Pregnancy and Nutrition:
Spina Bifida and Folic Acid
Why is folic acid important?
Women who take folic acid supplements and eat a diet rich in folate before becoming pregnant and during the first few weeks of pregnancy have a smaller chance of having a baby born with a Neural Tube Defect or NTD. NTDs are a group of serious birth defects. Spina bifida is the most common NTD. If you are a women of child-bearing age (between 14-50 years), to help prevent NTDs you should take 0.4 milligrams (400 micrograms) of folic acid every day from a vitamin supplement. You should also eat a healthy diet that includes good sources of folate every day. The amount of folic acid in supplements may range from 0.4 to 1.0 milligram, but you should not take more than 1.0 milligram without consulting with your health professional/family doctor. Although folic acid helps to prevent NTDs when taken before and for the first three months of a pregnancy, you should continue to take folic acid supplements and to eat foods high in folate throughout your pregnancy. Folic acid is important for your health and for the unborn baby's overall growth and development.

Sharma, Rekha Child bearing imposes both physical and mental strain on the body and mind and it is important that the would be mother leads a healthy life during pregnancy. One of the major factor that promotes health and well being of both mother and baby in the womb is a wholesome nourishing diet. Successful pregnancy requires continuous adjustments in maternal body composition, metabolism and the functions of various physiological systems. A nutritional diet is required for the maternal well-being and a healthy baby. Nutritional needs of pregnancy can he divided into three phases of 13 weeks duration each. The approach to estimating nutrient needs emphasises the principle that nutrient intakes should be consistent with long-term health and in energy terms allow for the maintenance of economically necessary, socially desirable physical activity. (FAO/W'HO/UNU/1985) The amount and composition of the weight gained during pregnancy are major determinants of the extra energy and nutrient needs. The rate of weight gain is not uniform throughout pregnancy. Approximately 5% of the total weight is usually gained in the first quarter, and the remainder is gained fairly evenly through the rest of the pregnancy, not exceeding a total of 10- 12kg during the entire pregnancy Energy Cost of Pregnancy About 60% of the energy cost of pregnancy is accounted for by the energy content of the fetus and increments in the maternal tissue, and the remaining 40% is due to a higher basal metabolic rate (BMR) and the extra cost of a normal and heavier body. There is also a variation in BMR depending upon the environment.

Deutsche Version USRMA Health Search Wizard Pregnancy and Nutrition Of Special concern for Mothers-to-be Although everyone needs the same nutrients, the amounts we need change as our lives change. This message is for all women of childbearing age, mothers-to-be, and growing families everywhere. We will discuss perhaps the three most important phases of nutrient requirements that determine an individuals lifelong health and nutrition status; Pregnancy, lactation, and infancy. We normally think of our nutrition as personal, affecting only our own lives. This isn't always the case though. The woman who is pregnant, or who may be, must understand that her nutrition today will be critical to the health of her child throughout life. The nutrition demands of pregnancy are extraordinary because the growth of a whole new person requires all the minerals and other nutrients, and most in larger amounts. Before Pregnancy Before becoming pregnant, a woman must establish nutrition habits that will optimally nourish both the growing fetus, and herself. She must be well nourished at the outset because in early pregnancy the embryo undergoes rapid and significant developmental changes that depend on her prior balance of minerals, vitamins, and other nutrition concerns. Fathers-to-be are also encouraged to consider their nutrition status. Some evidence suggests that men who consume too few vitamins and minerals, or who drink too much alcohol before conception may damage their sperm's genetic material. This damage can cause birth defects in future children.

Pregnancy has recently been identified as a time of increased risk for the development of overweight and obesity in women of childbearing age. In addition, to the public health concern regarding excessive weight retention after pregnancy. women often express concern about returning to their prepregnancy weight and want information on postpartum exercise, diet, and nutrition. It is known that exercise and food intake are important contributors to postpartum weight change. However, there is little research on the relationship between psychosocial variables and exercise- and diet-related behaviors in the postpartum period. Some researchers from the University of Missouri examined the relationships between the psychosocial characteristics and exercise- and food-related behaviors at 1 year postpartum in healthy adult women.

