General Geographical Features
The main islands sit astride an important tectonic boundary which has shaped, and is still shaping, the country today. Active geological processes can still be observed today including volcanism and earthquakes. References:

Prehistoric New Zealand About 200 million years ago (mya) Gondwana land began to drift apart. Africa and South America were the first to go, but about 80 mya New Zealand also broke away, first from Australia, and then from Antarctica. The initial twist of the split swung the land mass towards the pole, with temperatures falling, but subsequently it moved slowly north and conditions improved again. It took with it dinosaurs, birds, the ancestor of the tuatara, a number of frogs, many invertebrates and a selection of typical Gondwana vegetation. Although early evidence of mammals was found in Australia they did not appear to make it to, or survive in, prehistoric New Zealand. Modern mammals such as we would recognise began to evolve about 37-24 mya.

J. G. Savage, Brian Gardiner, Douglas Dixon Hardcover 312 pages Revised and Updated edition (October 1999) in print This is a very good non-technical introduction to prehistoric vertebrates . Although there is a brief coverage of basic background topics - how fossils form, continental drift, etc - by the far the most interesting, and indeed the bulk, of the book is the coverage it gives to a large number of individual genera (more than 600 altogether, from primitive fish to Pleistocene mammals), each of which is illustrated by a specially commissioned full-colour painting. It is the sheer number and diversity of creatures covered here, that makes this book so interesting. (But even that diversity is just a tiny fraction of all the types of prehistoric creatures that are known to science). The realism of the art work tends to vary - some drawings seem to me more realistic than others, but I suppose that's just personal taste. The art work is still of good quality throughout though, and often represents the only life-reconstructions available for creatures otherwise shown only as drawings of skeletons in

none given Have human populations altered ecosystems and extinguished species prior to developing advanced technology? We know that extinction is a natural event – is it also natural for humans to be the agents of extinction, even widespread extinctions? We examine these questions by focusing on human-induced animal extinction, particularly the extinction of North America’s megafauna at the end of the Pleistocene. Human-caused Plant Extinctions Most of the available evidence (so far as I know) concerns over-hunting of animal populations. But it seems likely that "man the gardener" (or "woman...") might have significantly altered plant communities. Artificial selection for desirable plant attributes has occurred since the dawn of agriculture. Deforestation and irrigation were taking place on a grand scale by 4,000 years ago. Fire was used as a way to drive animals to killing sites, and it is thought that fires were more frequent due to Native American populations. Human-set fires are thought to be responsible for extinction of native palms on Easter Island. Human-domesticated grazers such as sheep are credited with widespread desertification in Middle East. Surely plant extinctions resulted. Human-caused Animal Extinctions Human hunting is credited with a number of extinction events between 10,000 and 50,000 years ago. Extinction of large mammals in Africa are thought to have happened earliest, and least catastrophically, because of the long association (co-evolution) with humans. Extinction of large flightless birds (moas, 13 species, 20 to 200 kg) in New Zealand is attributed to the Maori, who arrived ~1000 AD and may not have completed this extinction until ~1800. The most argued example is the Pleistocene extinction in North America, some 10,000 yrs ago, attributed to the arrival of humans in the Americas.

SYMPOSIUM Where the Wild Things Were The Flintstones , the entertaining but historically flawed cartoon, much of the hunting illustration is simply preposterous. Illustration by Regan Dunnick New Yorker article about the Ebola virus in Africa. The article, which evolved into a best-selling book, The Hot Zone , documented how a once-obscure disease jumped between species, somehow becoming lethally virulent in the process. The bones and teeth of mammoths and other extinct mammals may hold evidence of a pathogen that led to their demise. MacPhee and his colleagues have traveled to remote places like Wrangel Island (off the coast of northeastern Siberia in the Chukchi Sea), where some of the best mammoth specimens can be found. They hope that marrow extracted from mammoth ulnas and femurs will contain an ancient killer microbe. Though the ecological irony of this parallel is tempting, MacPhee stresses that hyperdisease is still only a theory. Until pathological evidence of disease is found in giant mammal DNA and RNA samples, his theory will have to compete with the other extinction hypotheses.

Dinosaurs and Prehistoric Mammals
for Villains and Vigilantes A popular mainstay in comic books, movies, and popular fiction is dinosaurs. These "terrible lizards" capture peoples fear and fascination in large part because we know they were real. Dragons and faeries are fine to spice up a role playing game, but occasionally it's good to get down to earth! Most of these stats were made up over a year ago - and some almost 12 years ago, when Villains and Vigilantes first came out. With renewed interest in Villains and Vigilantes , I thought it was time to dig them up again. Dinosaur movies abound on TV and the big screen, dinosaur fiction is available in any new or used book store. There are plenty of materials available with ideas for using dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals in your campaign. Now, here are the stats. These stats will work equally well in both Villains and Vigilantes and the Rules Upgrade, requiring no modifications. If a Rules Upgrade character wants to have one of these animals as a pet, build it from scratch using the weight and Agility listed as guidelines. Your pet will most likely end up with higher stats than those listed here, but super-pets should be above average. Dinosaurs Prehistoric Mammals Time Periods Adventure Ideas ... Several dozen tons of ivory are recovered from the vast reaches of northern permafrost every year. Most of those tusks come from trunk-bearing animals which became extinct in the late Pleistocene era. Several species of mammoth and mastodon represent the sources of this ivory. Its value lies not only in its venerable age but also in the fact that thousands of years of being buried has often led to changes in color. From brown to turquoise to nearly black, these different colors can be used by the skilled craftsman to achieve wonderful effects. And, of course, it is especially suited for the depiction of prehistoric animals. These pieces serve as examples of Gross's versatility in ivory carving as well as price guidelines for new orders. Bundy-Voyles Site (12 MG 1) A total of 6,024 specimens were analyzed out of an estimated total count of 33,000 specimens of recovered bone. A total weight of 6,248 grams for the analyzed specimens compares to a total weight of bone from the site of 29,420 grams. The strategy employed to sample the faunal remains from the site was designed to include a large sample from the midden deposit (Feature 1) and to sample several smaller features that also contained significant botanical remains (features 8 and 13). The summary data for the site is presented in Table 1, "Faunal Remains from 12 Mg 1," which lists material divided into major taxonomic groups and unidentified vertebrates, mammals, birds, reptiles/amphibians, and fish. Within the mammal, bird, and fish categories, material that was not identifiable to family, genus, or species level was placed within appropriate size classes of the taxon. Prehistoric tusks point to earliest fossil evidence of differences between sexes
Findings point to complex social behaviour by Nicolle Wahl Jan. 23, 2003 The large tusks of an animal that roamed Earth before the dinosaurs may provide the earliest evidence yet of male-female distinctions in land animals that existed millions of years ago, say U of T scientists. Robert Reisz , a biology professor at the University of Toronto at
Mississauga, and his team have found convincing evidence of sexual dimorphism - different physical traits between the sexes of the same species - in their study of fossils from between 252 to 260 million years ago. They believe that the male Diictodon , a herbivorous barrel-shaped creature, had two large tusks extending down from the upper jaw. The tusks, Reisz says, were used as weapons, possibly for ritualistic or physical combat.
