    Introduction
Ancestors of the potbellied pig were first domesticated as long as 10,000 years ago in South China.
The Vietnamese Potbellied Pigs that were first imported to Canada in 1985 by Keith Connell are the breed known in Vietnam as the "I" breed. These pigs are from the Red River delta area and are mostly black with wrinkled, dished faces and small eked ears. Known as a 'small pig' the adults are about 200 pounds. The "I" breed pigs came to be known as the "Con Line".
In 1988 and 1989 Keith Leavitt of Cypress Texas imported more potbellied pigs from "the China area". These pigs had some white markings, smoother faces, longer noses and more upright ears compared to the Connell pigs. They look similar to the 'Mong Cai" breed from Northeastern Vietnam, along the Chinese border. Other groups were imported from England and Sweden. The English group (imported into Indiana) contained some pure white potbellied pigs. Breeding among these groups of pigs has produced the potbellied pig of today.

These good-natured pets are big (60 to 110 lbs. on average, with shoulder height ranging from 4 to 18 inches) and love to root. Caring for them requires space and a mellow attitude about the lawn and home, since a potbellied pig will root around in carpet, rugs, flowers and grass. Steps: You can keep your pig either indoors or outdoors. They're generally clean animals, and they prefer to relieve themselves outside. When your pig's tail stops wagging and becomes horizontal, it's a sign that she needs to relieve herself. Feed your pig twice a day with commercially prepared potbellied-pig food that's formulated to meet your pig's nutritional needs. Have a veterinarian advise you on the proper amount to feed, since food requirements vary with the pig and depend on age and weight. Be sure to watch your pig's weight closely. Train your pig to use a litter box if she must be kept indoors for long periods of time. Keep the box far away from her food and bedding area.

POTBELLIED PIGS JUST THE FACTS, PLEASE!
Potbellied pigs are clean, intelligent, affectionate creatures. Pigs are the fourth smartest animal group on the planet, following only humans, apes and chimps, whales and dolphins. Their intelligence, curiosity and charm make them appealing, but it may also make them a challenging pet. Pigs have special needs; they make wonderful pets for those people who understand their special needs and are willing to educate themselves and meet those needs. They require extra patience and perseverance, but it is more than made up for by their wonderful personalities! SIZE All potbellied pigs are miniature in relationship to their cousins, the farm hog. Farm hogs can grow up to 900 pounds or more. Pigs have dense compact bodies, especially when compared to dogs or people. A 150-pound pig is much smaller than an 80-pound German shepherd or a 100-pound person. A 150-pound pig is not as big as one may imagine!

Activities and Operational Information The Society for the Advancement of Pet Pigs, Inc (SAPPI) is an adoption and rescue organization that operates to help rescue unwanted or abandoned pet pigs (usually Vietnamese potbellied pigs or other miniature pet pigs) from their current owners, animal shelters, other rescue organizations, veterinarians, etc. SAPPI uses the name "Pig Placement Network" for its rescue and placement activities. SAPPI takes calls from pet pig owners, shelters, other rescues, animal control officers and veterinarians who have pet pigs in need of homes. If the pig becomes unwanted due to a behavioral or diet problem, our volunteers try to assist in correcting the problem and keeping the pig in its home. However, if the problem cannot be solved or if the pig has been abandoned or surrendered to a shelter, SAPPI takes possession of the pig and places it into foster care. Like many animal rescue organizations, SAPPI does not have a shelter or sanctuary and must rely on a network of volunteers and foster homes to take in unwanted pigs and provide shelter and care for them until new homes can be found. SAPPI often assists foster homes through providing pet pig food to help alleviate some of the expenses.

    Potbellied Pigs
Potbellied pigs first entered the United States in 1985 and are growing in popularity. Newborn pigs weigh about two pounds, but mature animals can reach 5 - 100 pounds. Lifespan is 12 - 15 years and female pigs reach maturity at 7 months, males at 5 months. Diet: We recommend the newer specialized minipig rations. Standard 14 - 16 percent protein swine rations can be used, but require extra supplemental vitamins and minerals. The pig’s higher fiber requirements can be met with occasional fresh vegetables and fruits. As could be expected, adult pigs can be prone to obesity, so it is best to never feed "junk" food. Housing: Potbellied pigs are most comfortable at 60-70 degrees F. Pigs can tolerate cold better than hot. Shade plus fresh water is essential if housed outside. Pigs also prefer a "nesting" area for sleeping.

Many things contribute to a happy, healthy pig. The following article by Arlen Wilbers, D.V.M., is in no way exhaustive, but it is an attempt to touch on some common problems and offer some common sense guidelines to the potbellied pig owner or soon-to-be owner.
What is a Miniature Potbellied Pig?
At the present time, research has indicated that these little animals, with proper care, can live approximately fifteen years. Potbellied pigs are docile, easy going and have virtually no body odor. Their intelligence has been compared to the dolphins and primates, thus making them one of the most intelligent house pets known. The miniature potbellied pig is truly a remarkable animal and a remarkable pet. They prefer a clean environment, will not scratch your furniture, and are not prone to getting fleas or ticks. Because potbellied pigs do not shed like a dog or a cat, they are the perfect pet for anyone who suffers from common pet allergies. The miniature potbellied pig is an exceptionally intelligent pet for those of you who can give love and attention to a gentle and loyal companion.
