As you will see immediately from our new presentation and website, we have a major announcement with regard to a change in the company name. Since Peggy Davies Ceramics took over the Kevin Francis Company we continued to use the name to market Figurines and Toby Jugs. Now, after lengthy deliberation and market research amongst collectors, we have decided that the backstamp should only bear the Peggy Davies Ceramics brand name. I know that you will also be interested to learn, that as a tribute to our founder, Peggy Davies, the renowned modeller, and, of course, my mother, the first figurine introduced under the Peggy Davies Ceramics backstamp will be named Peggy. The Peggy Davies family business was set-up in 1981 by my mother and myself, where we produced collections of Figurines and Toby Jugs at our workshop on the family farm in Longnor, Staffordshire. The creativity of Peggy Davies was a major feature of Royal Doulton sculptures for many years where she modelled more than 250 different figures. Her artistry was featured in the various models made by Peggy Davies Ceramics and ensured the success of the newly formed Company. The Company began working with Kevin Francis Ceramics in 1987, making a variety of limited edition pieces. Following the death of my mother in 1989, the business moved to larger premises in the City. New modellers were commissioned to carry on creating the collectable ranges – a policy that continues today. Another feature of the ‘family business’ also continues today as my son Rhys joined me in 1993 and the two of us now run Peggy Davies Ceramics in Stoke-on Trent. Things seem to be going full circle as we return solely to the family name, because as many of you will know, we recently moved into new premises. The planning permission has now come through for the changes we have planned for the building, so it will be all systems go as soon as the work is completed.

"The Great Wave" - flower vase, 7" x 4.5" Craig's special trademark "swirly-glaze" ceramic art is done on molded white bisqueware, producing striking pieces, similar in appearance to the "swirl-painting" that the designer Louis Ipsen of the Bauer Pottery Company made in the 1940's. Craigwas born in Boise, Idaho on March 3, 1954, and his family moved to California and settled in San Francisco in 1956 on Lombard Street, and then in 1958 moved 25 miles south to Redwood City. At the age of eight he began working in ceramics at Peninsula School, a private school in Menlo Park, under the guidance of his instructor, Mrs. Billie Shaw. Experimentation with the swirly process began in 1996, and on October 10, 1996 the technique was discovered that potters had attempted for centuries. Swirly glazing attempts has a long history, beginning with ancient Egyptian potters over 6,000 years ago, when they tried to duplicate the swirly patterns of minerals.

http://www.greektravel.com/sifnos/pottery/
Sifnos Pottery
It is not known when pottery began on the island though it is mentioned by Theophrastus in the third century B.C.. The oldest pottery found dates back to the eighth century B.C. and Pliny makes mention of Sifnos ceramics in the first century B.C. By the eighteenth century potters from Sifnos were traveling all over Greece selling and their ceramics and in many cases moved away from the island to become potters in other towns and islands such as Lesvos. There is even a colony of Sifnos potters in Amaroussi, a suburb of Athens. Today there are still many who practice the art of ceramics, just as their fathers and grandfathers have. The workshops are located in Vathy, Kamares, Platyialos, Cheronissos and Pharos, but there are shops where the ceramics are sold all over the island. In Kamares I lived in a house owned by an old man named Markos who was a potter. He had a kiln on the roof and a potters wheel in the house that he pumped with a pedal to turn. My sister was an apprentice to him for a couple summers and through him developed a love for ceramics. Markos made pottery until his hands became paralized and a few years later he died. His house is now a restaurant. Sadly this is the case with many of the old potters and there are only a handful now creating, but they still use the traditional tools and except for some embellishments, the art has not changed all that much in the last few thousand years. The clay is still dug from the surrounding hills, the wheels are in most cases powered by foot and the kilns still fueled with wood.
