Special Olympians provide insights into power-lifting technique
DURHAM, N.C. – When more than 7,000 Special Olympics athletes came to central North Carolina in 1999 for the World Summer Games, Duke University Medical Center sports medicine researchers saw a unique opportunity to perform detailed, high-tech analysis of one particular group of these athletes the power lifters. The results of the analysis should prove beneficial for all competitive power lifters, the researchers said. The key findings were that one of the two lifting approaches is easier on the back and that the better lifters tend to keep the bar closer to their body as they lift the weight. "Our goal has always been to use scientific approaches to improve the performance of an athlete, while at the same time reducing the chances of injury," said Rafael Escamilla, research director of the Michael W. Krzyzewski Human Performance Laboratory (K Lab) at Duke and former world champion power lifter. "There are very little data out there on athletes who compete in the Special Olympics, so the 1999 Games gave us a great opportunity," Escamilla said. "What we gained from our analysis should not only help lifters in future Special Olympics, but should also be of benefit to all lifters."

6/25/04 – EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE, Calif. – The act of breaking down the body's muscles and rebuilding them can be a painful experience that many avoid, but for one member of Team Edwards it is a passion and something that has kept his mind goal oriented. For Tech. Sgt. Jason Puleri, Air Force Flight Test Center NCO-in-charge of Information Technology Directorate network systems, power lifting has been a way to keep him "fit to fight" and has allowed him to understand the importance of setting goals and accomplishing them. Sergeant Puleri said that understanding goal-setting gained through power lifting has spilled over into his military career.

How to Get Into Olympic Weight Lifting
Olympic weight lifting is a very specialized sport. Two-time Olympic weight lifter Wes Barnett advises prospective participants to start by finding and working with certified coaches. Steps: Decide if Olympic weight lifting is something that you want to do. Contact the United States Weightlifting Federation by visiting its Web site (usaweightlifting.org). This is the official organization for Olympic weight lifting. Tell them where you live (city and state); they will be able to tell you where to find clubs and coaches. Go to the nearest certified club or gym in your area for a site inspection. Select a gym and a certified coach to work with. Don't start on your own. Learn to go through the steps in lifting by working backward. Barnett says, "The biggest mistake people make is to try and get in position and lift from the floor. It is important to learn backward - from the point where the bar is in the air. Break down the lift from the last moment to the first. Coaches know this and will teach you where your body is supposed to be in the course of a lift." Tips: Only go to clubs that have been certified by the International Weightlifting Federation.

Information
Mission
To provide Powerlifting and Olympic Weightlifting enthusiasts with a forum for discussion of various lifting techniques and a platform for practice of sound techniques.
History
Though only 2 years in age, the Iron Dogs have very quickly become one of the fastest growing teams on Truman’s campus. Founded by Olympic Weightlifter Zach Schluender and Powerlifters Zac Cooper and Russ Smith, the Iron Dogs have the vision to bring competitive lifting back to Northeast MO. With so much tension in the world these days, the Iron Dogs have made a commitment to cross the lines between sports and unite for one common goal: To provide Powerlifting and Olympic Weightlifting enthusiasts with a forum for discussion of various lifting techniques and a platform for practice of sound techniques. As of March, 2003 we boast over 25 members and have made remarkable progress as a team considering our immaturity as a Truman Sport. In addition to our rapid growth, Truman State University can now boast that it has the only organized, competitive collegiate powerlifting team in the state of Missouri. The Iron Dogs’ first inaugural John Ware Classic was held on March 23, 2002 last year and was considered a huge success. Our wish is that we build on that success every year. This year's John Ware Classic saw 44 of the Midwest's best lifters go head to head to see how far they could push themselves, as well as each other. Our goal is that this meet becomes a yearly tradition with you.
