DINOSAURS AND PREHISTORIC ANIMALS
The World a Million Years Ago
Inside the dome was a moving concourse that carried visitors around the exhibit. First you passed groups of prehistoric men and displays of prehistoric animals. Then there was one huge pit with ten of the large monsters swaying, stamping, and roaring in a realistic swamp-jungle setting. A Dinosaur was 50 feet long with a neck reach of 16 feet. A Prehistoric Ape was 10 feet tall. The Mammoth weighed 4 tons. Inside the Mammoth were 16 motors, giving him 32 primary and 800 secondary motions. Other animals included the Platybelodon (shovel-jawed elephant), Giant Ground Sloth, Sabre-toothed Tiger, Wooly Rhinocerus, and Brontosaurus. The cries emitted by the animals were based on the shapes of their throats and thoraxes, which led to inferences about the volume and character of their chest tones.
Mammoth
Mammoth is the Russian name for an extinct species of gigantic elephant which roamed the black, cold regions of the earth during the Pleistocene Peeriod. Towering at a height of ten to twelve feet, the Mammoth weighed about twenty tons and was thickly covered with hair. The tusks of the Mammoth curved upwards and ranged from ten to twelve feet in length.

of sites that describe or relate to prehistoric animals and particularlydinosaurs. dinosaurs of Ancient Queensland prehistoric dinosaur exhibition
http://www.remedia.com/remedia/dino.html
There are a huge number of sites that describe or relate to prehistoric animals and particularly dinosaurs. This links page is designed to be used in conjunction with REMedia's Prehistoric Animals CD-ROM disk. The CD-ROM contains many animations, movies and interviews that are either not available on the Internet or take a painfully long time to download with a 28.8K modem. Several of the sites listed below have information on many different aspects of prehistoric animals and the evolution of life on Earth. Once in one of these sites, you'll probably want to spend some time browsing around. Be warned, however, that some sites have areas for both the layperson and the scientist. If you suddenly find yourself on a page that seems very complex, just hit the back button on your browser. Exploring the Internet is a voyage of exploration, and you'll probably find a lot of extra links that are not mentioned here. Happy hunting!
When we look around us, we see a variety of different animal groups, from fish to birds, from tiny insects to huge mammals like the elephant and blue whale. These animals were not always on the Earth, however. When our planet was first born, it was too hot and inhospitable a place for any animal or plant to live. In the billions of years since the Earth cooled down, the climate and geology of our planet have stabilized, and the amazing variety of animals and plants that we see today have gradually evolved.

Produced in collaboration with the Los Angeles Natural History Museum, Los Angeles, California Prehistoric Animals charts the evolution of animal life, from the strange fossils found in the Ediacaran Hills of Australia through the magnificent dinosaurs right up to the amazingly well-preserved saber-toothed cats and mastodons of the La Brea Tarpits. This CD-ROM documents the evolutionary advances made by the major animal groups and shows that although the dinosaurs were an important part of Earth's history, they are just a part of the exciting story of the prehistoric life on our planet.
Use the Prehistoric Animals Database to research nearly ANY species of prehistoric animal that ever lived!
Click on photographs to view enlarged images, and print the photographs in full color!
Animations show important processes, for example how early life forms appeared.

30. Prehistoric Animals That Are Not Dinosaurs
How can you tell when a prehistoric animal is not a dinosaur?
http://www.dinoworld.net/notdinos.htm
WHEN IS A "DINOSAUR" NOT A DINOSAUR It surprises people to learn that eleven animals at Dinosaur World are not dinosaurs. Many of them resemble dinosaurs, and the better-known ones, such as Dimetrodon , are included in many books about dinosaurs. You can download a free e-book about these animals (non-dinosaurs) here Actually, dinosaurs themselves are not dinosaurs , because that name means literally "terrible lizards," and scientists now do not consider dinosaurs to be very lizard-like. One of the major distinguishing characteristics of dinosaurs is that they walk with their legs straight down, not out to the side (as if doing push-ups) like modern lizards ( below ) and alligators ( right To be considered a dinosaur, an animal must be an extinct reptile that had scales, laid eggs, and did not walk with the push-up posture. Scientists say that dinosaurs lived in the Mesozoic Era , which began 225 million years ago at the end of the Paleozoic Era , and ended 65 million years ago with the dawn of our Cenozoic Era The Mesozoic Era is divided into three periods: Triassic Jurassic , and Cretaceous The following Mesozoic animals lived in the same era as the dinosaurs, but they are classed as different types of animals:

Pre Lab OBJECTIVES:
  • Comparing dinosaurs and prehistoric animals. Contrasting dinosaur eating habits.
VOCABULARY:
  • extinct prehistoric mammal herbivore carnivore
MATERIALS:
  • crayons
Students color a worksheet comparing dinosaurs and prehistoric animals. BACKGROUND: A common mistake made by manufacturers of dinosaur toys and games is to call dinosaurs "prehistoric" animals. Strictly speaking, the term "prehistoric" means before written history. Dinosaurs certainly lived before humans or writing, but in practice prehistoric is used by most people to refer to the time from the beginning of the Ice Age (the Pleistocene Epoch, beginning 1.8 million years ago) to the beginning of written history. Classifying dinosaurs as prehistoric leads to incorrect notions, for example, that the dinosaurs were contemporaneous with large mammals like mammoths and saber-toothed cats, or worse, that dinosaurs lived at the same time as humans. The second goal of the Pre lab is to introduce the concept of eating habits and food types. Different dinosaurs ate different types of food. The Mesozoic dinosaurs included carnivores (meat-eaters), herbivores (plant-eaters) and omnivores (plant- and meat-eaters). Paleontologists can tell what different dinosaurs ate by looking at the shape of their teeth and the shape of their bodies and comparing them with the shapes of modern carnivores, herbivores and omnivores. Teeth are the most common type of vertebrate body part found as fossils because they are denser and more resistant to chemical destruction than the other bones in the vertebrate

This is a starting collection of photo's of Origami folds of Dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals. I fold these models, using directions from different books, make a photo of them with the camera of my SGI workstation, and put them on the website. Apologies for poor quality of pictures, and in some cases, the folds have small errors (which are usually not visible due to the poor quality of the photo.) J. G. Savage, Brian Gardiner, Douglas Dixon Hardcover 312 pages Revised and Updated edition (October 1999) in print This is a very good non-technical introduction to prehistoric vertebrates . Although there is a brief coverage of basic background topics - how fossils form, continental drift, etc - by the far the most interesting, and indeed the bulk, of the book is the coverage it gives to a large number of individual genera (more than 600 altogether, from primitive fish to Pleistocene mammals), each of which is illustrated by a specially commissioned full-colour painting. It is the sheer number and diversity of creatures covered here, that makes this book so interesting. (But even that diversity is just a tiny fraction of all the types of prehistoric creatures that are known to science). The realism of the art work tends to vary - some drawings seem to me more realistic than others, but I suppose that's just personal taste. The art work is still of good quality throughout though, and often represents the only life-reconstructions available for creatures otherwise shown only as drawings of skeletons in
