Professor Darlene Sadlier Email: sadlier@indiana.edu P701 Portuguese Literature Topic: Modernity and Nationhood: 19th-Century Portuguese Prose W 4:00pm – 6:30pm/section #4374/3 cr./Ballantine Hall 205 In 1865, the poet Antero de Quental wrote a polemical essay entitled "Bom Senso e Bom Gosto" which galvanized Portugal's literary community. In it, he attacked Lisbon's eminence grise António de Castilho, who, in a preface to a book of poems by his friend Pinheiro Chagas, had criticized Quental and other Coimbra intellectuals for their left-liberal politics and literary radicalism. Among those who ultimately aligned themselves with Quental's critique of the nation's malaise was the novelist Eça de Queiroz, who became one of the major literary figures in late 19th-century Europe. Following the 1865 polemic, Quental, Eça and others formed the "Generation of 1870," which sought to reform and modernize the nationmost visibly through a series of public lectures, the Casino Conferences, that were ultimately deemed "subversive" and banned by the government. Despite the forced closure of the conference, the literary and political agenda of the Generation of 70 had significant repercussions: it was instrumental in the creation of the Republican Party and the demise of a centuries-old monarchy; and it inspired a group of avant-garde writersmost prominently Fernando Pessoa, who became the leading figure of Portuguese modernism. According to critic Jacinto do Prado Coelho, the Generation of 70 was also important to the formation of the Spanish Generation of 98. In the seminar we will read authors whose works form part of the exchange and debate begun in 1865 about modernity and the Portuguese nation. Readings will include fiction as well as the essay. Students will be required to write a seminar paper on a topic to be decided in consultation with the instructor.

A Brief History of Portuguese-language Literature
by Piero Scaruffi E-mail Main Literary page Ancient Literature ... Reileturas (Note: Portuguese literature, just like Italian literature , is haunted by countless books of extremely boring non-fiction that literary historians have been over-rating for centuries, perhaps as a way to make sure that future historians will over-rate their own writings. I have tried to minimize non-fiction: avoid all books marked with [h]. They are only for literary historians.
Also, I have tried to modernize the names. Lengthy Portuguese first and last names are notoriously hilarious, something that can detract from the real merit of the artist. I tried to unite all the first names of a person with hyphens. Ditto for last names. You can discard the first names after the first, and the last names after the last. So Jose Antonio Porcel y Salablanca should simply be Jose Porcel. For the time being, I kept the long format Jose-Antonio Porcel-y-Salablanca, but the hyphens should clarify which one is the first name and which one is the last name. I also "normalized" all the accented vocals of the Portuguese language to make it more "international". Piero Scaruffi

A few authors stand out in the 13 th century; the priests Airas Nunes and Joan Airas de Santiago, João Garcia de Guilhade, and the jogral (professional musician) Martin Codax . The songs of the troubadours were of three types: cantigas de amor, or plaintive love songs; cantigas de amigo, or songs about suitors, put into the mouths of women in delightful native forms still alive in oral folk tradition; and cantigas de escarnho e de mal dizer, or mocking and slanderous songs. More than 2000 songs of the troubadours survive. They are gathered in three cancioneiros, or songbooks, and a fourth book of a different character, containing legends in praise of the Virgin Mary by King Alfonso X of León and Castile. siglo de oro , whose play, "La verdad sospechosa", furnished Corneille with the inspiration and material for his "Menteur", which in its turn is the cornerstone of the classic comedy of France. The printing press was set up in the new regions in 1539, eighty years before the Pilgrims reached Massachusetts, and about 1550 Charles V Napoleonic invasion. In terms hardly less passionate than theirs the insurgent Spanish colonists celebrated their struggle against the domination from over the sea. The romantic movement, following in the wake of neo-Classicism, had owed its great success in European lands to its evocation of traditions of the medieval past. Naturally, none such existed for the colonists of the newly-found lands, and it is rather with respect to matters of external form than those of substance that romanticism found a reflex in the Spanish-American literature. In general, it may be said that, of the various genres, it is the lyric that had received the greatest development in the Spanish American regions. The novel has been written with more or less success by an occasional gifted spirit; the drama has not fared equally well. For a more detailed consideration of the subject with which we are concerned it seems best to deal with it according to the geographical divisions marked by the existing states. Mexico This was formerly the Viceroyalty of New Spain. It was the colony most favoured by the Spanish administration and in it culture struck its deepest roots. Here was set up the first printing press, and here was founded, as has been said, the first university, which, authorized by the
