Who We Are
Pig Placement Network is an adoption service for pet pigs, which is part of the Society for Advancement of Pet Pigs, a non-profit corporation. As with all pets, potbellied pigs can lose their homes or become abandoned. Our group, made up of volunteers, strives to assist these pets by finding new, suitable, homes. We also work closely with many pet owners, shelters, veterinarians and the general public to provide education about pigs as pets. Often, through education and support of a pig parent, we are able to solve a problem and keep a pig in its original home. The Pig Placement Network maintains a descriptive list of pet pigs that are up for adoption. These pigs are either living with their current owners or being temporarily cared for in foster homes. We need homes for both indoor and outdoor pets, some are babies, some are older, some have disabilities and require special care, others are overweight and need to be placed on diets, but most of all, each pig needs a loving home. Our volunteers recruit and educate prospective pig parents before matching an adoptable pig to a new home. Our goal is to make a successful match by carefully screening new parents and providing the information they will need before deciding to make a 15 – 20 year commitment to a pet pig. As is true for so many pets, the potbellied pig is not for everyone, but can be a source of great joy for the right person or family.

POT BELLIED PIGS
The Vietnamese Miniature Pot-bellied Pig is usually black or black and white in color. The nose is short and tail is straight. At birth they weigh 8-15 ounces and will have a mature weight of 60-125 pounds. They are clean, intelligent, and can make high quality pets. They usually have good dispositions and are seldom aggressive towards humans with the exception of mating boars. They root and squeal. If pigs are kept in a clean environment, odor is not a problem except for uncastrated males who develop a strong scent at 3-5 months of age. In general, pigs require the same environmental comfort zone as do you and I. The major differences are that they don't sweat or pant to cool themselves. Ideal temperatures for adult pigs are 60-75 degrees F. The major problem is not keeping them warm enough in the winter, but rather keeping them cool enough during the summer months. If housed outside, they need access to sprinklers, pools, and/or fans to maintain their normal temperature. Heat stress is a major problem and can be fatal. For the individual pet pig that is kept in the house, housing requirements are simple. The pig needs a place to sleep and a place to eat. Pigs are nesting animals and will readily sleep in a dog bed. They are very sloppy drinkers and drinking water should be placed in a heavy bowl and kept in an area where spills are acceptable (shower stall). Sanitation is accomplished by house-breaking at an early age. Pigs can be trained to use a litter box successfully or trained to go outdoors. Pigs have extremely well developed senses of smell and are incredibly strong. It is important that all food sources within reach of the pig are extremely well-secured or they will get to them. This includes refrigerators!

Sorry for so many questions lol  thorngirl Hello...I'll try to help as much as I can.
#1) You take care of a piggy the same as any other animal.
#2) You don't need the mud but they sure do like a place to keep cool and it does help keep fleas and such off them.
thorngirl Please email me. I tried to post,my computer froze then I tried to edit and I took too long so I got "booted" in a sense. I'll try answer any question you have. I have been raising pot bellies for a few years now both inside and outside.
Thanks, Thorngirl

Prissy snorted again and Abby ducked to avoid her wet snout. "Quiet Tess, they'll hear you," she whispered frantically. Tess cocked her head again. "I can still hear them," she whispered back. Prissy slipped out of Tess's arms and trotted down the hall, then stopped and looked back. She seemed to be waiting for them to follow her. She snorted again and disappeared into the kitchen. "Let's get out of here," Abby said, keeping her voice low. She struggled to her feet. "Before something really bad happens." "We can't leave Prissy," whimpered Tess. "Prissy will be fine," Abby said, grabbing Tess by the arm. "We're the ones in danger. C'mon, let's go!" Piglets Don't Watch Television

Exotic `Fad Pets' Need Special Care, So Do The Homework
By KRISTEN LEVINE Tribune correspondent
Published: Oct 2, 2004
Iguanas and hedgehogs and skunks, oh, my! Those critters and other exotic species make up about 9 percent of the American pet population, an American Pet Product Manufacturers Association survey says. But do they really make good pets? Before taking on an unusual pet, be sure to read up on its environmental and care needs. When such pets develop veterinary or behavioral problems, says Tampa veterinarian Teresa Lightfoot, it usually has something to do with their care. ``It's important for caretakers to be very knowledgeable about the animals native environment and attempt to mimic that in captivity,'' says Lightfoot, who is board certified in avian species. She also sees a variety of exotic species at Florida Veterinary Specialists in Tampa. Some exotics become ``fad pets'' that are popular for 10 to 15 years. Recent examples include potbellied pigs, sugar gliders, prairie dogs and hedgehogs. Not all of the more popular exotics make good companions in captivity.
