USDA: Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education [RealOne Player, pdf] http://www.sare.org/about/index.htm Since its inception in 1988, the USDA’s “Sustainable Agriculture Research and Education (SARE) program has helped advance farming systems that are profitable, environmentally sound and good for communities through a nationwide research and education grants program.” This nicely organized website presents a wide array of information and resources for farmers, ranchers, educators, researchers, and consumers interested in sustainable agriculture. Agriculturalists and others will be interested to learn more about SARE grant guidelines, and to peruse reports for approximately 2,500 previously funded projects. SARE posts upcoming events; and maintains an online collection of books, bulletins, and other resources through the Sustainable Agriculture Network. Site visitors can also view a 14-minute video about SARE, or simply order a free copy for themselves. [NL] Back to Contents Back to Top

The coverage of the Systematics section is about as deep as its going to be. Although we treat Linnean taxonomy with a sympathetic hand, this is essentially a cladistically-organized site. Particular problems in systematics are treated in detail at so many points particularly in the vertebrate area that it would be impractical to summarize it all here. The vertebrate section also contains a fairly non-technical defense of the cladistic approach (not methodology) which may be worth consulting. See Cladograms

With entries for more than 600 species, each arranged in its evolutionary sequence, the book presents a panorama of enormous diversity, from predatory dinosaurs to primitive amphibians, from giant armored fish to woolly mammoths, saber-tooth tigers and dire wolves. Each entry features a specially commissioned full-color painting prepared according to the best research of today in close collaboration with world-renowned paleontologists. The records of the rocks fossil bones, teeth, skin, hair and even footprints and nests have been combined with knowledge of the anatomy and behavior of present-day descendants to arrive at informed judgments about posture, color and other aspects of appearance.

Reading habit promotion in ASEAN libraries
Somsong Sangkaeo
Library Activities Sub-section
National Library of Thailand
Bangkok, Thailand
Abstract
This paper describes the different activities that ASEAN Libraries have undertaken to promote reading by increasing awareness among thier people. Firstly, factors limiting reading habit in ASEAN Libraries have been approached. Secondly roles of local institutes or organizations in helping libraries conducting reading habit promotion have been acknowledged. Finally some suggestions on effective methods and successful programs of reading habit promotion by ASEAN Libraries have been collected.
Paper
Reading is important for every body in order to cope with new knowledge in the changing world of the technological age. The importance and necessity will hopefully continue to increase in the years to come. However, the number of those who know how to read but do not read enough is also increasing. There are still some people, young and old, who cannot get access to reading activities and reading programs at all and some people who are able to read do not get access to such activities and programs, but in a dissatisfactory degree of relationship. They neither have much initial interest nor lasting interest in books and reading. The reading habit has to be built up and promoted from an early age.

Wednesday, July 31, 2002 Big Bone Lick park joins historic trail

By Jim Hannah, jhannah@enquirer.com
The Cincinnati Enquirer UNION
There are 93 designated sites on the trail. None is in Ohio. The journey, commissioned by Jefferson, that mapped the American West celebrates its 200th anniversary next year. Meriwether Lewis and William Clark left Clarksville, Ind., in 1803, with their Corps of Discovery. On their journey to the Pacific, which took until 1805, they were to search for a navigable waterway from the Atlantic to the Pacific, map the Louisiana Purchase and record the culture of Indian tribes and the area's flora and fauna. Shawna Hare (center) and her children, Landen, 3, (left) and Caylin, 8, look over the bog display at Big Bone Lick State Park, Boone County.

Clark went to Big Bone Lick in 1807 to study and collect fossils of mastodons and mammoths at the request of Jefferson, who heard of the giant bones and thought the creatures might still live in the West. The Louisville mansion, Locust Grove, was the estate of Clark's sister Lucy Clark Croghan.
