It is an event driven language used for Rapid application development (RAD). The word 'PowerBuilder' also applies to the integrated development environment used with the language. It is similar in many ways to Visual Basic with a strong SmallTalk influence, but focuses on data handling and manipulation. It is generally used as a domain-specific programming language , but since it is a Turing-complete language, it can be used as a general purpose language if desired. PowerBuilder has a native data-handling object called a DataWindow . This patented object gives the programmer a number of default tools for simplified handling of data transactions in a standardised manner across multiple RDBMS platforms. A DataWindow can be used for creating, editing and displaying data from the "back-end" database. PowerBuilder is commonly used by companies in the financial sector, in the

Java and the new Internet programming paradigm

Page 1 of 7 Advertisement "One must not forget that progress in fundamental science inevitably leads in many cases to a revolution in technology and the daily life of all people. A country which in our epoch ignores this truth dooms itself sooner or later to lagging behind in science and engineering." Leonid I. Sedov, Russian Aerospace Administrator (1971) "Java and the new Internet programming paradigm" is adapted from http://www.prenhall.com/divisions/ptr/yourdon/ Editor's Preface: It's been several months (or several years , in Internet time) since this text was written, yet its relevance remains. Herein, veteran consultant and author Ed Yourdon offers valuable food for thought for programmers considering the enormous potential of Java and its possible impact on the software industry. Whether you're weighing the merit of investing time and effort in learning and using this new technology or simply searching for a better understanding of Java and it significance, this article offers answers. ne of the most significant technological developments since the publication of Decline and Fall of the American Programmer has been the introduction of a new breed of languages and development tools for creating applications on the Internet and the World Wide Web. The "information superhighway" is the hottest thing in the computing industry today, but when the Internet and the Web first burst on the scene a couple years ago, they seemed completely divorced from the traditional application development community in IT organizations. Many of the frantic discussions of security and firewalls that take place even today make it evident that many IT managers would like to keep it this way.
