[an error occurred while processing this directive] [an error occurred while processing this directive] If you enjoy Ceramic Art and surfing the web this is the site for you. You could get lost in here for hours or maybe days. I do have a few suggestions to you when surfing this site. Some dates overlap into different sections, so here are some rules to abide by when searching for something. If you are looking for an artist look in the century of which the artist lived most of their life in. If you are looking for a pottery, search for the date it was founded. Specific movements and styles in pottery will be listed according to when they were most in vogue. Please Remember this is strictly an educational tool for students, teachers, ceramists, collectors, potters, art historians, and archaeologist. I am working hard to make this site a valid resource in researching the ceramic arts but please take note that the ClayStation or Andy Clift takes no responsibility for the content that you find on these pages, nor does it claim that the material on the ClayStation or the material on any other web site linked from the ClayStation is true or factual. If you know of any errors that are certainly incorrect please email the ClayStation with the corrections, so we can further improve the validity of this site

Welcome to the first issue of Pyre for 2005, full of information and events that are happening in ceramics in W.A. and involvement of our members in exhibitions etc, interstate and overseas.
Earlier this year I had the great pleasure of being invited to say a few words at the opening of the new gallery extension to Bill Micklejohns workshop and gallery at Willyabrup in the south west. It was a wonderful evening of friends and supporters of Bills along with good food and wine. The weather was the perfect summer evening, warm and still. Bill has built a small but well proportioned new gallery, which gives him the opportunity to show off the more individual pieces of his work while still having an extensive showroom, which continues the space.
It complements the existing buildings which are mostly timber, local coffee rock (ironstone) and corrugated iron and which all fit beautifully into the local environment. They are indicative of a style of built environment that has become synonymous with the south west. It is not flashy or ostentatious and weathers and ages slowly to blend in with the local vegetation. It is also indicative of a lifestyle and approach to living.
This importance of location and region play a significant role of course in the promotion of the Margaret River region through its food and wine as well as lifestyle. In both the wine and food industries the land, climate, water etc are all seen to be expressed through the produce. The French in particular place great significance on this in the wine industry. Is there a message there that should be heeded by those of us in the art - craft - design field? Should we be attempting to express something about our locale? Should we also attempt to convince our market of the importance of saying something about where and how we live in our choice of the buildings we live in and the objects that we use and decorate them with? I like to call this space the domestic environment. It can be both external and internal. It can take in the suburban environment, the streetscape etc, the garden and courtyards as well as the internal environment.

Founded by Artus Van Briggle, of Holland Dutch descent, Van Briggle Pottery has been considered one of the great American art potteries for over a century.
Artus came to Colorado Springs after years of training at distinguished potteries and art academies in the United States and in Europe. Art Associations Art Centers Craft Shows ... Wood Fired Pottery What is Raku? Raku is a Japanese inspired method of firing that creates unpredictable smoke patterns and spectacular metallic and crackle effects in the glazes. After initially firing the piece in a kiln, it is glazed and fired a second time. When the temperature of the piece reaches between 1600 and 1800 degrees and the glaze has melted, the piece is placed in combustible materials (leaves, sawdust and pine needles) in a metal container and covered. This is called post reduction during which the oxygen is burned out of the glaze taking the colorants back to a metal producing the metallic lusters seen in raku. For more information go to here for our page on raku and pit fire techniques.
