An intermediate course in Portuguese, "Writing and Speaking Portuguese" is designed to further improve upon students’ writing, speaking, and reading skills. Portuguese 10-20 or Portuguese 11 are prerequisites for the course. Survey respondents seemed to like Professor Sobral and graduate students Marilia Ribeiro and Bill Dilworth overall. Students enjoyed having three instructors, which enabled small sections and thus more practice with speaking. Because each section had roughly six students, the instructors were able to get to know each student and his or her skill level, which allowed for more effective teaching. Reviewers did not distinguish too much between the three instructors and their strengths and weaknesses, but emphasized the ability of all three to involve everyone in discussion and to motivate all to participate. Students agreed that the instructors were available for help and were sensitive to their needs and varying skill levels. Almost all the survey respondents found the short stories the most helpful and enjoyable readings in the course. Several students also cited the screenplay Terra Estrangeira as a useful reading.
