Welcome to Anthropology 1301 World Prehistory: An Introduction Course Description This is an introductory course to the two-million-year-old archaeological record of human prehistory and fulfills the University's Social Life Science Foundation requirement . The course is divided into roughly three parts:
  • The first part deals with the techniques archaeologists use to discover and interpret the past in the absence of a written record The second is concerned with the long period from the beginning of the archaeological record to the end of the last glaciation (roughly two million to ten thousand years ago), a time span that witnessed many of the most important events in the human past, including the appearance of fully modern Homo sapiens The third part covers the two most important developments of the past ten millennia, namly the "invention" of agriculture and the appearance of state societies (civilization)
Course Outline The material for each of the three sections of this course is presented through a series of weekly modules. Each week, three or four modules, which utilize several different types of multi-media, will be released to students on Web-CT. Each module contains individual lecture notes supplemented with a few additional components such as assigned readings from the textbook, photos, audio and video streams, scientific articles and internet links.

The Prehistory of Powered Flight - An Overview
Leonardo discovered and analyzed several of the basic principles of aerodynamics and physics and designed machines (but, in most cases, did not fly them) that applied these principles. He wrote prolifically, and it was only because his written works were lost for centuries that his influence on other inventors was not greater than it was. His writings included hundred of sketches that illustrated his observations of flight in nature and the inventions he designed. He wrote and drew on key problems of aeronautics, including action and reaction; the structure of wings, carrying surfaces, and landing gear; and even devices for directional control. Others in the next centuries took tentative steps toward flight. Various individuals tried to imitate the motion of birds and built apparatus with flapping wings called ornithopters. Sometimes they attached wings to their arms and sometimes also their legs. Some mounted winged devices that they manipulated in various ways and occasionally added foot-pedal power. Although a few were able to travel short distances, others died when they jumped off roofs or towers and they and their devices crashed to the ground. Other experimenters tried gliding rather than flapping. In general, these were more successful than the flapping efforts, although the distances were still very short. In any case, many claimed to have flown but, not surprisingly, few had witnesses or could offer proof. Cayley's work influenced inventors for at least the next fifty years. Both unpowered gliders and planes that were powered by engines were attempted. Gliders were built that progressively could fly farther and farther and over which the pilots gradually gained control. Some of these gliders were outlandish-looking devices with various types of wing designs that had one, two, three, or even more flying surfaces. Some had short stubby wings while others had wings that were extremely long and narrow. In France, the founding of the first aeronautical society, the Soci‚te A‚rostatique et M‚t‚orologique de France, in 1852, marked the recognition of aviation as a legitimate discipline. Louis Charles Letur built and tested a parachute-glider, which was the first pilot-controlled machine to be tested in flight. Michel Loup, Jean-Marie LeBris, and others built flying machines that were modeled after birds.

I am a student of international relations in Estonia and would like to know: how the women-participation in World politics have changed through the centuries? I guess it has decreased...but I need a bit conformation to my thoughts...or maybe it has increased? To explore this, you can access our site's Current International Issues web links. It is difficult to make long historical comparisons. For research purposes, perhaps citing some trends over the last century, including some areas where women have lost ground ( where their traditional decision making roles have been preempted by trans-national corporations or by national laws) would be sufficient. Back to Topics Women's Histor y Justified Kim's question: I'm not entirely convinced of the validity of women's history because going back through the ages and dredging up information about possibly not very significant figures and glorifying them on the basis that they are women seems a bit like distortion to me. How does women's history validate itself as a "proper" form of history and not just an extension of the women's movement?

Leader: Ian McNiven Offered:
Clayton Second semester 2005 (Day) Synopsis: Explores how archaeologists and related scientists have developed an understanding of the long-term evolution of human cultural diversity. Students will gain an appreciation of how archaeologists have documented the spread of humans across the globe over the last 2 million years. Numerous case studies will reveal how archaeologists use physical evidence from the earth to understand the evolution of past cultures. Areas of investigation will range from the dawn of humanity in Africa and the Ice Age peoples of Europe and the Americas, through to the ancestors of the Polynesians and Aboriginal Australians. Themes include the origins of spiritual beliefs, art, and burial practices. Objectives: The overarching aims are to provide students with a broad understanding of how archaeologists have constructed a long-term picture of the evolution of human cultural diversity across the globe. On successful completion of this subject, students will be able to: 1. Understand key periods in the evolution of humanity in terms of changes in culture and patterns of global colonisation. 2. Appreciate why humans in different parts of the globe differ culturally. 3. Appreciate the origins of art and spiritual beliefs and question what it means to be human. 4. Appreciate the broad range of techniques used by archaeologists to infer behaviour from prehistoric remains excavated from the earth. 5. Develop basic skills in critically evaluating archaeological findings and theories. 6. Appreciate major scientific debates in understanding human origins and long-term cultural developments.

Details of the bid to hold the Games In 1994, as a result of the decided venue for the 1997 World Games, Africa's Port Elizabeth City bowing out, the IWGA had to quickly find an alternative venue for the World Games. The possibility of hosting the Games was first sounded out by Councillor Morooka (now Board of Directors) through Professor Morohoshi of Minnesota State University's Akita Campus. As the World Games was an attractive prospect, combining high-level sports events with community participation, and as it could also become a commemorative event to mark the opening of the Akita Shinkansen line in 1997, Akita's economic leaders prepared a bid. However, at this time the preparation time needed was too short, and the candidacy bid was shelved.
At such short notice, the IWGA decided to make Finland's Lahti City the hosts for 1997 due to their rich experience in holding international sporting events.

              By David Keys, Archaeology Correspondent
              Published: 05 July 2005
Humans arrived in America 25,000 years earlier than previously thought - at least 40,000 years ago - footprints found near Mexico City have proved. British and Mexican archaeologists said the discovery of the prints, made in volcanic ash near the town of Puebla, 80 miles south-east of Mexico City, will force a total rewrite of humanity's early migrations and is one of the most important archaeological finds of recent decades. The evolution of Human Species followed different stages beginning with the Australopethicus and continuing with homo habilis, homo erectus and homo sapiens. The last stages include those people who lived thousands of years ago in the Palaeolithic and Neolithic Age and are the immediate ancestors of modern man. The discovery of the evolution of man is attributed to two scientists of the 19th century: Sir Charles Lyell and Charles Darwin.

JVC's 70 years have been marked by many technological innovations and groundbreaking product introductions. In 1959, JVC developed the forerunner of today's VCR when it launched the KV-1, the world's first two-head helical scan VTR. The 2 head helical scanning system is now used in virtually every analog video recorder in the world; a color version of the KV-1 made its debut in 1960.
In 1963, JVC developed and marketed the smallest two-head, 1 inch VTR with a built-in TV monitor. The company introduced the color video cartridge recorder, the prototype of today's U-Format VCR, in 1966.
In 1969, JVC invented the "color under" color recording method used in U-Format, 8mm video, Hi-8, VHS and S-VHS. The process was an important step in making color VCRs affordable.
A VCR incorporating a tuner and timer was introduced by JVC in 1972. Two years later, the company developed the world's first color portable VTR system and the world's first 3/4-inch U-Format VCR with noiseless still and pause functions.
One of the biggest milestones in JVC's history was its introduction of the VHS format in 1976 which launched the global video revolution. A decade later, the company received an Emmy Award for its achievements.
