Introduction
Pregnancy is a time of increased nutritional needs, both to support the rapidly growing fetus and to allow for the changes occurring in the pregnant woman's body. Throughout pregnancy, recommended intakes of many vitamins and minerals are higher than those recommended prior to pregnancy. For example, the recommendation for folic acid is more than doubled and the recommendation for calcium is 50% higher during pregnancy. [1] How can you meet these increased needs by following a vegan diet? A series of studies [2,3] at the Farm, a community where vegan diets are part of a socially responsible lifestyle, have shown that vegans can have healthy pregnancies and that infants and children can safely follow a vegan diet. This article will review nutritional needs during pregnancy and will describe how a vegan diet can be adapted to meet the higher nutritional needs associated with pregnancy. Although recommendations for many vitamins and minerals are higher in pregnancy, the increase in energy (calorie) requirements is relatively small. For this reason, some care and thought are needed by

Did you know?
Healthy eating plays a very important role in a healthy pregnancy. You need to eat foods from a variety of sources to ensure your baby gets all the vitamins, minerals and nutrients he needs for healthy growth and development.
What should I eat?
Canada's Food Guide to Healthy Eating recommends "following the rainbow" to healthy eating.
  • Eat 3 to 4 servings of milk products (blue in Canada's Food Guide) each day. Choose lower-fat milk products more often. They provide the high quality protein, calcium and Vitamin D you need but they contain less fat and calories. A serving is 250 mL (1 cup) of milk, 175 g (3/4 cup) of yogurt or 50 grams of cheese (the size of 6 dice). Eat 2 to 3 servings of meat and alternatives (red in Canada's Food Guide) each day. Choose leaner meats, poultry and fish, as well as dried peas, beans and lentils more often. A serving is 1 to 2 eggs, 30 mL (2 tbsp) of peanut butter, 100 g (1/3 cup) of tofu, and 50 to 100 grams of fish, poultry or meat (the size of a deck of cards).
Can I eat more, now that I'm expecting?

Alternate Names : Nutrition and Pregnancy Pregnancy is the time period between the conception and the birth of a child. Measured from the start of a woman's last normal menstrual period, called LMP, it usually lasts about 40 weeks, or roughly 9 calendar months. The process of childbearing, though, can be said to last longer. Often, it is divided into three stages:
  • preconception, which is the months before pregnancy prenatal, which is the months during pregnancy postpartum, which is the months after the birth
  • During preconception and pregnancy, a woman's diet can be a key factor in her health and in the health and growth of the fetus. After her baby's birth, what she eats affects her breast milk if she is breastfeeding . It has a strong impact on her health and energy levels, too.

    ABSTRACT
    POSITION STATEMENT
It is the position of the American Dietetic Association that women of childbearing potential should maintain good nutritional status through a lifestyle that optimizes maternal health and reduces the risk of birth defects, suboptimal fetal development, and chronic health problems in their children. The key components of a healthpromoting lifestyle during pregnancy include appropriate weight gain; consumption of a variety of foods in accordance with the Food Guide Pyramid; appropriate and timely vitamin and mineral supplementation; avoidance of alcohol, tobacco, and other harmful substances; and safe food-handling. In particular for medical nutrition therapy, pregnant women with inappropriate weight gain, hyperemesis, poor dietary patterns, phenylketonuria (PKU), certain chronic health problems, or a history of substance abuse should be referred to a qualified dietetics professional.
    ENVIRONMENT DICTATING NEED FOR POSITION
Inadequate intake of micronutrients is also associated with increased risk of poor pregnancy outcomes. Folate, required for deoxyribonucleic acid synthesis and cell division, plays a critical role in fetal development. Periconceptional use of vitamin-mineral supplements containing folic acid reduces occurrence and reoccurrence of neural tube and other defects (7,8,9). Low folate status also increases risk of preterm delivery, low birth weight, and fetal growth restriction (10). Maternal iron deficiency anemia is associated with risk of preterm delivery and subsequent low birth weight and may contribute to low iron status in the infant (11,12).

    Planning a Healthy Pregnancy
Research has shown that the more prepared a parent is for the arrival of a baby, the less stress they will face during the first few months of their arrival. The earlier a woman plans for her pregnancy, the more time she will have to prepare and seek the medical attention to ensure a healthy pregnancy.
Nutrition plays a big part in the success of a pregnancy. Women that are pregnant need more nutrients in their bodies and it is important to know which ones. Along with nutrition there are different activity needs, birthing choices, budgeting necessities, and baby proofing that needs to be done.
Through this web-quest students will gain knowledge in an area and present the information they have learned to the class in through their power point presentation. Hereís Your Task
In groups of 2-3 prepare a PowerPoint presentation on one of the following areas surrounding a healthy pregnancy: Group 1 Signs of Pregnancy, normal as well as warnings Group 2 The importance of early and regular medical care during pregnancy.

Vegan Nutrition in Pregnancy and Childhood
by Reed Mangels, Ph.D., R.D. and
    Katie Kavanagh-Prochaska, Dietetic Intern
Summary: A well-planned vegan diet can easily be used during pregnancy, breastfeeding, and childhood. Basic Needs in Pregnancy During pregnancy, the body requires extra calories, protein, vitamins, and minerals in order to support the baby's growth and to allow for changes in the mother's body. Important considerations in pregnancy include calories, protein, vitamin B12, iron, calcium, vitamin D, zinc, and folate. Calories
Pregnant women, in general, need an additional 300 calories per day, beginning in the second trimester. The extra calories allow for the mother's body to change and the baby to grow. Your calorie needs may vary according to your pre-pregnancy weight and the amount of weight which you need to gain. Adding nutritious snacks to your daily routine is one way to get extra calories. A sample meal plan for vegan pregnancy, which includes three snack ideas, can be found inside this brochure. Protein
Protein recommendations in pregnancy call for an additional 10 grams (for 25-50 year olds) or 14 grams (for 19-24 year olds) of protein. Some examples of protein-rich foods are plain, enriched soymilk; tofu; tempeh; cooked beans; and nuts and nut butters. Eating a wide variety of nutritious foods will help pregnant women get the additional protein they need.

Tip Taking folic acid before you get pregnant can prevent birth defects. About 2,500 children are born with neural tube defects each year. If all women took folic acid before conception and during early pregnancy, the number of neural tube defects could drop as much as 70 percent. Folic Acid and Pregnancy What is folic acid, and why is it important? Folic acid, also called folate, is a naturally occurring B vitamin. It is found in fruits, vegetables, fortified cereals and enriched bread products. Folic acid helps your body produce red blood cells and the chemical components of the brain and spinal cord. Folic acid works during the first few weeks of pregnancy when the neural tube is developing into the brain and spinal cord. This vitamin is most important to your baby right after conception, when you may not know you are pregnant. Without enough folic acid, your baby could suffer serious neural tube birth defects. About 2500 babies are born with these defects each year. A common one is spina bifida, which leaves some children unable to walk. Spina bifida can also lead to anencephaly, causing the baby's death from the underdevelopment of the skull and brain.
