Home Portfolio My Studio Firing Process ... Contact Chris Hi, I'm Christhoper Heede. Welcome to my website. I have been working in clay for more than twenty-five years. My work is inspired by nature, especially the high Sonoran desert with its expansive sky, beautiful monsoon storms, and the variety of life that lives there. Other influences to my work include Folk Art, Contemporary, Southwestern, and Oriental. I try to capture movement and fluidity in the forms I create on the potter's wheel. I also enjoy hand building, architectural ceramics, sandblasted glass, and commissioned work. I hope you find something you think is beautiful. Raku covered Jar with "Cholla" handle.

The Fred Marer collection
During the mid 1950s the ceramics department at Otis Art Institute
(then Los Angeles County Art Institute) was a place of artistic vitality and innovative energy. At Otis, Peter Voulkos led a "revolution in clay" by questioning the tradition that ceramic forrns must be utilitarian and by creating instead nonfunctional, sculptural works that gave the medium a new freedom of expression. Voulkos attracted a group of talented students to Otis - which included Billy Al Bengston, Michael Frimkess, John Mason, Mac McClain, Ken Price, Janice Roosevelt, Jerry Rothman, Paul Soldner, and Henry Takemoto - who began their own searches for new forms of expression in clay. Although most did not fully develop their mature styles until after they left Otis, it was there that they absorbed many of the attitudes that shaped their thinking as artists. The ideas that informed their art are reflected in the collection of Fred Marer, who was their principal patron. Otis Art Institute

  • A story page carries a new story about village life several times a year (sometimes centering on one of the villagers), such as the cowboy who's a reluctant potter (because he can make more money that way), or the fireworks show. There's a tour guide for visiting (staying at the one Posada or Inn) and a book-based tour. I'm very glad Mike found a new home for his interesting story of life in a village where there was no tradition of pottery (or rather it had been entirely destroyed), but it was rediscovered from potsherds and experimenting and now supports everyone.
