Advocates for Youth
Alford S, Huberman B, Moss T et al . Washington, DC: Advocates for Youth, 2003. [48 p.]
http://www.advocatesforyouth.org/programsthatwork/index.htm

An exhaustive literature review identified over 160 evaluations of programs. Nineteen were selected for inclusion in this document. None of the effective programs was abstinence-only. Each of the 19 effective programs reduced the incidence of pregnancy or STIs and/or affected two or more of the following behaviors: 1) delaying the initiation of sex; 2) reducing the frequency of sexual intercourse; 3) reducing the number of sexual partners or increasing monogamy; 4) increasing the use, or consistency of use, of effective methods of contraception and/or condoms; and/or 5) reducing the incidence of unprotected sex.
Science and Success includes charts indicating whether the program is school- or community-based, the age and race/ethnicity of youth with whom the program was evaluated, the program's important components, evaluation findings, replication findings, and contact information on where to obtain the program and training to implement it.

Academic Programs Department Profile Meet the Department Head Signature Areas ... Giving History Department Heads The first woman to head the department was Amy Bloye, a departmental instructor before the move from the School of Science. When she retired in 1953, Dr. Gladys Vail became department head until she moved to the position of dean in 1962. At that time, Dr. Mary Fuqua became department head until 1966, when Elwood Reber took that position. Dr. Reber held that position until 1973. Dr. Helen Clark was acting head until Dr. Paul Abernathy was hired in 1974. Dr. Connie Weaver was promoted to this position in 1991 when Dr. Abernathy desired to step down. Leading the Way Significant Research There has been major research conducted in this department.
  • In the 1940s, Dr. Ceclia Schuck studied requirements for and sources of ascorbic acid. Gertrude Sunderlin developed a "Master Mix" that was used widely in the preparation of baked goods in homes and institutions. Ruth Johnson did research on meat and eggs in cooperation with Animal Science and Poultry Departments.

The Road To Pregnancy
Is It Time To Ask for Directions?
Getting pregnant and having a baby seems like the "thing to do" these days. In addition, advancing reproductive technology is constantly in the news . Depending on what you read or who you ask, there are many potential reasons for what seems to be a growing number of folks who have trouble conceiving "the old-fashioned way." Like most people, the term "infertility" may be a word that you've never pondered the meaning of before now. Thanks in part to the growing presence in the media of news about fertility and the lack thereof, many folks are becoming conscious of the possibility that infertility may indeed refer to them. It's a scary thought, so scary that lots of people never quite get around to thinking it. If it helps to soften the edges, you might try thinking instead of "conception difficulties", "sub-fertility" or in some cases, "difficulty carrying to term". At any rate, "infertility" simply refers to the inability to conceive or impregnate, and possibly to the inability to successfully maintain a pregnancy after conception. Infertility is not, in and of itself, a disease; rather it is a condition often caused by disease, although not necessarily.

    A. Sophie Rogers Laboratory for Child and Family Studies
PURPOSE: The A. Sophie Laboratory for Child and Family Studies has served the University and Columbus community since 1923. The program is a setting where University students learn strategies to promote cognitive, physical, social and emotional development for young children. The setting is also a site for observation and research in human growth and adaptation. The goal is to offer an exemplary program for your children and their families through which students can learn about human development and the educational process. PHILOSOPHY: Each child is unique. All children bring their own patterns of growth, abilities, life experiences, and values to the learning environment. We begin with a respect for each child's rights. These rights include active exploration of the world around them, security, warmth, autonomy, a positive self-concept, self-expression, peer relationships and acceptance. At the same time, we strive to help each child expand beyond his or her current state to become a more fully developed person. We seek to create the richness and diversity of experience that will take the children along new paths, deepen their understanding and their skills, and give added complexity to the talents and personal qualities they bring to us. Our philosophy is soundly based in child development and educational theory including the work of Piaget, Vygotsky, Erickson, Dewey, and Reggio Emilia, Italy.

Applied Resources Adolescent Pregnancy Volume 3, Issue 4, Winter 1998 EDITOR'S NOTE Over the past twenty years, teen pregnancy has received increased attention, demonstrated by policy reform, program development, and services for young teen mothers and their children. In this issue, Suzanne Bartholomae and I review the consequences associated with teen pregnancy and the risk factors that could serve as intervention targets. We argue that as practitioners we have the opportunity via intervention to test the adolescent pregnancy models put forth by basic researchers. One such program, "Project Taking Charge," is shared by Jerelyn Schulz. Aspects of the successful development and implementation of this national program are discussed. In addition, Judy Kimberly, Jerry Bean, and Bob Hughes examine the importance and methods of evaluating teen pregnancy prevention programs. Issues discussed include the theory application, target group selection, and community involvement. Laurie L. Meschke, Issue Editor

Coalition Capacity Building to Prevent Teen Pregnancy
In 2002 CDC funded the cooperative agreement "Coalition Capacity Building to Prevent Teen Pregnancy" with 3-year national organizations and five state teen pregnancy prevention coalitions. The purpose of this three year project is to build state and local capacity through the use of science-based principles to prevent teen pregnancy and promote adolescent reproductive health, including abstinence, and prevent STDs and HIV.
    Program Activities Include
*Disseminating information about science-based teen pregnancy prevention programs to organizations working with youth on the national, state and local levels
*Developing and convening a science advisory panel
*Providing targeted technical assistance to implement and evaluate teen pregnancy prevention programs
*Mobilizing communities to implement programs with a strong science base
The national organizations have created a science advisory panel to help develop and clarify a knowledge base of teen pregnancy prevention, and are providing technical assistance to state and local organizations to implement, translate, and disseminate science-based teen pregnancy prevention programs.

    16 JANUARY 2004
C ongratulations! You've just been hired for a tenure-track assistant professor position at a prestigious university. Or maybe you've just received a government grant to conduct a groundbreaking study. But you've also reached an age at which it may not be a good idea to, yet again, put off starting a family. The average age for receipt of a Ph.D. is 33, which puts tenure at age 40, even if you don't do a postdoc. If you decide to start a family, will you be able to take a paid leave after childbirth? What if you need to take leave during your lab project to assist your spouse with a newly adopted infant? How would you be perceived by your colleagues if you took leave during the probationary period to care for an elderly parent? When making important career choices such as these, all faculty members should know whether "family-friendly" employment policies are available to them. Unfortunately, many faculty members are not aware of such policies, even when they do exist. Furthermore, research shows that work/family policies are underutilized, as faculty members perceive that they may somehow be seen as "not fully dedicated to their profession" if they also try to make significant time for family responsibilities. Since 1915, the American Association of University Professors (AAUP) has worked to advance academic freedom and to define fundamental professional values and standards for higher education. Today, AAUP seeks to address the conflict between the expectations of an academic career and family care-giving by providing guidelines for helping faculty members more effectively exercise their family responsibilities without damaging their career prospects.

Three sectors of human reproduction are taken up for consideration: childbirth, contraception, and conception. Panelists are invited to consider, amongst other things, cultural politics at individual, familial, and kinship levels; third party involvement and public anxiety around dispute and uncertainty; human morality, ethics and the political and cultural economy of emotions.
