To eat well during pregnancy you must do more than simply increase how much you eat. You must also consider what you eat. Although you need about 300 extra calories a day - especially later in your pregnancy, when your baby grows quickly - those calories should come from nutritious foods so they can contribute to your baby's growth and development. Why It's Important to Eat Well When You're Pregnant
Do you wonder how it's reasonable to gain 25 to 35 pounds (on average) during your pregnancy when a newborn baby weighs only a fraction of that? Although it varies from woman to woman, this is how those pounds may add up:
  • 7.5 pounds - average baby's weight
  • 7 pounds - your body's extra stored protein, fat, and other nutrients
  • 4 pounds - your extra blood
  • 4 pounds - your other extra body fluids
  • 2 pounds - breast enlargement
  • 2 pounds - enlargement of your uterus
  • 2 pounds - amniotic fluid surrounding your baby
  • 1.5 pounds - the placenta
Of course, patterns of weight gain during pregnancy vary. It's normal to gain less if you start out heavier and more if you're having twins or triplets - or if you were underweight before becoming pregnant. More important than how much weight you gain is what makes up those extra pounds. When you're pregnant, what you eat and drink is the main source of nourishment for your baby. In fact, the link between what you consume and the health of your baby is much stronger than once thought. That's why doctors now say, for example, that

Do you stop and ask yourself, is this good for me? If you're pregnant, do you ask, is this healthy for my baby? Maybe you should. Eating healthy is always important. But when you're pregnant, it is extremely important to eat the right kinds of healthy foods. While expectant mothers are not really eating for two, experts say, they do have extra nutritional demands placed on them because of their babies. It's important to give the growing baby the nutrients it needs to develop. Weight gain is expected during a pregnancy. Women should let their hunger guide their food intake. If they're hungry, they should eat, as long as it's something healthy. Women experience the majority of their weight gain during the second and third trimesters. Every woman is different and every pregnant woman will experience a different amount of weight gain. Experts stress that during pregnancy is not the time to start a weight-loss diet, nor should pregnant women use dietary supplements in place of meals. Nutrients such as iron, calcium and folic acid are essential in an expectant mother's diet. These nutrients help meet the demands of the baby on the mother's body, including an increased blood volume and growth of maternal tissues. The nutrients also assist in the baby's development.

Eating well is one of the most vital contributions you can make to the health of your baby (second only to protecting her from the effects of smoking). Here's how to do it:
  • Make one third of your daily diet crisply cooked vegetables, refreshing salads, enticing fruits. Don't worry if you can't always buy fresh - frozen, canned and dried fruit and vegetables are almost as good. Aim for five portions a day. Make another third satisfying starchy carbohydrates - pasta, potatoes, rice, bread or cereals. Unlike sugary carbohydrates, starchy carbohydrates provide long-term energy and vitality. Eat an average of six servings spread throughout the day.

What You Need To Know About Mercury In Fish And Shellfish
(March 19, 2004)
AN IMPORTANT MESSAGE FOR PREGNANT WOMEN AND WOMEN OF CHILDBEARING AGE WHO MAY BECOME PREGNANT
ABOUT THE RISKS OF MERCURY IN FISH
This document also available in Spanish Seafood can be an important part of a balanced diet for pregnant women. It is a good source of high quality protein and other nutrients and is low in fat. However, some fish contain high levels of a form of mercury called methylmercury that can harm an unborn child's developing nervous system if eaten regularly. By being informed about methylmercury and knowing the kinds of fish that are safe to eat, you can prevent any harm to your unborn child and still enjoy the health benefits of eating seafood.
HOW DOES MERCURY GET INTO FISH?
Mercury occurs naturally in the environment and it can also be released into the air through industrial pollution. Mercury falls from the air and can get into surface water, accumulating in streams and oceans. Bacteria in the water cause chemical changes that transform mercury into methylmercury that can be toxic. Fish absorb methylmercury from water as they feed on aquatic organisms.
HOW CAN I AVOID LEVELS OF MERCURY THAT COULD HARM MY UNBORN CHILD?

Nutrition During Pregnancy
The importance of good nutrition during pregnancy:
According to the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), about 300 extra calories are needed daily to maintain a healthy pregnancy. These calories should come from a balanced diet of protein, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains with sweets and fats kept to a minimum. A healthy, well-balanced diet during pregnancy can also help to minimize some pregnancy symptoms such as nausea and constipation.
Nutrition is a primary factor in the health of the mother and the baby. The following daily food servings for pregnant women are recommended by the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG):
  • 9 servings of bread and whole grains 4 servings of vegetables 3 servings of meat and protein foods
These serving recommendations are for women who are of normal weight before becoming pregnant. Underweight or overweight women should discuss their nutrition needs with their physician.
Fluid intake is also an important part of healthy pregnancy nutrition. Women can take in enough fluids by drinking 6 to 8 glasses of water each day, in addition to the fluids in juices and soups. An expectant mother should talk with her physician about restricting her intake of caffeine and artificial sweeteners. All alcohol should be avoided in pregnancy.

Vegetarian Diets During Pregnancy by Reed Mangels, PhD, RD, FADA
Introduction Pregnancy is a time of increased nutritional needs, both to support the rapidly growing fetus and to allow for the changes occurring in the pregnant woman's body. Throughout pregnancy, recommended intakes of vitamins and minerals are higher than for the non-pregnant state. For example, the recommendation for folic acid is 50 percent higher (1) and the recommendation for iron is doubled (2) in pregnancy. Vegetarian and vegan diets can easily meet these nutrient needs (3). Weight Gain It is important that all pregnant women have adequate weight gain. Weight gain recommendations vary depending on the prepregnancy weight and needs of the woman, therefore energy needs vary as well. A general trend is to have little weight gain (less than 5 pounds) for the first 12 weeks. Then, in the second and third trimesters, a weight gain of a pound or two a week is suggested. Current weight gain recommendations (4) are applicable to vegetarians. The recommendations for weight gain are listed in Table 1. Table 1. Recommended Weight Gain During Pregnancy

PREGNANCY Nutrition is important for any teen, but the pregnant vegetarian teen has special needs. A Vegetarian Pregnancy By Misty Strebeck, age 20 "I found out I was pregnant in Oct. 1998, the day before Halloween. I was 16 years old and a vegan for almost 7 months. At the time, I was pretty healthy; I wasn't taking any extra vitamins and I was of average weight..." My Veg Teen Pregnancy By Danica Stefanko, 19 "Hi my name is Danica and I'm a vegetarian." Some people make such a big deal about vegetarianism that I feel I should say that every time I meet someone. I, honestly, don't see the big deal. Now how about this one: "Hi I'm pregnant and a vegetarian." Family and Consumer Sciences Pregnancy is the most nutritionally demanding time of a woman's life. Your body needs enough nutrients every day to support the growth of your baby. All the nourishment this developing baby needs comes from you, either through the foods you eat or the supplements you take. Pregnant women need more calories and essential nutrients than other women. If the nourishment needed for baby's developing tissues and organs is inadequate when your baby needs it, he/she may not develop normally. It is important to eat the right foods every day since tissues and organs develop during certain weeks of your pregnancy. Your own health depends on your diet, too. While your body is supplying the nutrients your baby needs, your body still needs the same nutrients as before you were pregnant. The Food Guide Pyramid for Pregnant Women helps you choose foods for both your needs. Increase your intake of nutrient-dense foods. Nutrient-dense foods contain more nutrients than calories. By following the Food Guide Pyramid for Pregnant Women you can get the nourishment you need.
