Computerized Databases
The first database listed below covers the whole field of language and literature. The others cover the even wider area of the humanities generally. MLA International Bibliography . In electronic form (1963- ). In print (Blue Area Floor 3, 1963-89). This is produced by the Modern Language Association of America and 'indexes critical materials on modern language, literature, linguistics, and folklore... It provides access to over 3,000 journals and series published worldwide, monographs, working papers and proceedings, bibliographies, and more'. Arts and Humanities Citation Index . In electronic form (1983- ). A citation index groups together all newly published items that have cited (i.e. referred to) the same earlier work. This allows you to retrieve new material, rather than tracing older references on a subject. In printed form, the Permuterm Subject Index facilitates subject searching using keywords from document titles only, and the Source Index enables author searching. Access to Arts and Humanities Citation Index requires an ATHENS username and password. Any student or member of staff of the University of Manchester can register for an ATHENS username and password at the Reference and Information Point on Blue Area Floor 1.

The department reserves the right to remove from any class students who have not satisfied its prere-quisite(s). The department also reserves the right to remove from any class students who should be placed at a higher level. Notes on Elementary and Intermediate Spanish sequences: 1. There are three sequences that cover the Elementary and Intermediate levels. Students interested in Spanish for General Purposes may complete SPANISH 110, 120, 230 and 240. Students who readily learn foreign languages may elect the intensive two-semester sequence SPANISH 126 and 246. General information The Department of Spanish and Portuguese combines strong academic programs with personalized advising to attract a rapidly growing number of majors and minors. Spanish is a particularly popular choice of today's students. Many also work toward dual degrees, combining a major in Spanish or Portuguese with majors in a wide variety of fields. With careful planning, most students find ample time to fulfill requirements for a double major. For majors with regional or global interests, additional certificate work in Latin American Studies or International Relations is an attractive option. Besides offering an array of language, literature, and culture courses, the department hosts numerous activities for its majors throughout the year. These include a beginning-of-year reception, career and study abroad nights, and an end-of-year reception and awards ceremony for graduating majors. The Spanish Club, open to all students, promotes movies, dinners, and other opportunities to hear and speak Spanish. Study abroad is also an important component of undergraduate study, with most majors and minors arranging to participate in a semester- or year-long program. The department offers a summer program in Salamanca, Spain; a

STUDYING PORTUGUESE AT CAMBRIDGE
What sort of a language is Portuguese?
Portuguese is the fifth world language. It is spoken by approximately 200 million people on four continents, Europe, South America, Africa and Asia. It has remained the official language of the former Portuguese colonies in these continents, and important cultural, trade and political links persist between them and Portugal itself. Portuguese is a Romance language, closest to Spanish but with similarities also to French and Italian. A knowledge of any of these languages, and in particular Spanish may be useful but is not essential since Portuguese in Cambridge, although available to students with a G.C.S.E. or A' level qualification, is also, and perhaps more frequently, taught as a beginners' course, with no assumption of a prior acquaintance with the language.
Why study it at Cambridge?

After The Revolution: Twenty Years of Portuguese Literature, 1974–1994. Edited by Helena Kaufman and Anna Klobucka. Lewisburg: Bucknell University Press; London: Associated University Press, 1997. 252 pp. $38.50. In an article published in 1983 in the journal Prelo After The Revolution: Twenty Years of Portuguese Literature, 1974–1994 . This ambiguity runs throughout their book. A collection of ten essays, written by eleven authors, the book recovers the last two decades of Portuguese literature and passes through the genres of poetry, drama and essay. However, it devotes special attention to the genre of novel which occupies half of the book. While the production of novels did not exceed other genres, it certainly commands the most attention from literary critics, perhaps because it better expresses the obsessions of cultural studies, such as overstated anthropological approaches, ethnic and gender-based analyses, and also political agendas. In displaying the hue of these trendy critical strategies, Kaufman and Klobucka’s book is, for better or for worse, absolutely up-to-date. The editors have subdivided the book into three parts. First, the introduction integrates Kaufman and Klobucka’s "Politics and Culture in Post-revolutionary Portugal" and Boaventura de Souza Santos’s "State and Society in Portugal." The middle section, Overviews, features Fernando Martinho, José Oliveira Barata and Onésimo T. Almeida discussing poetry, drama and essay, respectively. Finally, the third and largest section, incorporates five analyses of Portuguese fiction. It includes Helena Kaufman and José Ornela’s treatment of the relationship between fiction and history, Ellen Sapega’s polemic on national identity, Phillis Peres’s argument about cultural and narrative consequences of the loss of the empire, and Isabel Allegro Magalhães’s and Ana Paula Ferreira’s surveys on women’s writing and feminist writing.

I. Program Information
The Spanish program of the University's Romance Languages Department is one of the oldest and most highly respected in the country. The program has a standing faculty of nine and enrolls approximately 40 candidates in the Ph.D. program, admitting seven to nine new students yearly. The program's reputation was built on excellence in Peninsular literature historically, Latin America was less prominent and particularly on the literature of the Middle Ages and the Golden Age. Today, all areas and time periods are covered in the curriculum. The concept of literature has been broadened, too, to include significant interest in history, film, women's studies, and cultural studies Moreover, the program is one of the few in the nation that offers a specialization in Romance philology. The university has offered introductory instruction in the Portuguese language fairly consistently over time, but instruction and research at higher levels have been intermittent. There is some scholarly interest in other languages and literatures, such as Catalan, Galician, and Valencian, though little formal instruction. Basque is of linguistic interest.
