Art images on the Web represent one of the first and last frontiers in terms of pools of knowledge: millions of historic art images served and more to come. Guides to art resources are legion. Almost every university and college that teaches art or art history seems to devote some portion of its faculty or departmental Web site to art resources on the Web. Academic libraries, especially those connected to art galleries or art museums, often maintain subject guides to art and art history. Projects initiated by art librarian members of the

OTHER SITES luckycouple.com zenguide.com gibranarchive.com Welcome to the 3rd release of jwwaterhouse.com. The site is now nearing the end of its 5th year and is ever more the favorite site for many John William Waterhouse fans out there! The new release revised the layout and look slightly, but the main goal was to add much more features to the site. Please be patient as some of the features will not yet be available until the next few months. Waterhouse's work is perhaps the best of the Pre-Raphaelites (although really a Neoclassic). His combination of mythology, poetry and mystique femme fatale is absolutely outstanding and soulfully touching. Here, I pay tribute to the man, my obsession, the master, with the presentation of over 100 paintings through out 5 decades of his work.

Ruskin was born in London on 8 February 1819 and died at his Lake District house Brantwood, Coniston on 20 January 1900. He was the only child of a prosperous sherry merchant who was able to provide him with an aristocratic education at Oxford. His mother instilled in him her strict evangelical Protestant views. Gifted both as writer and artist, he rose to fame with the publication of the first volume of Modern Painters in 1843. In 1848, he married Effie Gray but the marriage was annulled in 1854. Effie had fallen in love with the young painter Millais, a Pre-Raphaelite, whose work Ruskin had praised.

    • Dante Gabriel Rossetti was a pupil of Ford Madox Brown and together with Holman Hunt and Millais played a leading role in the formation of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. In this painting, begun in 1850 but not completed until 1872, Jane Morris, the wife of William Morris, was Rossetti's model.

    • Although Lord Leighton of Stretton is more properly considered a neo-classicist and, as Rossetti said of him, "was wholly opposed to their (i.e., the Pre-Raphaelite credo of art) views", this painting reflects a strong Pre-Raphaelite influence, both in form, content, and execution, despite Leighton's imaginary posthumous denunciations to the contrary. "Flaming June" (46x46 inches) now resides in the Museo de Arte de Ponce, Puerto Rico. First exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1895. There is a crayon study for this painting at Leighton House; at least one other is known. The design of the picture was first intended as a decorative bas-relief for the marble bath on which the figure in his "Summer Studies" reclines. Leighton was suffering from his last illness while painting this picture, and he died in the following year. "Flaming June" was on loan to the Ashmolean between 1915 and 1930, but apparently disappeared. It was not publicly known again until its rediscovery in 1963.

The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, or PRB, was formed in 1848 as a group of young painters in Britain who wished to experiment with the Horatian principle of ut pictura poesis , which means (in a great oversimplification) that painting and poetry are merely two different ways of expressing the same ideas. The Brotherhood wished to "correct" the false principles on which the arts had been based since the time of Raphaelthey thought that beauty had supplanted truth in art, and that a return to the principles of truth and usefulness would create better art. With these ideas in mind, they began to paint and to compose poetry, some with more success in one area than in the other. Dante Gabriel Rossetti continued to paint and versify throughout his career, while others in the PRB soon found that their talents lay primarily in painting or in poetry, but not both. More information about the movement is also available. Critical Opinion in the 19th Century The criticism garnered by the PRB was often derogatory, aiming to ridicule their "backward" aims in painting technique, their supposed Roman Catholic leanings, or the triteness of their poems. There is an extensive canon of the writings of the Pre-Raphaelites themselves, and one may find many examples of works

    97. Skolsteren

Goethe's theory of colours and the PreRaphaelites
    STEVEN KOLSTEREN
Goethe's Theory of Colours and the Pre-Raphaelites Goethe based his Farbenlehre (1810) on the polarity of black and white. Looking through a vagueness or prism at black or white, he saw two basic colours: blue and yellow. Blue can be intensified to purple, yellow to orange-red. Red and purple together give magenta- the strong side- and yellow and blue together give green -the weak side-. Thus, he constructed a colour circle. Moreover, he gave advice to artists to use either characteristic combinations, harmonic combinations or use complementary colours. In 19th century British art, painters were interested in colour theories. J. M. W. Turner, for example, used Goethe's colour theory which was translated into English in 1840 by C. L. Eastlake, President of the Royal Academy of Arts. However, no-one has ever researched its influence on the Pre-Raphaelite painters and their bright, detailed colours. details of paintings by D.G.Rossetti, W.Holman Hunt, Arthur Hughes and Thomas Seddon
Goethe's Theory of Colours and the Pre-Raphaelites is a book-length, unpublished study of the colour theories in 19th century Victorian England and the colours of the Pre-Raphaelite painters in the years 1848-1860. In their use of complementary contrasting colours, they were precursors to the Impressionists.
