An excellent spelling and vocabulary resource for older junior and secondary children, teaching them to spell a wide range of words from common prefixes and root syllables. Like the other "Spring" games, there is a fast-moving, quick-thinking competitive option (ideal for groups or pairs of students of roughly the same ability), or turn taking and point counting games which are better suited to 1-1 teaching or groups where one or more students would be much faster or slower than the rest. 2-6 can play. Wall-of-Words Construction Site Students will love putting on their hard hats and literally building words at this interactive learning center. To prepare, write out a variety of prefixes and suffixes on square-shaped blocks, and base or root words on rectangular blocks. Use masking-tape labels if needed. Try to include words that will not require spelling changes when suffixes are added (such as stand, feel, enjoy, appear, un-enjoy-able or dis-appear-ance .) Ask students to continue to add layers to the wall, using rows of two bricks ( feel-ing ), three bricks ( under-stand-able ), or even four bricks ( mis-under-stand-ing; un-feel-ing-ly ). Have students build a new wall each day, or challenge them to keep adding to the wall of words until it topples!
World-Builder Flip Books Invite students to create new words with these special flip books. For each book, stack six strips of paper horizontally, staple across the top, and cut into three sections as shown. On the board, write prefixes ( dis-, re-, un-, mis-

What are prefixes and suffixes? Prefixes and suffixes are word elements that attach to root words to give them new or added meaning. A prefix attaches to the front of a word, and a suffix attaches to the end. Why learn Korean prefixes and suffixes? The Korean language has many prefixes and suffixes, and many Korean words share the same prefixes and suffixes. You can build your Korean vocabulary faster and have a better understanding of a word's meaning if you know the meaning of common prefixes and suffixes. Learning one prefix or suffix may be the key to learning ten, twenty, or more new words. For example, if one knows that the prefix ,?-, means "late," then he or she would have a key to understanding the following words: Home Gallery Contact Us Join ... Here are a few examples:
  • Have students combine different prefixes and suffixes to create new words associated with deep-sea expeditions. Have them illustrate their new concepts, lifeforms, and/or inventions that result.
    • Examples:
      • Hydropod: "a water-footed animal"
      • Unisub: "a research vessel for only one person"
      • Ancephlafish: "a fish with no head"
      • Subaquabicam: "an underwater camera with two apertures"
    • Students can make a glossary of these new terms, share them orally, and ask other students to figure out their meaning, or they can share their illustrations and ask classmates to label the concept, lifeform, or invention based on their understanding of the prefixes and suffixes.
  • Have students find words in the In Search of Giant Squid web page or in other oceanographic material that uses one or more of these word parts. Ask students to predict the meaning of the word based on the prefix or suffix, as well as sentence context clues, then have them look up the meaning in a dictionary and state the extent to which their prediction was correct.
