http://www.portugal-live.net/UK/essential/general-physical.html
Essential Info General Information
Portugal is an extension of the mountainous formations of the Iberian Peninsula. In its terrain two types of relief are distinguished: the South and North of the river Tagus.
In the north the relief is more rugged, slopes are steep and cut by deep valleys. The weather sculptured higher grounds, giving them a distinct look of the Spanish landscape.
In the South of the river Tagus, the land is more uniform, marshy and of scarce relief. The predominant vegetation, in this region, is limited to plants and shrubs (charnecas) or mediterranean trees (cork-trees, scarlet-oaks, fig-trees and olive-trees).
The hydrographic network is rich, gaining discharge and importance in rivers that begin in Spain, as the rivers Minho, douro, Tagus and Guadiana that flow into the Atlantic Ocean. The estuaries of the Douro and the Tagus constitute important anchorages, having bestowed on the Portuguese nation an important natural platform for discovery and overseas commerce. Geography
XXI century's Portugal is formed by three territorial areas: Açores (Azores), Continente and Madeira. The Açores islands are to be found out in the Atlantic Ocean between the European and American continents. The archipelago covers 2,355 km2 and is made up of 9 islands - São Miguel and Santa Maria in the eastern group, Terceira, Graciosa, São Jorge, Pico and Faial in the central group, with Flores and Corvo in the western group. The Continente is a rectangle located in the Iberian Peninsula, in the far Southwest of Europe and stretches for 88,889 km2: 218 km in breadth, 561 km in length with 832 km of Atlantic coastline and a 1,215 km long border with Spain. The Madeira archipelago is 741 km2 in size and located in the mid-Atlantic around 500 kilometres from the African coast and 1,000 kilometres from Europe. It is made up of the islands of Madeira and Porto Santo and the uninhabited islands groups of Desertas and Selvagens (that are now Nature Reserves).

Introduction Portugal Background: Following its heyday as a world power during the 15th and 16th centuries, Portugal lost much of its wealth and status with the destruction of Lisbon in a 1755 earthquake, occupation during the Napoleonic Wars, and the independence in 1822 of Brazil as a colony. A 1910 revolution deposed the monarchy; for most of the next six decades, repressive governments ran the country. In 1974, a left-wing military coup installed broad democratic reforms. The following year, Portugal granted independence to all of its African colonies. Portugal entered the EC (now the EU) in 1986. < BACK TO HISTORY CONTENTS The Iberian Peninsula is a geographic unit that contains a number of distinct regions based on climate and geomorphology, such as Andalusia, Castile, Galicia, and Lusitania. Lusitania, which now encompasses the modern nation-state of Portugal, is generally set off from the other regions of the peninsula by areas of higher elevation that run parallel to the Atlantic coast, greater rainfall, and a more moderate climate. It was this regional distinctiveness, as well as the internal geography of Lusitanialargely open to the south but hemmed in by mountains on the east and the Atlantic Ocean on the westthat gave rise to a culturally and socially distinct people, the Portuguese, and later to an independent nation-state, Portugal. Data as of January 1993
