Camille Paglia On Pre-Raphaelite Art
"The Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, founded in 1848, lasted only five years, but its style was absorbed by late nineteenth-century art and design across the continent. Inspired by Ruskin, the Pre-Raphaelists sought to recover medieval simplicity and purity lost in the pagan luxery of High Renaissance art, typified, they oddly felt, by Raphael. Unlike their Decadent descendants, they professed collective social values. The only member of the Brotherhood whom I identify as already Decadent is Rossetti, whose Italian blood would out. But in all Pre-Raphaelite painting there is an unsettling tension between form and moral content.
Pre-Raphaelite painting begins with Keatsian ardor for the minutiae of organic nature. But instead of High Romance energy or dynamic process, we get Late Romantic stasis. Pre-Raphaelite art, like Mannerism, disturbingly avoids pictoral focus. Our eye is not automatically guided to the human figures but is forced to wander over the microscopic detail. Color is unshaded and applied in separate cells, as in Byzantine mosaic or Gautier's gorgeous color units. Flowers and blades of grass are brilliantly lapidary, the paint surface so richly worked that there is only a single step from Pre-Raphaelite naturism to Gustave Moreau's Decadent jewelled artifice. Everything in Pre-Raphaelite painting is seen too clearly . The eye is invited but coerced. Part triumphs over whole, exerting an uncomfortable pressure on the viewer. Landscape has

The Pre-Raphaelites (or the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood, 1848-c.1853) were a group of young Victorian artists who briefly banded together against the dark, moribund art promoted by the English Royal Academy, then disbanded to develop highly individual artistic careers. The three founding painters (who became the most famous) were art students age 18 to 20; they derived their name from their desire to return to the simplicity and sincerity of painting before Raphael (considered the fountainhead of academic rules of art as promulgated by conservatives such as Sir Joshua Reynolds and the watercolor societies). But there was no resemblance between their works and the frescos of Giotto. Their professed aims were: to find serious and genuine themes to portray (this meant themes from the Bible or contemporary society); to portray nature carefully and accurately, without idealization; to portray scenes or situations objectively, without regard to academic rules of design or coloring; and to make only sincere, thoroughly good art. These aims most of the painters ignored. They painted subjects from poetry, romance, medieval history and fantasy; took sensual delight in brilliant, prismatic and irreal colors; painted decorative and stylized figures in sentimentalized poses; larded their works with arcane symbolism; and made much kitsch. For one year (1850) they published a literary magazine, The Germ.

Realism
The second half of the 19th century has been called the positivist age. It was an age of faith in all knowledge which would derive from science and scientific objective methods which could solve all human problems.
In the visual arts this spirit is most obvious in the widespread rejection of Romantic subjectivism and imagination in favor of Realism - the accurate and apparently objective description of the ordinary, observable world, a change especially evident in painting. Positivist thinking is evident in the full range of artistic developments after 1850- from the introduction of realistic elements into academic art, from the emphasis on the phenomenon of light, to the development of photography and the application of new technologies in architecture and constructions.

He died on 20 January 1900: this exhibition celebrates his life and work. But the centenary of Ruskin's death is not enough in itself to explain the widespread interest in his ideas one hundred years later. Ruskin, Turner and the Pre-Raphaelites explores not Ruskin's distance from us as a Victorian sage but his modernity and his position as someone who has something to say now. The aim is to present Ruskin as a contemporary critic. The art in the exhibition is a unique selection of many of the key works that Ruskin saw - but we wish to strip away the accretions of more than one hundred years to recover the radicalism of a man who called his first book Modern Painters Ruskin was born in London on 8 February 1819 and died at his Lake District house Brantwood, Coniston on 20 January 1900. He was the only child of a prosperous sherry merchant who was able to provide him with an aristocratic education at Oxford. His mother instilled in him her strict evangelical Protestant views. Gifted both as writer and artist, he rose to fame with the publication of the first volume of

Alfons Mucha , lithographed poster, 1898 Art Nouveau (French for "New art") is an art and design style that peaked in popularity at the turn of the 20th century . Other, more localized terms for the cluster of self-consciously radical, somewhat mannered reformist chic that formed a prelude to 20th-century Modernism , included Jugendstil in Germany, named for the snappy avant-garde periodical Jugend ('Youth') or Sezessionstil in Vienna, where forward-looking artists and designers seceded from the mainstream salon exhibitions, to exhibit on their own in more congenial surroundings. In Italy, Stile Liberty was named for the London shop that had been distributing good modern design emanating from the Arts and Crafts movement , a sign both of the Art Nouveau's commercial aspect and the 'imported' character it always retained in Italy. In Spain, the movement was centred in Barcelona and was known as modernisme in Catalan and modernismo in Spanish.

Elizabeth Prettejohn, The Art of the Pre-Raphaelites (Princeton University Press, 2000) Collecting art books, really expensive art books, is a perk of working here at Green Man . Even more than sampling more music than one might think exists, or diving into piles of novels in hopes of finding something really good, there's art books. Now, most of us will buy a CD or two from time to time on spec, a novel for the sake of seeing if it works for us, or a single malt that we've never heard of, but really costly art books are 'nother matter. I, for one, do not buy them unless I'm feeling really flush, say after getting paid well for a gig. And what I may buy at that point is usually an artist I've been collecting for sometime, say a book by William Morris or Maxfield Parrish. I've been known to pay quite a few quid for that sort of work. More than I'll admit here, thank you! So what do we get here for art books? Well, Grey Walker's reviewing Meinrad Craighead's Crow Mother and the Dog God: A Retrospective , and I know that our Editor in Chief invoked executive privilege to claim Susan Seddon Boulet: A Retrospective The Art of the Pre-Raphaelites Down the past century and a half, the Pre-Raphaelites have almost always been controversial in art circles as much for their, errr, sexual activities as for their artwork; but they have always been extremely popular with museum goers, who find their art rather appealing. Elizabeth Prettejohn's new volume provides the most comprehensive view of the movement to date, and the first new work on them in over fifteen years. (Though popular with the aforementioned museum goers, they are not 'tall in favour among the weedy set known as academics.)

FINE ART
The fine art collections consist of 2800 works including easel paintings, watercolours, drawings, sketchbooks, prints, sculpture and photographs dating from c.1700 to the present day with the majority of the works dating from the 19th and 20th centuries. The main strengths of the collections are local artists, Victorian artists including the Pre-Raphaelites and 20th century British artists. Local Artists
Local artists are well represented in the collections by over 1000 works consisting of easel paintings, watercolours, drawings, sketchbooks and prints. Although 18th century artists are few, Matthias Read (1669-1747) and Robert Carlyle (1773-1825) are represented. Carlisle became a significant artistic centre in 1823, with the opening of an 'Artists' Academy'. Key 19th century local artists connected with this who are well represented in the collections include Matthew Ellis Nutter (1795-1862), a Carlisle artist who taught a number of talented pupils at the Academy, including William James Blacklock (1816-1858). Nutter's son, William Henry (1819-1872) also became a talented artist. Sam Bough RSA (1822-1878), perhaps Carlisle's most famous artist, moved to Glasgow in 1848 and finally settled in Edinburgh, becoming one of the leading Victorian landscape-painters in Scotland. Bough is represented by 88 works in the collections.
