVE "Now I Know My ABCs and a Whole Lot More"! I have tried several other curriculum books and the children seem to really enjoy this series. They love being able to relate each activity to the letter of the week!
Julie G. I do love the book! I copy lessons out daily and my daycare kids love the stuff in the book. Not to mention that the parents love it to. I think that the parents are to busy to teach at home, so books like this are really great. The children were able to get a good grip on the curriculum. We all had fun doing the projects. I have given out your web site to many of my daycare providers friends and i have showed them your book. Thank you and i really hope that all the people that have bought this book feels the wonder in the book too.
