Characteristic (Functional) Groups
R-3.2.1 Prefixes and suffixes
R-3.2.1.1 The presence of a characteristic group can be denoted by a prefix or suffix attached to the parent name (with elision of terminal "e", if present). Such prefixes and suffixes are illustrated in Table 5 . Additional details for the use of functional prefixes and suffixes are found in Section R-4 (Name Construction). R-3.2.1.2 Affixes used to denote ionic or radical centres in a parent structure, classified according to the type of formal operation by which the ion or radical may be considered to be derived (see R-5.8 ), are given in Table 6 . Suffixes are added to the name of a parent hydride in the customary manner or serve as endings to names of characteristic groups. When needed, ionic centres are expressed as prefixes that terminate with endings given in the column labelled "Substituent prefix ending", for example, ethan-1-ylium-1-yl, pyridinio, sulfonato, and propan-2-id-2-yl; for radical centres, the prefix "ylo-" is added in front of the name of the substituent prefix, for example, 2-yloethyl. In replacement nomenclature, the replacement prefixes are modified to end as shown in the column labelled "Replacement prefix endings", for example, azonia and boranylia. Two or more such operations are indicated by an appropriate multiplying affix, for example, "-diide", and "-tris(ylium)". Additional details for the use of ionic prefixes and suffixes are given in Section

Guide to Name Construction
R-4.1 General Principles
The formation of the systematic name for an organic compound involves several steps, to be taken as far as they are applicable in the following order: (a) from the nature of the compound, determine the type(s) of nomenclature operations (see Section R-1.2 ) to be used. Although the so-called "substitutive nomenclature" is emphasized in these recommendations, other kinds of names, for example, functional class names, are often given, usually as alternatives; (b) determine the kind of characteristic group to be cited as suffix (if any) or as a functional class name. Only one kind of characteristic group (known as the principal group) can be cited as suffix or functional class name . All substituents not so cited must be specified as prefixes; (c) determine the parent hydride, including any appropriate nondetachable prefixes [detailed rules for choice of the principal chain, the preferred ring or ring system, the functional parent compound, or conjunctive components are described in the 1979 edition of the IUPAC Nomenclature of Organic Chemistry (see, for example

Week 6 (February 11): Word-formation (prefixes and suffixes)
Your encyclopedia articles had been due on Friday 14th, though I've just extended this deadline until Monday 17th (6pm).
Pick one of the following prefixes or suffixes, and explain how it has been most “productive” in Early Modern and/or Present-Day English. The OED has entries for affixes, and I’ve also put Marchand’s Categories and types of present-day English wordformation on reserve (PE 1175 M3). You might consider:
  • how the affix came in (if it wasn't already native)
  • what part(s) of speech it attaches itself to, and what part(s) of speech it forms.
  • whether it attaches to bases of native and/or of Romance (Latin, French) origin.
  • whether it likes to combine with other affixes (e.g., un happi ness
  • whether it competes with other affixes (e.g. -ness vs -ity
  • whether the words it forms come from specific registers of English (e.g., science)
  • whether the words it forms have particular connotations (would you want to be an - ist ) or an -eer
Please email me before 5 pm on Friday January 24th with your top three choices (i.e., “ist”, “ness”, and “y”). I’ll email the class by Sunday afternoon when your names are up on the web pages.

Prefixes and Suffixes
Posted by Ramie
I have a stack of prefix cards and suffix cards on the table with a group of 3 or four students. One card is turned over and they start the timer for 2 minutes. They have to write every word they can think of with that prefix or suffix. After 2 minutes each person shares the words they have created. For every word that a student has that someone else has not thought of they receive one point. Of course, if the word does not make sense or if the prefixes and suffixes are not used correctly the word does not count. My students love to play this game in centers.

What are prefixes and suffixes?: Page 1
A prefix is a letter or letters that are added on to the start of a word to change its meaning or purpose in some way eg
undo = un (prefix) + do; decompose = de + compose A suffix is a letter or letters that are added to the end of a word, usually to change its use or purpose in some way eg
Glor(y) + fy = glorify; combin(e) + ation = combination Some words have both a prefix and a suffix eg re + pay + ment = repayment
Guess the meanings of the following prefixes and suffixes and then check your guesses. If you learn these meanings, they will help you understand other words you will meet in the future. They all come from Latin or Greek.

It is also frustrating to read a newspaper or homework assignment and run across words whose meanings elude us. Language, after all, is power. Using Every Resource
Most bookstores carry books on building a more powerful vocabulary, some of them with zany names such as Thirty Days to a More Powerful Vocabulary Newspapers often carry brief daily articles that explore the meanings of words and phrases. These articles often emphasize peculiar words that won't find themselves into your working vocabulary, but they can still be fun. Often you'll find that learning one new word leads to other new words, little constellations of meaning that keep your brain cells active and hungry for more. Make reading these articles one of your daily habits, an addiction, even. Play dictionary games with your family in which someone uses the dictionary to find a neat word and writes down the real definition and everyone else writes down a fake (and funny) definition. See how many people you can fool with your fake definitions.
