Potbellied Pig," and focuses on what it is like to own a pet pig. Some
responses are in jest.
WHAT IS A POTBELLIED PIG AND WHERE DID IT COME FROM?
It seems like all of a sudden, people are hearing more and more about
potbellied pigs being used as family pigs. They originated in China and
Southeast Asia thousands of years ago. Their history is quite amazing. They
descended from wild herds of swine which migrated from China into Viet Nam and Laos. They have been raised as food and pets in the Asian culture for many centuries. In the 1950's, some potbellied pigs were exported to Scandinavia from Asia BUT... In 1985, four boars and twelve sows were imported into Canada which began the first "pet pig" industry. Can you imagine a beginning of 16 to roughly 40,000 nationwide!

Though the breed is not new in the United States, many people are unaware of the specific traits of Pot Belly Pigs. This breed is famous for its affection to humans and intelligence. Many Pot Belly Pigs are used as pets and appear to make good companions on the condition that owners supply them with necessary care and apply efforts to train the pets. Care and health issues should come to the fore when owning the Pot Belly Pig. Photo source:

Pot Belly Pigs - Diet and Housing
Pot Belly Pigs weigh no more than 2 pounds at birth. They grow rapidly and may become about 100-150 pounds when mature. Generally, pigs grow until they are four years old. Breed owners are advised to feed their pets special swine rations produced with the animal needs in mind. As a rule, such rations contain about 14-16% of protein and a certain percentage of vitamins and minerals. In fact, vitamins and other essential constituents may be consumed as extra supplements. It should be mentioned that pigs have higher fiber requirements than those of other animals. Therefore, it is recommended to supply Pot Belly Pigs with fresh vegetables and fruits. This can be done on occasion. "Junk" food is not recommended for Pot Belly Pigs since adult animals are likely to become overweight easily on this diet.

**Acidophilus for a healthy pet** popular
(29 votes)
The normal, healthy colon contains friendly bacteria (85% lactobacillus and 15% coliform bacteria). It is the friendly bacterial flora found in yogurt and is essential to the digestive system. When these bacteria are not in balance, flatulence, constipation, and malabsorption of nutrients may occur, all of which may lead to Candida. Acidophilus taken as a dietary supplement may help to detoxify and to rebuild a balanced intestinal flora. It is used for the prevention of Candida as well as for treatment. Acidophilus aids the digestion and helps to replace the friendly intestinal flora.

Pet pigs face a lack of veterinary care
News Category: Farming / Livestock
06 September 2004 A survey of clinical problems identified in pet pigs in the UK revealed “criticism of the veterinary care provided by general practitioners”, according to a paper recently published in the Veterinary Record. The survey was carried out among the 300 members of the UK Potbellied Pig Club and compared with the clinical work-load of the club’s consultant veterinary surgeon, Dr John Carr. Dr Carr examined 26 pigs with clinical problems over an 18-month period during 1998 and 1999; all bar one were potbellied pigs and the other was a castrated male Tamworth pig. Ten of the 26 pigs presented had mobility problems. This was due to overgrown feet, arthritis, foot abscess and sprains. Six pigs had skin problems and all the other cases had problems ranging from pneumonia to being grossly overweight. The questionnaire also asked owners about veterinary assistance offered by general practitioners and with 29 responses, 10 stated that the veterinary assistance was good, but 19 stated that the help was poor. The main comment was that the veterinary surgeon had no knowledge of pigs, two owners complained of poor attitude towards their pets and two veterinarians were unable to provide suitable ‘pig’ medicines.

Is this piggy passe?
It isn't easy to root out those once-trendy potbellied pigs.
By Beth Jones
The Roanoke Times
Ahhh, the '90s. "The Simpsons." Grunge music. Vietnamese potbellied pigs. Anyone who picked up a People magazine in that decade will remember George Clooney and his much-beloved potbellied pig, Max. The potbellied porkers originated in Vietnam - hence the name - and arrived in the United States in the mid-1980s, quickly turning into the must-have pet of the rich and famous and then regular folk. Many of the pet pigs purchased in the past decade, though, are now seniors or, well, sleeping the big sleep. And because today's celebrities coo not over oinkers but tiny dogs (e.g., Paris Hilton's Tinkerbell), people who keep potbellied pigs as pets are harder to root out than a Pearl Jam T-shirt - particularly in Western Virginia.
