Nutrition for the two of you: Eating right before, during, and after pregnancy
May 17, 1999 Web posted at: 11:36 AM EDT (1536 GMT) By Elizabeth Somer, M.A., R.D. A PREGNANT WOMAN SHOULD INCLUDE IN HER DAILY DIET AT LEAST:
  • Five servings of fresh fruits and vegetables (including at least one serving of a dark orange vegetable, two servings of dark green leafy vegetables, and one serving of citrus fruit) Six servings of enriched, whole-grain breads and cereals. Three servings of nonfat or low-fat milk or milk products Two to three servings of extra-lean meats, chicken without the skin, fish, or cooked dried beans and peas

Prenatal education for mothers pregnant with twins and triplets. Topics include nutrition, preterm labor, delivery and other high risk pregnancy topics.
    http://expectingmultiples.com/
    Multiple Birth Resources LLC
Multiple birth pregnancies have been rapidly increasing due to advancements in infertility treatments. Twin births over the past decade have risen by 33 percent, while higher order multiples have increased 178 percent. More than half of all multiple births are low birthweight. Over 50% of twins and upwards of 90% of triplets are born premature in the U.S. In contrast, approximately 11% of all singleton births are premature. Twin births are 7 times more likely to result in death during the first month of life, and on average, require longer hospital stays resulting from preterm complications. Proper childbirth education and prenatal care during your high risk pregnancy will assist you in achieving your goal of delivery of healthy, term multiples.
The only program of its kind in Colorado, the resources offered to expectant parents by Multiple Birth Resources LLC ("MBR") focuses on increasing birth weights and decreasing the preterm delivery rates for multiple births. Statistics for those parents attending MBR's classes show a dramatic improvement in gestation and birth weights as shown below. With hospital costs averaging $4,000 per day for twins in a neonatal intensive care nursery, proper prenatal education and preventive care offered through MBR's class instruction and video series can save patients, insurance companies and hospitals considerable costs.
Leslie A. Montgomery, R.N., a registered labor and delivery nurse and mother of two sets of twins, began teaching in 1994. MBR also publishes and provides up-to-date articles and other valuable resources on a variety of topics relating to all aspects of the multiple pregnancy and parenting to expectant parents, hospital educators, OB/GYNs, insurance companies and others.

I will state this as clearly as I can: This is a guideline for the EASIEST way to get all the nutrients and calories you need in pregnancy, especially a high level of protein and the calories you need to use the protein as building blocks rather than for fuel. There are other ways to do it if you are vegetarian, vegan, eat low fat, or don't like/tolerate a particular food. Please see the books referenced at the end for more details on substituting foods! Every Day, you should have: (examples given are one serving) (Remember, each category is separate and you cannot fill two with one food - if you eat 3 oz of cheese, it can be a protein or a milk, but not both!) 1 Quart of Milk (4 8-oz Glasses) - in any form: milk, cheese, yogurt, even ice cream (although try to watch the fat!) 2 Eggs (cooked any way, in french toast, added to other foods...)

BellaOnline's Nutrition Editor Pictures of Pregnancy Stages They say that one picture is worth a thousand words. Wouldn't you agree? After all, pregnancy, labor and birth might as well be an exciting, positive, joyful adventure for you, your partner and your baby. Having a visual image of the growth of the baby inside your body during pregnancy is like having a treasure map. It can help guide you and make your experience even more fun and rewarding.
These drawings show your own and your baby's growth and development over the nine months of pregnancy. The weight and measurements are based on averages. So, since no two pregnancies are ever the same, don't be surprised by any differences in your own pregnancy experience. Having an idea of what your baby looks like during each stage of development can help you to have positive encouraging thoughts and feelings. This is very important to the health of your child . And just to add some extra color and fun - while you're waiting for your little bundle of joy - in each of the nine stages the baby size is compared to the size of a fruit or vegetable. Hopefully, this will add to the delicious joy of your own pregnancy adventure.

    http://www.tnpc.com/parentalk/pregnancy/preg7.html
    Nutrition, Vitamins and Pregnancy
    by Peter Weiss, M.D.
Most women when they are pregnant will be given a prenatal multi-vitamin, which includes all the daily vitamins that they will need, plus folic acid. Folic acid is very important in pregnancy. Folic acid is required in your increased maternal metabolism, and red blood cell formation. All the folic acid that is needed should be found in your prenatal multi-vitamin. Vitamins are very important to the developing fetus. However, you should be aware that too much can cause grave problems in the baby, so consult your physician before taking ANY vitamins or supplements. Let's run through the basic vitamins and their importance:
    • Vitamin A - Important in the fetus in bone growth and for tooth structure.
Vitamin D - Helps normal bone and tooth development by helping absorption of calcium. Vitamin E - Helps with the maintenance of your blood. Vitamin C - Needed for maintaining healthy tissue and blood vessels. Vitamin B Complex - Varies, but helps in forming red blood cells, also the nervous system.

    Pregnancy Nutrition
One of the single most important things that you can do for your baby is to be sure you are eating the right mix of the right foods. But with all the information available to us today, how can you tell the difference between the fad and the fact? The basics of sound nutrition are the basics of pregnancy nutrition. You must eat a variety of foods, and you must eat enough of them to support the work your body is doing. While pregnant your body uses about 200 extra calories a day, so you don't need to "eat for two," but you do need to be sure the food you are eating is the best quality available to you. Many women are concerned about the weight they gain during pregnancy, but if you are eating a healthy balanced diet, and not overeating, the weight will not be a concern. After your baby is born and the demands on your body have lessened (perhaps after you are done breastfeeding) your body will shed the extra fat it stores to keep you and your baby healthy. If you find yourself tired, irritable, sluggish and dim witted during this pregnancy, it may just be that you're not quite eating what you need. Check out the information available on this site, and on others linked to it to see if you should be making any changes.

    Nutrition During Pregnancy
Hi Pregnant Mom! Would you like some Nutrition During Pregnancy advice? My name is Michelle. In April 2002, I was newly pregnant and starting to become anxious about my changing body, both inside and out.
Michelle Biton, Author of "Pregnancy without Pounds" I had SO MANY Questions
    Nutrition During Pregnancy
So, being the information hound that I am, I went looking for all the answers. Sadly, I came up short. Most of the fashionable pregnancy books were either too playful (not giving me enough practical advice) or too medical (making me more anxious and nervous). The general feeling out there that I realized is that pregnancy is a great effort and that pregnant women have big weight gains, wear very large shirts, feel rather uncomfortable and have little energy. Not me! I was determined have LOTS of energy and to LOOK great while being pregnant. I planned to be FREE of aches and pains, dress sexy and to lose weight with ease after I delivered my baby. And I did it. Most New Moms are Full of Regret
Most pregnant women use pregnancy as an excuse to eat the house. They let themselves go, indulge in their cravings, and stop exercising.

Save a personal copy of this article and quickly find it again with Furl.net. It's free! Save it. Iron deficiency (ID) is one of the risks to pregnant women. Causes of ID include extra iron required by the growing fetus and the placenta and the increased maternal red cell mass. The potential risks of iron deficiency anemia (IDA) to pregnant women are increased fatigue and decreased work performance; cardiovascular stress due to inadequate hemoglobin and low oxygen saturation; impaired resistance to infection; and poor tolerance to heavy blood loss and surgical interventions at delivery. Currently, in countries such as Australia, New Zealand, the UK, and Canada, iron supplementation is not recommended during pregnancy. However, in other nations, such as in the United States and France, iron supplementation during pregnancy is standard practice. The evidence for either a beneficial or harmful effect of iron supplementation on pregnancy outcomes is inconclusive.
