GENERAL INTRODUCTION: PREHISTORIC TIMES [Excerpted from Philip Van Ness Myers, Ancient History, Revised Edition (Boston: Ginn and Company, 1904), pp. 1-12] The Antiquity of Man. We do not know when man first appeared upon the earth. We only know that in ages long past, when both the climate and the outline of the continents were very different from what they are at present, primitive man roamed over them with animals now extinct; and that, about 5000 B.C., when the historic curtain first rises, in some favored regions, as in the valleys of the Nile and the Euphrates, there were nations and civilizations already venerable with age, and possessing arts, governments, and institutions that bear evidence of slow growth through very long periods of time. [The Book of Genesis, which the Christian Church holds to be a divinely inspired record, fixes no definite date for the beginning of human life on the earth.] The Prehistoric and the Historic Age. The uncounted millenniums which lie back of the time when man began to keep written records of what he thought and did and of what befell him, are called the Prehistoric Age. The comparatively few centuries of human life which are made known to us through written records comprise the Historic Age. In the valleys of the Nile and the Euphrates there have been discovered written records which were made at least four or five thousand years before Christ; so we say that the historic period began in those lands six or seven thousand years ago. On the island of Crete numerous inscriptions have recently been found that apparently were written as early as the fourth millennium B.C. These, however, have not yet been deciphered. Some written records used by Chinese historians seem to go back to the third millennium before our era. In other regions the historic period still begins for us at a much later date. Thus the truly historic age did not open in Greece and Italy until about 800 or 700 B.C., and for the countries of Northern Europe, speaking broadly, not until about the beginning of our era.

This site presents three introductory palaeoentomological articles relating to palaeoichnology - the study of insect trace fossils, insects preserved in amber and insects in rocks. Each article includes clear descriptions, numerous colour images and references. The articles are provided by Meganeura, a palaeoentomological Newsletter published by the University of Barcelona, Spain. Ichnology; Paleoentomology; Insects, Fossil; Amber fossils;
American Museum of Natural History. Amber : window to the past
Developed as a Web companion to an exhibition at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) in New York, this site contains images and descriptions of organisms preserved in fossilised amber. The site describes the conditions required for amber fossil formation and how fossils were used to recreate a 23- to 30-million-year-old Dominican amber forest, which features in the exhibition. Other features include amber in art, amber varieties and the cultural significance of amber. Amber; Amber fossils; Amber/Inclusions; Amber art objects;

Australia's lost kingdoms
This interactive Web site is hosted by the Australian Museum to complement the "Australia's Lost Kingdoms" exhibition. The site provides interesting information on geological time and fossil formation, with a primary focus on events that have shaped Australia's environment and biodiversity. The site includes "fact files" on the climate, flora and fauna of Australia during each geological period, with comparisons to the rest of the world. Interactive, educational, activities provide information on fossil formation and identification, and on possible causes of animal extinctions. Video clips provide a visual timeline of changes in the Australian environment (RealPlayer required). This site can be enjoyed by people of all ages. The Black River Fossil Club comprises a small group of amateur fossil collectors from South Carolina who have chosen to use the internet to stimulate interest and share knowledge on collecting fossils. Unfortunately the flashing advertisements distract from the images of their personal collections. The weekly tooth page contains the scientific name and location of interesting finds. Discussion forums are in progress on fossils in general, artefacts and sharks teeth. Links to other sites, with a short personal description, are provided. 01 EUSTHENOPTERON (Greek:'strong fin')
The ancestors of the four-legged land vertebrates are to be found among the fleshy-finned fishes. The only surviving fleshy-fins, however, are the famous coelacanth (Latimeria) of the Indian Ocean and three genera of lungfish, all of which are cousins of the land vertebrates rather than their ancestors. More typical was Eusthenopteron from the Upper Devonian (350 million years ago) of North America and Europe. This carnivorous fresh-water fish, 1-2 feet long, had lobe like fins with strong muscular bases, nostrils which opened into the mouth and primitive lungs. In times of drought It could crawl on land from pool to pool in search of water and food. 02 ICHTHYOSTEGA (Greek: 'fish roof')
Half-way from fleshy-finned fish to amphibian was lchthyostega, 3 feet long, from rocks of eastern Greenland laid down in fresh water at the end of the Devonian period (345 million years ago). It still had a tail-fin like that of a fish and a remnant of the bones covering the gill-chamber but it is considered to be the earliest known amphibian because of the well developed limbs and limb girdles which are essentially those of a land animal, and the backbone was strengthened to support its weight when out of water. lchthyostega was probably truly amphibious in its habits. 03 ERYOPS (Greek: 'long face')
This was a typical member of the labyrinthodonts, the large amphibians of the Carboniferous, Permian and Triassic. Eryops itself lived in Texas, Oklahoma and New Mexico in Early Permian times (about 260 million years ago). It was a large, bulky animal, 5-6 feet long, which probably lived a truly amphibious life like that of modern crocodiles; the rather flattened head, armed with big teeth, suggests that it was a fish-eater. The backbone and other parts of the skeleton were very strongly built; it crawled slowly and awkwardly on its belly, pushing with its short bent legs. Bony nodules in the leathery skin formed a heavy armour.

Opinion response exercise Should fossil animals be cloned? I count about 55 no's, 18 yes's or maybe's, and 2 undetermined. RMR I have highlighted 11 opinions that were frequently cited by other students in the class as either especially well expressed or as giving new insights. RMR 9/17/02 I realize that I may have been ambiguous about when this assignment is due. This one will be due next Tuesday (9/17) by classtime, to make sure you've got some time and we have the logistics finished, but in the future I'll try to avoid "crossover" between working on different questions. The "global warming" opinion is due by classtime this Thursday (9/12). Please read through the directions first before starting to read the opinions. Instead of asking everyone to read all the responses, which I think might be overwhelming, I will divide it up as follows: If your name begins with the letters A to D, please read responses 1 to 19 If your name begins with the letters E to K, please read responses 20 to 38 If your name begins with the letters L to N, please read responses

Description:
Prehistoric Animals is a Key Plus/Keynote datafile. It contains information on over 500 prehistoric animals including, of course, the dinosaurs. A variety of information is available in each record including statistics on height, weight and length. There is information on habitats and localities - given that the continents have moved since some of the creatures were alive! The field with information on geological time periods is particularly useful in investigating the development of the animals. Further fields give details on body structure, feeding behaviours, body covering and special protection. Where possible, there are details of breeding and reproduction. A final field indicates present-day species in order to help illustrate the continuity of evolution. The datafile is supported by an extensive photocopiable booklet with information sheets and worksheets.
