Department of Defense:
Graduate Psychology Education Program
Educating and Training Health Service Psychologists to Meet
Proposed Action For many U.S. soldiers, the fighting does not end on the battlefield. Many returning military personnel face sleepless nights, heightened anxiety, and sudden flashbacks that seem to transport them instantly back to the horrors and dangers of combat. Thousands of returning soldiers are struggling with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), depression, substance abuse, social withdrawal, and unemployment. As these problems are increasing throughout the armed forces, there is a critical need to expand mental and behavioral health services. Recommended Funding Vehicle The recommended funding vehicle for the proposed D-GPE program is the FY 2006 Military Quality of Life and Veterans Affairs Appropriations (Defense Health Program). Funds are envisioned to flow through Fort Detrick to the Henry Jackson Foundation (HJF), a not-for-profit organization dedicated to improving military medicine and public health. Since 1983, HJF has helped military personnel conduct quality medical research and education programs. With this extensive experience, HJF is envisioned as the ideal organization to administer grants to military and VA psychology programs to help meet the mental health needs of our returning troops. The APA has cultivated the support of these institutions as well as the leadership of HJF for this proposed program, and has discovered there is substantial support and precedent for this type of funding arrangement.

Post Traumatic Stress Disorder Bibliography In association with Amazon.com.... "The PTSD Bibliography: Because so many of these books serve survivors across categories, we have not attempted to classify them. Rather what appears here is an all-inclusive list sorted into only four categories: Books, Brochures, Journals, and Articles. Books Many of these books are written for a readership of therapy professionals. However, even those may have significant value for readers who are survivors or survivors' friends and family. The following list of books is annotated only when its title seems to inadequately describe its content. While many of the books listed below are out of print, they can still be found in libraries. Coffey, Rebecca. For survivors : “What, at a minimum, should I expect from a therapist? What, at a minimum, should a therapist do to meet those expectations? How far can I trust my version of reality? How far can I trust my therapist's version? What does the controversy about disinterred memories of childhood trauma imply for me in my selection of a therapist? What is recovery from psychological trauma? And how will I know when I have achieved it?”. For survivors’ friends, family, and therapists

http://www.edjj.org/reaching.html
Reaching out to parents of youth with disabilities in the juvenile justice system Background Youth with disabilities are over-represented in the juvenile justice system. Common disabilities in this population include attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), learning disabilities (LD), developmental disabilities (DD), depression, conduct disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and anxiety. Research demonstrates that a high proportion of youth in the corrections system have never been identified as having a disability or have been misidentified (EDJJ, 1999). Consequently, many children and their families have not had the necessary assessments, or the academic, social, or psychological interventions that could have resulted in positive family interaction and change. In addition, advocates report two significant trends among youth that receive special education services: 1. Schools are increasingly referring youth with disabilities to the juvenile justice system. The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) has provisions related to youth with disabilities in the juvenile justice system. 2. There is a lack of appropriate special education services for youth in correction settings.

How you can help Therapy for Post-Traumatic Stress and Dissociative Conditions:
What to Look for and How to Choose a Therapist
One of the primary roles of Sidran Foundation's PsychTrauma Information Service is to assist people who have been traumatized in finding various kinds of help. "Treatment" is usually sought when the behavioral adaptations (usually called "symptoms") typical of trauma survivors become disabling, interfering with work, home life, recreation, sleep, parenting and other aspects of daily function. Our aim is not only to help people feel better and function better, but also to help them learn to be informed and empowered consumers in general and consumers of mental health services, in particular. We hope trauma survivors find that taking appropriate and well-considered action to improve one's life is made a little easier by the information on this page. If you are currently in crisis: The process of choosing a helpful therapist takes some time, thought, and focus. If you are currently in a crisis, or are worried that you might hurt or kill yourself or someone else, please contact your community's mental health center, hospital emergency room, or crisis hotline. When the crisis has passed, this brochure will help you organize the task of finding a therapist for on-going treatment. What is Good Trauma Therapy? A Good Trauma Therapist?

OP-6.2.-Anger priming in 14 month old children Potegal, M., Anderson, A., Thomas, K. and Shapiro, E
Pediatric Neuropsychology Clinic, Department of Pediatrics, University of Minnesota, USA We have also conjectured that humans may experience a comparable priming of anger. We now report that when mothers of 14 month old children (N=88) provoked them twice in the same laboratory frustration/restraint situation, the childrens´ response to the second trial provocation was intensified. Strugglingincreased by 8%, protest vocalization by 38%, and angry facial expressions by 40%. A MANOVA showed a significant overall increase in second trial anger responding. Because a common, anger-provoking intervention by a child´s mother is involved, these observations provide a simple, ecologically valid experimental model for anger escalation which exactly parallels the "attack priming" paradigm previously developed to investigate escalation in other species.
