The history of YMAA Portugal goes back to 1991, when the situation of the supposed Chinese martial arts school, where I was practicing, had, in my opinion, reached chaos.

I was 21 years old and 7 years of training. I was the most frustrated black belt of the universe. Truly, I only wanted to learn gong fu (or kung fu) and the more I read and get informed, the more sure I was that what I had learned was everything except the millenarian Chinese art. It was then that I decided to put my hands on work and start to look for a serious master. But in Portugal there was only Choy Lee Fat, taught by professor Rolando Martins. Although, the professor Rolando have been vice European champion in forms, by the Chinese Kuo Shu Federation, my "master", at the time, sowed hatred and was destroying his reputation.
Influenced by the negative wave, I decided, then, to look for a top-level international master and, impressed by the movie "Iron and Silk", I wrote to the famous Pan Master, Qing Fu, that generously, answered me with his impressive curriculum. With the precious help of my dear and already deceased friend, Mário Martins (who I miss a lot), arrived to my hands the name and some copies of one of Dr. Yang, Jwing Ming's works.
I wrote then to Dr. Yang, telling all my frustration. His reply came in November of that year with the reference of his Seminaries in Paris , as well as, of the videos and books for me to start to learn. I took the decision to find Master Yang personally, like he said, "When there is will there is success". Parallel to this, I asked to an uncle of mine in London , to send me all the books of Master Yang and, I received nothing more nothing less than eleven of these spectacular units that even motivated me more.

Throughout the centuries which witnessed the conquest of Lusitania and destruction of Carthaginian power by Rome, the establishment and decline of Latin civilization, the invasion by Alani, Suevi and other barbarian races, the resettlement under Visigothic rule and the overthrow of the Visigoths by Arab and Berber tribes from Africa, today's Portugal remained an undifferentiated part of Hispania, without sign of national consciousness. The Iberian Peninsula was one and its common history is related under Spain. Its divisions didn't match the modern ones. It is true that some Portuguese writers have sought to identify their race with the ancient Lusitani, and have claimed for it a separate and continuous existence dating from the 2nd century B.C. The revolt of Lusitania against the Romans has been regarded as an early manifestation of Portuguese love of liberty, Viriathus as a national hero. But this theory, which originated in the 15th century and was perpetuated in the title of the Lusiadas epic, has no historical foundation, and Viriathus has also been considered a national hero in Spain. In 1095 Portugal was an obscure border fief of the kingdom of Leon. Its territories, far from the centers of European civilization and consisting largely of mountain, moorland and forest, were bounded on the north by the Minho, on the south by the Mondego.

When it handed over its last overseas territory, Macau, to Chinese administration in 1999, it brought to an end a long and sometimes turbulent era as a colonial power. OVERVIEW
    FACTS
LEADERS MEDIA The roots of that era stretch back to the 15th century when Portuguese explorers such as Vasco da Gama put to sea in search of a passage to India. By the 16th century these sailors had helped build a huge empire embracing Brazil as well as swathes of Africa and Asia. There are still some 200 million Portuguese speakers around the world today. Portugal's history has had a lasting impact on the culture of the country with Moorish and Oriental influences in architecture and the arts. Traditional folk dance and music, particularly the melancholy fado, remain vibrant. For almost half of the 20th century Portugal was a dictatorship in which for decades Antonio de Oliveira Salazar was the key figure. The dictatorship's stubborn refusal to relinquish its grip on the former colonies as demands for independence gained momentum there resulted in expensive wars in Africa.

MARCH OF THE TITANS - A HISTORY OF THE WHITE RACE Chapter 22: Lessons in Decline: Spain and Portugal PART TWO: PORTUGAL Because of the close proximity to Spain , the development of Portugal mirrors its larger Iberian neighbor in virtually all respects except one - it absorbed a far larger number of Black slaves during its slave trading era, and is therefore as a nation substantially more miscegenated than the vast majority of Spaniards, even those who themselves are of obvious mixed heritage. THE FIRST INHABITANTS - OLD EUROPEANS The first inhabitants of Portugal were the Old Europeans, who in turn were overrun by successive waves of the same peoples who occupied Spain - the mixed Old European/Indo-European Carthaginians - the original Romans - then the Indo-European Alans, Vandals and Visigoths, all of whom left their genetic imprint on the population. LUSITANIA - PROVINCE OF ROME Portugal was occupied along with Spain by the Romans during the 2nd Century BC and incorporated into the province of Lusitania. Roman rule was uninterrupted for over 500 years, during which time the country advanced thanks to the importation of Roman technological and organizational skills, like all of the Roman Empire at that stage. The collapse of the Western Roman Empire saw the Visigoths establish their kingdom in Iberia, with the region known as Portugal forming a part of the Visigothic state. THE MOORISH INVASION The non-White Muslim invasion of 711 AD, saw a large part of southern Portugal falling under Moorish rule for several centuries. The liberation of Portugal during the mid 15th Century by the rejuvenated Gothic king and queen, Ferdinand and Isabella, saw the region re-organized into a feudal country composed of Spanish fiefs. Portugal derived its name from one of these fiefs, the Comitatus Portaculenis, which was based around the Roman established port of Portus Cale (known today as Oporto).

Title: Freedom Fighters: Anarchist Intellectuals, Workers, and Soldiers in Portugal's History The history of anarchism in Portugal. Anarchism emerged and developed amidst the social unrest in industrial societies. It was, in many countries, a genuinely popular movement shaped by a political philosophy drawn from the writings of both intellectuals and self-taught individuals.
Some eighty years ago, Portugese libertarians were organized under the banner of syndicalism. This movement deeply marked the history of Portugal. Freedom Fighters examines anarchist ideas and how these arrived in Portugal, and how the anarchist program gained popularity with both the working class and intellectuals, people who believed in the slogan 'with neither God nor master.'
This fascinating history is traced from the beginning of the 20th century through the Spanish Civil War and the Second World War. The role of the anarchists during Salazer's dictatorship is examined with much previously unknown documentation. Of particular interest is the history of the anarchists during the 1974 'Carnation Revolution' and during Portugal's emergence as a contemporary liberal democracy. Freedom Fighters fills a large gap in the history and sociology of Portugal. Much of the analysis and documentation presented in this important work will help the contemporary reader to understand Portugal today. "Freedom Fighters is now, and will remain for a long time, a necessary book to any who look to do new research on the subject."

Back to Portugal Society These restrictions were lifted after the Revolution of 1974. The constitution of 1976 guarantees all religions the right to practice their faith. Protestant groups came to be recognized as legal entities with the right to assemble. Portuguese who were both Protestant and conscientious objectors had the right to apply for alternative military service. The Roman Catholic Church, however, still sought to place barriers in the way of Protestant missionary activities. The Jewish community in Portugal numbered between 500 and 1,000 as of the early 1990s. The community was concentrated in Lisbon, and many of its members were foreigners. The persecution of Portuguese Jewry had been so intense that until recent decades Portugal had no synagogue or even regular Jewish religious services. The few Jewish Portuguese were hence isolated from the main currents of Judaism. Their community began to revive when larger numbers of foreign Jews (embassy personnel, business people, and technicians) began coming to Portugal in the 1960s and 1970s. In northern Portugal, there were a few villages of Marranos, descendants of Jews who converted to Christianity to avoid persecution and whose religion was a mixture of Judaism and Christianity. Portugal's Muslim community consisted of a small number of immigrants from Portugal's former colonies in Southern Africa, and larger numbers of recent immigrant workers from Northern Africa, mainly Morocco.
