PostScript Last modified: Friday, January 18, 2002 A page description language (PDL) developed by Adobe Systems. PostScript is primarily a language for printing documents on laser printers , but it can be adapted to produce images on other types of devices . PostScript is the standard for desktop publishing because it is supported by imagesetters, the very high-resolution printers used by service bureaus to produce camera-ready copy. PostScript is an object-oriented language , meaning that it treats images, including fonts , as collections of geometrical objects rather than as bit maps . PostScript fonts are called outline fonts because the outline of each character is defined. They are also called

19. Use Of PostScript In Variable Data Printing
postscript programming, training, and consulting for commercial printers in the print on demand market.
http://www.tgreer.com/ps_vdp.html
Introduction
Most people in the printing industry think of PostScript as a graphics format, application output, a page description language, a type of font, or the internal language of RIPs and digital printers. All of that is true. The reason it's true is because PostScript is fundamentally a powerful programming language. This aspect of PostScript is largely ignored, for a variety of reasons. Not many programmers spend time in the prepress shop. Besides, Adobe was more concerned about using PostScript to create the Desktop Publishing industry, than in marketing PostScript to the IT community. The Variable Data Printing (VDP) market is maturing. With this maturity we see a host of new standards, devices, and applications. We also find considerable confusion about which set of these tools to use. In this article, I'll show you how using PostScript as a programming language can address the challenges of VDP.
Hello World
Likely the only PostScript you've seen is output by QuarkXpress or Adobe Illustrator. It's daunting to understand, to say the least. But VDP programming is a different challenge than writing code to support all the features of a full-blown application. PostScript code doesn't need to be nearly so complex! Let's look at a simple PostScript program. In the time-honored tradition, we'll write a program that produces a single page with the text "Hello world". You can write PostScript code in any text editor, and then use a tool such as Acrobat Distiller or GhostScript, an open-source (free) program, to process the file.

  • What is RoPS?
The RoPS interpreter is a Microsoft Windows implementation of the PostScript programming language interpreter described in Adobe Systems' book, the 'PostScript language reference manual.' RoPS is optimized for viewing documents on screen, using TrueType fonts. It's ideal for reading PostScript documents downloaded from the Web. There are lots of good reasons for using RoPS! If you are interested in using RoPS in your own project, please contact us for licensing details.
    RoPS version 6.5c
has been released. This adds the facility to display a page's bounding box and fixes a couple of minor bugs: see readme.txt for more details.
Version 6.5 is PostScript level two compatible. The older (level one PostScript only) version is still available though, and it's now