PREGNANCY AND NUTRITION Nutrition During Pregnancy During pregnancy, good nutrition plays a key role in maintaining your health and energy and the health and development of your baby Getting adequate calcium is important for the growth and development of your baby. During the last trimester of pregnancy, the fetus accumulates 330 mg/day of calcium. In order to meet the needs of both you and your baby, you need to consume a minimum of 3 servings of calcium a day. If you are not consuming an adequate amount of calcium, your baby will absorb the calcium it needs from your reserves in your bones and teeth. Making your Calories Count
Pregnant and breastfeeding women only need to eat 300 extra calories during pregnancy and 500 extra calories while breastfeeding. Therefore, it is more important than ever to make all your calories count. So remember your 3 servings of dairy a day when planning meals and snacks. View our

Pregnancy and High Blood Pressure
Calcium can help regulate blood pressure during pregnancy in some women and may help reduce the risk of both pregnancy-induced high blood pressure and preclampsia. Studies show that increasing calcium to 1200-1500 mg/day reduces the risk of pregnancy induced hypertension by 70% and preclampsia by 62%.

http://www.gentlebirth.org/nwnm.org/Pregnancy_and_Nutrition.htm
Pregnancy and Nutrition (text quoted below from
Joseph Keon's Whole Health
Pregnancy and the Revised American Diet "The diet of a pregnant mother has always been highly controversial. Conventional wisdom built upon nutritional myths has led mothers and many well-meaning physicians to believe that pregnancy requires lots of meat and dairy products to support the development of the child. Fortunately, this is only a myth. There is no more reason for a pregnant woman to consume animal products than for a woman who is not pregnant. With the exception of vitamin B12, a mother-to-be can derive all the necessary nutrients to support both herself and her baby by eating plenty of whole grains, legumes, vegetables, fruits, nuts, and seeds. Pregnant women have been doing this for thousands of years, giving birth to happy and healthy infants." . . . (156)
Pregnancy and Calories "Pregnancy does bring an increased appetite (usually around the second trimester), as the mother is eating for both herself and her developing child. Usually, this entails an increase of about 300 calories a day. Pregnancy also increases the need for the essential fats (linoleic acid) and iron. The essential fats are abundant in pumpkin seeds, broccoli, spinach, soy, and legumes, and flaxseed oil, as well as many nuts and their butters, which are also highly caloric. Increasing the intake of these foods will suffice. "In addition to all the unhealthy side effects of consuming high-fat animal foods, pregnant mothers on the Standard American Diet tend to gain large amounts of weight because animal products are so high in fat. The excess weight they gain not only makes pregnancy and delivery more difficult, but may also be a risk factor for both diabetes and high blood pressure. After pregnancy, the mother must contend with losing the excess weight she has gained. Vegetarian mothers, however, are much less likely to gain such significant amounts of weight during their pregnancies.

Nutrition for Pregnant Women Nutrition is an essential component of prenatal care. A healthy diet contributes to a successful pregnancy by reducing complications and promoting adequate fetal growth and development. The purpose of this guide is to provide general guidelines for maintaining good nutrition during pregnancy. For information on modifications due to specific conditions, consult your health care provider or a qualified nutrition specialist. Figure 1. Daily Diet Guidelines for Pregnancy The following are helpful tips to promote healthy eating.
  • Eat enough food to gain weight at the rate recommended by your health care provider. Continue to eat a balanced diet even if you think you are gaining weight too quickly. Include a variety of foods as outlined in the food pyramid. Adequate amounts of vitamins, minerals and other nutrients required during pregnancy are easier to obtain when the diet is varied. Limit nutrient deficient, high kilocalorie foods. Substitute foods which have higher nutritive value. For example:

Since half of all pregnancies in the U.S. are not planned, many women may not find out that they are pregnant until well after the ideal time to prevent these birth defects. As a result, the Public Health Service recommends that all women of childbearing age consume 0.4 mg of folic acid each day to prevent spina bifida and anencephaly.

Nutrition in Pregnancy
Here is a small beginning on nutrition: number one lesson -which I always hated to hear, by the way- is that the health of your body BEFORE getting pregnant makes a difference. See why I hated this? Already I felt like I was coming from behind. You find out you're pregnant and you want to give your baby the best and healthiest circumstances and find out you should have started thinking about your diet, etc. years before. SO! since we can't start any earlier,we start now. And keep in mind for future births that exercise, calcium intake, vitamins (esp. Folic acid and other B's),and adequate protein foods are important to your body which is building itself daily. The health you have now is the result of your lifestyle months and years before. Finally, the health establishment has caught up on one supplementation fact: Folic acid intake for the general population increases the amounts that women start with( it is a water-soluble vitamin and not stored in the body). The importance of this is that it has been shown to reduce,to almost nil, certain serious birth defects such as spina bifida.
