This rather shocking photo was snapped in November 16th by a spectator at the collegiate power lifting championships at Pennsylvania State. The unfortunate competitor, who expressed a plea to remain anonymous, remembered to surgeons that he was "stuck" at the bottom of a personal best attempt in the squat lift when he "sort of pulled his stomach in and pushed extra hard, at the same time as trying to complete the lift." He remembers a loud popping, splattering noise then a fierce stabbing pain and then not being able to move from the squat position. He remained in this position for about half an hour, since trying to stand caused him overwhelming agonizing pain.
Paramedics arrived and applied anaesthesia on the spot and carried him to an ambulance. He was rushed to surgery, where surgeons described the trauma as an "explosive and aggravated prolapse of the bowel". Meanwhile it was revealed that the weight was removed from his shoulders at the time of the incident by two "spotters" on either side of the lifter. The third spotter who was standing behind the lifter was unfortunately sprayed with fecal matter at the time of the incident. This spotter promptly fainted when he realized the extent of the injury to the lifter, who was a personal friend. This compounded the task of first aid officers who were at a loss as to how to treat the injury to the lifter in any case, who remained in the squatting position moaning in pain much to the consternation of the helpless audience.

I was looking through some journals and located a study performed by the Journal of Strength and Conditioning Research, they determined what I was looking for through a study involving power lifting, Olympic lifting, and sprinting on strength and power characteristics in the squat movement. This article was very interesting to me because they related it to the squat movement, which is my best lift. As a thrower I always want to get as strong as I can get but still stay explosive. In this study some good ideas surfaced to me about training in the squat for the thrower type athlete. In this study 28 male subjects between the ages of 18 and 32 were chosen. These individuals were chosen at a national level. I thought this was important because this validated the study knowing they were in good shape and had good weightlifting experience. There were four groups consisting of powerlifters, Olympic lifters, sprinters, and a control group. The thing that I didn't like about the study was that all the testing was done in one day. The results might have been different because of this.

Check with you doctor before you start an exercise program. Power lifting is unlike any other type of lifting. The goal is not to look pretty, but to lift the maximum amount of weight. In competition, power lifters perform only three lifts, the bench press, the squat, and the dead lift. Power lifting may be oldest sport known to man. It is the ultimate test of strength. In cave man times, the strongest man was the one who could lift the biggest and heaviest rock. The man or woman who could push the biggest rock off their chest could bench the most. The man or woman who could pick up the biggest rock onto their shoulders and then squat and put it down could squat the most. The man or woman who could simply lift the largest or heaviest rock could dead lift the most. The same is true in power lifting tournaments today! However, power lifters use many different weight lifting exercises to augment their training. In this essay we will offer the ultimate power lifting workout. Remember, lifting is an individual competition. The competition is between you and the weights, not an opponent. The weights are the opponent. Lift to your own ability, not to the ability of your partners. A good power lifting workout requires a spotter, or partner to help motivate each other, and to allow each individual to reach their potential. It is best to have two partners, so that they can stand on either side of the bar. In the following workout, each individual performs the complete routine before the next person lifts. This is important because it does not give the individual a chance to rest, and forces the person to max out their muscles. The workout is performed twice a week. All exercises are performed in descending sets of 20. The person should barely be able to finish the second set. For instance, in the bench press, do one set of 225lbs (two 45lb plates on each side); immediately take off one plate from each side and do another set. If the person cannot finish the second set, drop down to two 35lb plates and do another set of twenty!
