Introduction Portuguese is the national language of both Portugal and Brazil. With about 10 million speakers in the former and some 160 million in the latter, coupled with speakers in Portuguese colonies in Africa, in the Atlantic, and in Asia, its total number of speakers is over 170 million. in northwesternmost Spain about 3 million people speak a dialect of Portuguese known as Galician. Portuguese is a Romance language, closely related to, and yet distinctly different from, Spanish. It is softer and less emphatic than Spanish, with a greater variety of vowel sounds, and contains a number of nasal sounds that are completely unknown in Spanish. Portuguese is a Romance language spoken by about 191 million people mainly in Brazil ( Brasil ) and Portugal. There are also Portuguese speakers in France ( ), Angola, Mozambique ( ), Cape Verde ( Cabo Verde ), Guinea-Bissau ( Timor-Leste ), Macau ( ) and the Channel Islands, particularly Jersey and Guernsey. The common ancestor of Portuguese and Galician first appeared in writing in legal documents and poetry in the late 12th century. The two languages began to grow apart in the 14th century. By the 16th century, Portuguese probably sounded very much as it does today. Writers and scholars deliberately adopted Latin forms of words and archaic spellings to emphasis the differences between Portuguese and Spanish. A reformed Portuguese orthography ( nova ortografia ), in which words were spelled more in accordance with their pronunciation, was adopted is Portugal in 1916. A slightly modified form was adopted in Brazil in 1943 and revised in 1970. Welcome to the Portuguese School!
Portuguese, the newest addition to the Language Schools, continues in the tradition of excellence established by the other eight schools by offering students the unique summer experience of an integrative program of intensive immersion in a language context. During its 90-year history, the Middlebury College Languages Schools have developed a worldwide reputation for innovative pedagogy anchored on the Language Pledge: a commitment by students to speak only the target language in all situations during every hour of the day and supported by an array of co-curricular activities. The seven-week program will begin on June 10, 2005, and will end on July 29 in a schedule designed to accommodate students who will be studying in Brazil during the fall semester. The Portuguese School, founded in 2003, was the first new Language School at Middlebury in over two decades. One summer in the Language Schools is equivalent to about one year of study in a regular college classroom. Faculty and students live in the same residence halls and take meals together. Accompanying approximately four hours of daily classes is a full program of co-curricular activities: films, lectures, soccer, capoeira, samba, theater, radio broadcasting, cooking and much more. We create an environment that is thoroughly conducive to learning. Cable television from Brazil is fed into the school's social space, so that students may watch programs in Portuguese.
