They first appeared about 225 million years ago and continually evolved to inhabit diverse environments and geographic areas; indeed, dinosaur fossils have been found on every continent. For more than 100 million years dinosaurs were the dominant terrestrial animals. Then, about 65 million years ago, dinosaurs (or, as some scientists would put it, "non-avian dinosaurs") and many other species became extinct within a geologically brief period of time.

    http://dsc.discovery.com/convergence/beasts/know/uhen.html
September 25, 2005 Answers from Dr. Mark D. Uhen
Q: We know that predatory sharks once came in a much larger size (megalodon). But do we have any evidence of the prehistoric existence of an outrageously large whale?
    A:
This one is easy. The answer is no. The largest whale ever to have lived is the blue whale, Balaenoptera musculus , and it is alive today. No fossil whales that we know of are as large as the blue whale.
Q: If Basilosaurus is a type of extinct whale, why does it have the name "King Lizard?"
    A:
An excellent question. The name Basilosaurus was applied to a fossil found in Louisiana because at the time, the person describing it thought it was a giant sea reptile of some sort. Later, when it was discovered that the animal was actually a mammal, someone else tried to change the name, but according to the naming rules, once you have a name on an animal, you are stuck with it, no matter how inappropriate it is.
Q: How do you find out what a prehistoric creature ate or what ate it?
    A:
The first thing that we do to figure out what an animal ate is to look at their teeth. If we look at animals today, we see that animals that eat meat have triangular, blade-like teeth, and animals that eat plants have rectangular, bumpy or ridged teeth. We can also look at the way the teeth are worn to find out about how they used their teeth, which can often tell us more about diet. Lastly, sometimes we get stomach contents preserved along with the skeletons of prehistoric animals. In fact, we have found the stomach contents of both Basilosaurus and Dorudon, and we know that both ate a variety of fish.

February 5, 2003 Ever wonder where our worst nightmares come from? For the ancient Greeks, it may have been the fossils of giant prehistoric animals. The tusk, several teeth, and some bones of a Deinotherium giganteum, which, loosely translated means really huge terrible beast, have been found on the Greek island Crete. A distant relative to today's elephants, the giant mammal stood 15 feet (4.6 meters) tall at the shoulder, and had tusks that were 4.5 feet (1.3 meters) long. It was one of the largest mammals ever to walk the face of the Earth. "This is the first finding in Crete and the south Aegean in general," said Charalampos Fassoulas, a geologist with the University of Crete's Natural History Museum. "It is also the first time that we found a whole tusk of the animal in Greece. We haven't dated the fossils yet, but the sediment where we found them is of 8 to 9 million years in age." Skulls of Deinotherium giganteum found at other sites show it to be more primitive, and the bulk a lot more vast, than today's elephant, with an extremely large nasal opening in the center of the skull.

Related Category: Agriculture, General animal husbandry, aspect of agriculture concerned with the care and breeding of domestic animals such as cattle, goats, sheep, hogs, and horses. Domestication of wild animal species was a crucial achievement in the prehistoric transition of human civilization from hunting-and-gathering to agriculture. The first domesticated animal seems to have been the sheep, which was tamed around 9000 B.C. in N Iraq. Around 6500 B.C. , domestic goats were kept in the same region; about 6000 B.C. the pig was domesticated in Iraq; about 5500 B.C. there were domesticated cattle in SW Iran, and around 3000 B.C. the horse was domesticated in Russia. Nothing is known of the early development of husbandry; selective breeding for the improvement of livestock was already practiced in Roman times. Continuing systematic development and improvement of domestic livestock breeds, established in England following 1760 by Robert Bakewell and others, has been paralleled by advances in animal nutrition and veterinary medicine

utside, despite the sun, a biting cold lingers at Vallon-Pont-d'Arc on this day, December 18, 1994. But down here, the damp clay generously exudes a fine fragrance and the temperature is pleasant. The silence is deadening and the darkness total and impenetrable: we are some thirty feet below ground. The adventure is about to begin for Jean-Marie Chauvet, Eliette Brunel-Deschamps and Christian Hillaire, all bound by the same passion: potholing through the hidden depths of their region.
While busily exploring a cave, they are intrigued by a draught of air. On closer inspection, they discover a cavity, then a vast network of galleries and rooms. From then on, their progress is punctuated by amazement and emotion. Under the stark light of their miner's lamps a breathtaking backdrop unfolds: gigantic columns of white and orange calc-spar, alternately translucent and nacreous, splendid draperies of minerals, sparkling carpets... Scattered on the ground are the bones of bears, some of them inside hibernating shelters; the walls are scratched with claw marks... Suddenly, Eliette gasps: the image of a small mammoth has just appeared before her.
