    NATIVE AMERICAN RESEARCH
    IN MICHIGAN
    INTRODUCTION
Using the Ottawa, Chippewa and Potawatomi tribes as examples
Before the arrival of the first white man, Michigan was inhabited by 15,000 Indians, members of the Miami, Chippewa, Menominee, Ottawa, Potawatomi and Wyandot tribes. Today the number is considerably less. While it is often difficult to trace Native ancestry it is not impossible.
When doing Native American research proceed as you would any other research - backwards, from yourself to your parents to their parents, etc. and from death to marriage to birth.
While the lessons below are numbered one to ten, you may read them in any order. Proceed at your own pace, there are no assignments other than to apply what you have learned to your own research.
    Lesson One - Federal Census

    Lesson Two - Indian Census

    Lesson Three - Addresses

    Lesson Four - Church Records

"People of the Three Fires": There are three major tribal groups in Michigan today: the Chippewa (Ojibwe), the Ottawa, and the Potawatomi. They comprise what is called the Three Fires Council. Although these three tribes have similar cultures and share the same territory, there are still some differences. Ottawa are found in the northern reaches of the Great Lakes; in michigan they occupy the western half of the Lower Peninsula. The Ottawa people were seasonal wanderers of the land and sailors of the Great Lakes gathering wild rice, netting fish, trapping both large and small game, and hunting large game such as moose, deer, and caribou. Ottawa people continue to be great traders and craftsmen. One hallmark of Ottawa life is the birch bark canoe. When the French came, the Ottawa people adapted well to the fur-trading economy and managed to avoid major military entanglements with the European colonial powers competing with each other for North American land and resource dominance. They did, however, fight with the Iroquois throughout the early 1600's.

Other Sites Terre Haute - A history and a guide This is my history and guide to my adopted home - Terre Haute, Indiana. Indians of Indiana This is not a history of any particular tribe but of Indiana. From first contact with the white man and their relentless move westward, pushing the Native Americans before them, from about 1650 onwards many tribes lived for a while in Indiana. The story of Indiana between 1750 and 1840 is the story of what happens when two very different cultures meet. The Kickapoo also belong to the Alogonquian speaking people. They take their name from Kiwegapawa, which means "he stands about" or "he moves about". The Kickapoo homeland was originally in northwest Ohio and southern Michigan in the area between Lake Eerie and Lake Michigan. By 1658 attacks from the east by the Ottawa, Neutral and Iroquois Indians had forced them into southwest Wisconsin. Around 1700 they had begun to move south into central Illinois and the Wabash Valley in Indiana. The Miami are also an Alogonquian speaking nation. Their original homeland was northern Indiana, north eastern Illinois and north western Ohio. The Wea and Piankashaw are part of the Miami nation but were forced from the area by the Iroquois in the 1650's. They settled in Wisconsin and northern Illinois but by around 1710 had mostly returned to Indiana. Their name, Me-ah-me (whence Maumee), and in the full plural form Ou-miami-wek, is of uncertain meaning and derivation. Early English writers called them Twightwee, a corruption of their Iroquois name, intended to imitate the cry of a crane. The first European contact was recorded as being about 1654 when two French explorers found some Miami refugees northwest of Green Bay, Wisconsin. The first written record of them was in 1658.

eet the proud and noble race of people who populated the New World long before the coming of the white man. Here are the Native Americans, both North and South, and here also is their story. A story which ranges from the very dawn of man, to those dark days when the white man "found" this new world. Unfortunately for them, this was the beginning of the end of their way of life. Here you'll meet Crazy Horse and Montezuma as well as Sitting Bull and the Inuit. You'll find Cheyenne and Aztec, Apache and Inca, Sioux and Maya and all the other tribes. From the cold, snow covered lands of the far north to the cold and wind blown shores of Tierra del Fuego in the south, this is their story. It was their land before it was ours, and we owe them much..................

INDIAN HISTORY PRESERVED IN VILLAGE STREETS The street names in the Fermilab Village come from the pages of Illinois history, reminders of the years of settlement of midwestern United States. When the first white settlers came to northeastern Illinois, they found it inhabited largely by the Potawatomi Indians, with possibly a few small bands of the Illinois and Ottawa tribes scattered about the region. In the northwestern part of the State were Winnebagoes and the united Sauk and Fox tribes. In 1804 the Sauk and Fox tribes signed a treaty which ceded 15 million acres of land in Wisconsin and Illinois to the U.S. government. A faction led by Chief Black Hawk opposed the treaty. The Indians claimed that white squatters were violating the terms of the treaty and in 1832 the Black Hawk War broke out over these violations. Black Hawk's forces were soundly defeated and the Indians were forced westward across the Mississippi River. In another effort to open up settlement, the U.S. government held a great council with Chippewas, Ottawas and Potawatomi tribes in Chicago in 1833. As a result, five million acres of Illinois land was traded for an equal amount of land beyond the Mississippi.
