Customers Reviews: Rating: 5 out of 5 Great Introduction to PowerBuilder This book is a great help to anyone starting out in PowerBuilder. This book covers a lot of PowerBuilder fundamentals as well as basic programming techniques. It is a really useful guide to working in PowerBuilder if you are still new to it, and it is much easier to find answers here than in the powersoft newsgroups. The style is quite readable and a lot more human than a lot of other tech-oriented books. Definitely worth checking out- although probably not useful if you are already a guru. Rating: 5 out of 5 Valuable Reference for PowerBuilder developers This book is a perfect desktop reference for novice and experienced PowerBuilder programmers alike. Many times I've spent hours trying to do something or understand something in Powerbuilder. Because PowerBuilder is such a big complex tool, sometimes it's very difficult or impossible to find a solution in PB's online help and documentation. Many times I can only vaguely remember what magazine or user group provided a clever solution to a head scratching problem. So, I was glad to get my hands on Mr. Hatton's book which is filled with nuggets of information that will save PB programmers a lot of time. I've been a full time PB programmer for 3 years and I keep this book right next to my computer.

So when I need a book on PowerBuilder and saw his name, I was thrilled. The only problem with this book is that it is not a book...It's a course binder. I think for[dollar amount] I should have received a true book. ...My comments are in no way a reflection of Chet's work, I think he does a great job of instructing, and informing. I beleive that the Publisher's were the ones that are [charging too much]. PowerBuilder 6.0

The newest upgrade of PowerBuilder delivers a predictable, reliable programming environment. But is it compelling enough to attract non-PowerBuilder developers?
by Bill Lazar Sidebar Putting Thoughts Down on Paper For years, PowerBuilder was the hot programming language, the software that every developer wanted to learn and use; it was the Java of the early 1990s, so to speak. Starting with the second version, no other software came close to the success of PowerBuilder or seemed to match its capabilities in creating client/server applications. Every programmer despaired over its high price, incredible job demand, and correspondingly high consulting rates. As if it were a high school crush, PowerBuilder became the focal point of many developers' lives. Over the years, succeeding versions of PowerBuilder have grown in important ways: adding the PowerBuilder Foundation Class Library, growing beyond Windows to support multiple operating systems and distributed applications, and integration with other facets of application development and deployment such as Sybase's own PowerDesigner (the CASE tool formerly named S-Designor), Object Cycle (source code management), and Jaguar Component Transaction Server (CTS). Indeed, all of the latter tools are included in the PowerBuilder 6.0 Enterprise Edition or are available in the PowerStudio bundle (which includes enterprise editions of PowerBuilder, Power++ (RAD C++ tool), PowerJ (RAD Java compiler), PowerDesigner AppModeler, PowerSite, and Jaguar CTS.

Tip 76: Forensic Programming
(This Tip first appeared in the March 1995 issue of Pinnacle Publishing's PowerSource magazine.) When does development end and maintenance begin? Some programmers say "I only like to work on new programs, maintenance is boring!" In actual fact, however, they are doing maintenance tasks whenever they're fixing a bug or making a change. A better question is "How do I know when I'm doing maintenance?" The answer is "You've started maintenance whenever you think your code is working." That point usually comes long before the program is done. For me, it comes every time PowerBuilder successfully saves a script or object. It can be argued that Rapid Application Development should really be called RAM because most of the time you're enhancing, fixing and changing things. Every once in a while a real, industrial strength, "This is maintenance by anyone's definition" task comes along. 50,000 lines of PowerScript, 2000 stored procedures, 400 tables that someone else developed and you have to deal with. Maybe you have to convert the database from Oracle to Sybase or vice versa. Maybe you have to rip out the stored procedures, maybe you have to put them in. Maybe you just have to figure out why it doesn't work and of course it's going live next month. I call this kind of task "Forensic Programming" because like Forensic Accounting and Forensic Entomology you're dealing with something after the fact. You're working with code, of course, not ledgers or insects, and the subject of your study might not be dead yet. But it will feel like it from time to time.

Introduction to the revised printing
Now that PowerBuilder 6.0 is a released product, it's time to update this book with questions and answers related exclusively to PowerBuilder 6.0. Questions from the previous edition have been updated to reflect the changes made by PowerBuilder 6.0, but with the understanding that not everyone will switch, I have, where possible, left the old answers in place. PowerBuilder 6.0 makes many changes to the development environment. These changes are grouped by PowerSoft into four broad categories:
  • Developer productivity PowerBuilder has included tools that allow you to write more code better and faster than ever. Wired for the Web PowerSoft continues to support immediate, high-productivity development of middle-tier application logic and its accessibility from web-based clients.

Introduction
Welcome to the world of Java programming using PowerJ, a Rapid Application Development tool from Powersoft, the makers of PowerBuilder. With PowerJ, Powersoft does for Java programming what they did for client-server development with PowerBuilder - they make it easy and fast. With PowerJ, you can write Java programs the very first day even if your Java experience is limited. This is made possible by an award-winning drag-and-drop programming interface (first used by PowerSoft in their Optima++ C++ development environment) that actually uses a Wizard to construct Java language statements for you and pastes those statements into a code editor window. Since these statements are constructed by PowerJ itself, they are error free. Of course, you still need to know programming since you will be required to use flow control statements such as if? else or while to control the execution of your code, but the real guts of the Java language are hidden from you.
